[ON]

Three hours into his shift and he had cleared seven of the endless list of tasks on Peers' board. Hopefully she would be happy in the morning, he felt a distinct need to earn some respect, trust, and approval from the woman, despite their almost equal standing.

Next on his to-do list was a serious of door chimes which were malfunction, first was that of a junior officer on deck 3. Room 3-B-32. As he walked along the corridor he checked out the door numbers, 3-B-30, MCPO Quinn.

He stopped at the next door and knocked on it, there was no response. He didn't need the person in to fix the chime, unless it was the sounder inside, but that would have produced a different report of a lack of announcements as the chime was usually piped through the ship's comm system circuitry and components.

Tav crouched down beside the touch panel beside the door and put his toolkit on the floor, as he did so he heard the next door down slide open with a hiss.

Quinn exited his quarters and then noticed the ensign crouched down in front of the door next to his. "Ensign, there is no need to bow before me, though the thought is proper." Quinn tried to keep a straight face, but was failing.

"I...wha..." Tav muttered, looking up, but still crouching.

An older man in uniform stood over him, a smile slowing cracking his poker face.

"Master Chief Quinn, nice to meet you sir. I see Williams door is stuck again. Typical. That door is broke more than it isn't. Been that way since before we ever got her out of dry dock for the maiden voyage."

"Tav Hunter," he replied, extending his hand as he stood, his Scottish accent more noticeable than usual. "Yes, the door chime is on the blink, it's on our to-do list."

"Master Chief, you must be the boss of the ship then?" he added rhetorically, with a smile.

"Well," replied Quinn with a smirk. "I guess that depends on whom you ask, Ensign. How is Engineering treating you, sir? Any troubles?" even though it wasn't his department any more, it would always be his baby.

"Ensign Peers has a long to-do list and no staff," Tav replied, smiling. "That is the biggest trouble. Other than that, I've only been aboard a day, so I'm just figuring out the ropes."

"She's a damn good engineer, Ensign. She learned from the best after all, that's why she runs the department now." Quinn said with a grin. "I'm by no means someone you need to report to, but if you ever want some advice, or just somebody to shut up and listen...look me up. I'm always available, sir."

Tav, despite being in Starfleet a few years now, could still not get used to the idea of someone with the Master Chief's experience and knowledge calling him sir, but he also knew that regulations demanded it.

"Thank you," he replied. "I may need to given some of the changes that the ship seems to have undergone. They still need to update the manual."

Quinn smiled and placed a reassuring hand on the young man's shoulder. "Son, the day the manual gets updated, is the day that Engineers are no longer needed...if you get my point, sir."

"Never did get a copy, to be honest," Tav replied with a smile.

It was always good to find a Master Chief with a sense of humour. The Excalibur's MCPO was much the same, light-hearted, willing to offer advice and friendly.

"Well I know where you are if I want to know why the door chime still doesn't ring."

"Or if you ever need a home brewed beer too, sir." Quinn answered with a chuckle. "If you see Senior Chief Willis...give him a hard time for me, please."

"Home brew?" Tav enquired, smiling. "You know I might just have to take you up on that when I'm not working."

"And Willis, I'll make sure I do, just for you."

"Thank-you, sir. That will make my day." Quinn gave a nod. "I have to get going, sir. Have a great day, and you may want to check the sensory matrix in the control panel." he added pointing towards the troublesome door.
