Aren looked over the assembled students, studying them for a moment to see if any had questions before continuing with his lecture. "Virtually every control panel and terminal within a ship is usually linked to a subprocessor or directly into the optical data network. Each active panel is continually polled by the LCARS at intervals that range 30-40 millisecond which is dependent upon local subprocessor and/or the main computer core. Each polling inquiry is followed by a 42 nanosecond compressed data stream, which provides panel update information. This data stream includes any requested visual or audio information for panel output. Short-range RF data links are available throughout the ship to provide information transmission to portable and handheld devices such as tricorders and PADDs." Aren said as he pressed a button on his terminal which change the slide to a basic wire diagram of a computer system. He looked at the time and they only had a few more moments before there scheduled break. "We are almost out of time, but I can't express this enough, know this diagram it forms the basis of Starfleet network architecture. And with that, you are dismissed." He said before moving to his desk to gather some things.

The class, all first year cadets filed out, until there was only one left. The young woman had the pronounced bumps and distinctive forked crevice over her brows announced her as a Haliian. She hovered at the door until she was sure her classmates were out of earshot, beofre saying, "Lieutenant Ban? Could I trouble you for a moment of your time?"

Aren checked the time before giving his full attention to the cadet that was standing before him. "Of course, Cadet. What can I do for you?" He asked, wondering what it could be that she wanted,

"Its Commander Ch'sarat's comms class. We're looking at how to interface with the various sensor systems, and I'm just not getting it. I was hoping you could talk me through it. the Commanders lectures just aren't making sense. I know I'm missing something but I just can't see what." There was a sense of frustration and an edge of despair in her voice, and her dark eyes looked at him like he was her Last Great Hope.

Aren knew her frustration. It hadn't been so long ago that he had been at the academy, and he too had had difficulty in a few classes. He had been fortunate enough that he had had friends whom had a good grasp of the material and helped him. But he understood that sometimes friends can't quite explain it like an instructor, which he too had found out the hard way. "I see," he said as he checked the time, "I am not free right at this moment, I have a briefing that I need to attend, but I can set aside some time later this afternoon, or this evening if that works for you?" He asked, wanting to make sure that he gave his undivided attention, and not be distracted because of time.

"I have EPS system planning this afternoon," she said with some frustration. "But I'm free after that, any time after 1800 that is good for you."

Aren nodded to the young women. "1800 works great. Do you need a holodeck or will my office be suffice?" Aren asked, wanting to put in the request now if they really needed it.

She bit her lip, not sure. "Maybe just the study for now. I don't think I understand enough to make a simulation worth while yet."

Aren nodded. "Very well. I will see you at my office this evening at
1800." He said.

"Thank you, sir"

I really want to thank Notty for helping me with this PL. She is a wonderful writer, and I would have been hard pressed to make this work without her.
