Status Completed Mission
Description

Stardate: 67837.5
Location: Celes System

USS Galileo is currently finishing the last of her repair and resupply operations at Jupiter Station when she and her crew are summoned to assist in the settling and development of a new Federation colony at Celes III. A unique planet within a trinary star system, Celes III's elliptical orbit drags the world outside of the solar system's habitable zone for several months of the year making colonization efforts extremely difficult due to the variable ecosystem.

Dr. Sable Iroh, a prominent robotics and computer expert within Starfleet's Applied Sciences Division, has recently developed a new humanoid artificial intelligence prototype which shows much promise. SFASD and Starfleet Operations have both authorized Dr. Iroh to begin practical test trials, and the colony at Celes III provides an optimal test bed for the new android. Galileo's mission is to escort the colony ship, the doctor, and her prototype to Celes III, then assist with colonial establishment and observation before reporting their findings back to Starfleet.

Mission Focus: Science, Exploration

Mission Summary

Starfleet's Applied Sciences Division, a subdivision of Starfleet Sciences, concerns itself with the application of Federation research to solve practical problems within the UFP. Its main goal is the sponsoring, funding and development of new technologies, and it is currently spearheaded by Dr. Sable Iroh. A prominent computer scientist and robotics expert by trade, Dr. Iroh has recently made several breakthroughs in the field of advanced artificial intelligence. Her prior studies of artificial life forms -- including exocomps and the Soong prototypes -- have allowed her to program and create the newest generation of autonomous sentient androids. Her recent work has created much buzz within various scientific communities and also within Starfleet Operations, and the prospect of having a potential new race of intelligent mechanoids within the Federation has prompted calls for advanced trials, testing, and observation.

Dr. Iroh believes her creations would be best observed in a practical environment. Specifically, she has been granted authority to integrate her primary prototype into the population of a new Federation colony being established in the Celes system. SFASD hopes to use this new colony to demonstrate the effectiveness of the AI as it performs a variety of duties, including construction, agricultural labor, computer system proficiency, recreation, and socialization. The designated test colony, Celes III, is unique in that its elliptical orbit -- a result of the trinary star system -- pulls the planet slightly out of the star's habitable zone for several months of the year. During these months the planet is far enough from its sun to allow temperatures to drop to -100 C, and this variable ecosystem will pose unique challenges to the settlers which Dr. Iroh hopes to solve with her prototype.

Having recently completed a lengthy repair and resupply period at Jupiter Station, USS Galileo is tasked with escorting the colony ship and its personnel from the Sol system to Celes III. They will then assist Dr. Iroh with colonial deployment and perform scientific observation upon its inhabitants for a period of thirty days. The single advanced prototype is expected to perform the work of ten colonists, and its success or failure will be closely monitored by many members of Starfleet.
