ON:

"Carus?"

Amynta frowned as she watched the screen, his breath catching. She smiled weakly when she saw him answer, looking at her with surprise. "Mum?"

She nodded before sitting back, reaching for her drink. She had managed to get away from the Cardassian situation...and latched onto the only thing she could. Her son. The one thing that had always made her feel grateful that her planet got evacuated, forcibly so. Because he was alive. He had never known anyone to mistreat him or those around him. "Did I wake you? What time is it over there?"

"Don't matter..." Carus said and ran his hand over his hair and face before meeting her eyes. "What's going on? You never call me unless there's something."

She looked down into her drink, considering what to say. He knew her by now. Her real relationship with her son had started when he was a man. She could speak to him like an adult and not feel bad. He was a good man, he had a career. Her family had raised him well without her. "Cardassians. We're entertaining them."

The grimace on her son's face said it all. He knew how she felt about Cardassians. And anyone involved in the war. "They still alive?"

"I was on my best behaviour," she said, as if it explained it all. "And will continue to be so." She sat back, just watching him for a long moment as she considered what she wanted to say. "Carus...next shoreleave, do you want to come and see the Galileo?"

There was a pause as Carus watched her, with a small smile. "I...you want me there? I mean, one thing is meeting up somewhere. It's another to see where you work."

Amynta chuckled at that, studying him closely. "Carus, there's people here who are insane and should never be allowed to serve. I think I am oddly enough the least of Galileo's problem. I want you to see where I work and live. I want you to see and meet the people."

"Is that a good thing?" he laughed loudly, shaking his head before rubbing his eyes tiredly. "Sure, Amynta. Sounds good. Next shoreleave I'll dress up and come and meet you on the Galileo."

"Good..." she nodded in return, her eyes softening. He looked tired. "Go to bed, Carus. We'll speak soon."

"You going to be okay?" he asked softly, reaching out to touch the screen. "I can stay up and talk if you want."

"I'll be fine," she said softly, touched by his offer. But she knew better. He needed to relax. Sleep. He too had a tough career. "Sweet dreams."

"Night, Amynta...stay safe," Carus said and turned the screen off.

Amynta frowned as she watched the blank screen before draining her glass, standing slowly. "As safe as I can in a nest of vipers," she whispered softly.
