Mission: Episode 17 - Crystal of Life
Location: USS Galileo-A - Deck 1, Conference Room
Timeline: MD -182, 1939 hrs

[ON]

USS Galileo had been traveling at warp for almost ten minutes and so far the captain was satisfied with the vessel's performance. Initial reports from the bridge indicated the warp reactor was stable, and no system malfunctions had manifested as of yet. Saalm knew there'd be a break-in period as with all new starships, but all early indications suggested the test crew had done an admirable job in their duties.

Sitting on the bridge in the starboard command chair, the captain stood from her seat and tapped her commbadge. "All senior personnel, report to the conference room for mission briefing." The Orion glanced around the bridge to identify the senior-most officer who would remain during her temporary absence, and located one of her new science officers.

"Ensign Ullswater, you have the bridge," Saalm instructed while leaving her station and heading towards the port-side exit along with several other of the bridge's senior personnel.

As Lirha crossed the bridge Jeysa, who had just came from the conference lounge where she had been preparing things for the briefing quickly turned around and headed back.

It had been less than 30 seconds for a replacement helmsman to arrive next to his station after pressing the button calling for a replacement. This allowed Shizn to get up and walk over and into the Briefing Room. Before more officers arrived, Tris quickly said, “Captain, I want to thank you for giving me this opportunity.”

"Of course, lieutenant," the Orion replied. "I will be reviewing our planned course with the rest of the officers and your input will be welcome."

The Andorian gave the Captain a confirming nod and took a seat at the conference table.

Marisa transferred her bridge station to another science officer and headed for the conference room. She found a seat and pulled out her PADD to take notes. She knew some of the senior staff and was eager to work with them, and to meet the rest.

The door hadn't even closed as Scarlet Blake followed her in. She had a PADD in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other...the start of a long and beautiful relationship, she was sure. She nodded to the others as she took her seat, taking a moment to admire the new, comfortable meeting room. It even had a great view to match. She was being constantly reminded of just how lucky they were.

Azra entered the conference room, located to port of the bridge. It was a relatively large room for a small ship like the Nova class. She brushed a strand of hair off her cheek and back into place. She recognized many of the people in the room by now, though she'd not really had a chance to get to know them well.

She sat next to a dark-haired woman with a cup of coffee and a commander's pips. "Good evening," she said quietly as she settled in.

"Ghoc," Scarlet gave a nod of greeting back to her, recognising the woman easily enough. She was able to put faces to names to records...she hoped to be able to learn and see more for herself before too much time went by.

Though he wasn't next to the briefing room Luke had been anticipating a call for the senior staff and had been loitering with intent. He was glad his suspicions were correct and the call came early on. Walking into the briefing room it was easily to recognize the faces of each department head. Having previously spoken to Marisa he sat himself down in the first seat, smiled and politely nodded in the directions of the other senior staff.

Allyndra made her way to the briefing room. It had been nice to have new everything in quarters and more and this was the same. She had hardly gotten time to even see the rest of the ship, so she somewhat lingered looking at the various changes that the new ship had. There was one thing though that she had been brought up with and that was not to be late and so reluctantly she turned toward the room before the designated meeting time.

She nodded to the rest and then took the traditional seat for the chief medical officer opposite that of the captains. While the executive officer would traditionally sit to the right and the counselor to the left of the captain, it was considered that medical was the anchor on the other side along with the second officer. Taking the seat reminded her of the responsibility that was bestowed upon her. The medical officer had the power to relieve command and she had only ever done it once before and did not care to have to ever consider it again.

Tris had watched the other officers enter the room. He had nodded or responded quietly to them if they had made a gesture his direction. But when Cmdr. Warraquim entered the room, well, she just seemed to light up the room with her presence. He wanted to be friendly to her, but at the same time didn’t want to draw attention to himself.

"Good evening all," she said in her light musical voice.

Kai slipped into the conference room. He'd hadn't been included in command briefings as his own entity since, well, ever. As the senior NCO in the medical departments he'd served in, Kai had been included in high level departmental briefings, and occasionally a ship or base wide briefing in the face of an emergency or a large scale training, or to otherwise support his CMO. Thinking about it, Kai decided that this situation wasn't all that much different. He was here to support the Captain, the XO, and all of the other officers in accomplishing their goals. The scope of his supporting role was larger on the one hand, but on the other, this was a much smaller unit than his last two assignments, which were starbases. All-in-all, Kai figured it would balance out.

"Evening, Doc," Kai replied to Allyndra. "The shoulder feels great. Thank Doctor Voutilainen for me when you see her. I mean, I will, next time I see her, but if you could thank her for me anyway, I'd appreciate it."

Allyndra turned and nodded at the greeting. "Hello chief. I certainly will. Glad the shoulder is feeling much better. Here this seat is for you." She patted the one to her left. "Traditional spot. Captain, first officer, and counselor at one end, medical, second officer and chief of the boat at the other. We provide the counter as it where."

"Works for me," Kai said, sitting in the indicated seat.

Perhaps it was only in his head, but the sterile aroma of the conference room struck Lake ir-Llantrisant as soon as he crossed the threshold. Coming from within belly of the ship, Lake was one of the last to arrive, and yet he stood impassive at the aperture. It was that new starship smell. As much as Sickbay was maintained in pristine condition, Sickbay was alive. There were always people --medics, patients, engineers-- coming and going. If the bulkheads of this conference room could talk, Lake assumed they wouldn't have much to say. Not yet. Their life experience consisted of paint drying and not a lot else. Certainly, this conference room smelled nothing like the musk aboard his previous postings, Hathaway and Schofield. Those had been ships with generations of service and duty radiated into their bones. Rounding the meeting table, Chief Counselor Lake ir-Llantrisant lowered himself into his designated chair, and he wondered what experiences would leave a mark on Galileo's bones.

Being the highest ranked Ops officer Mimi figured she had to go to the briefing so she secured the Ops console and handed over to her cover before following the rest of the officers towards the conference room. She was excited but nervous that she'd make a fool of herself in front of the senior officers, she greeted the officers that she were not already on the bridge along side her then took a seat towards the middle of the table.

The Orion captain looked at her unique and diversified team of senior personnel with pride, knowing many of them intimately well while acknowledging others were still semi-green Galileans. They would all become a singular and efficient unit soon. And all were very talented. There was a lot to cover over the next hour which had prompted her to create a task list on her PADD to organize her thoughts.

Unclipping the slim silver device from her belt, she walked around the side of the table and stopped next to the large wall-integrated LCARS monitor. "Thank you all for coming. It's good to see everyone like this, again. There is much to discuss so I will be concise. Let's begin," Saalm started. Her green index finger tapped a few sequences into her PADD to link it with the larger display, then it blinked to now show a rotating orthographic technical schematic of a Nova II-class starship.

"This is Galileo-A. As you know, she is our new vessel and home for the next three years. All of you have access to the classified engineering manuals and design documents, and I expect you to become experts of this starship by the time we arrive on station at Regula One." Lirha turned to view the screen and highlighted the most critical systems upgrades. "The official designation is a Nova-class Mark-two frigate, but externally it's indistinguishable from the legacy Nova-class. Galileo-A is the first of the production line so there will of course be some...complications along the way. 'Teething issues', as you Humans say.

"We have a new warp-nine reactor and improved fusion drive, each with increased power output and distribution. The addition of bio-neural gel pack integration throughout all ship systems greatly enhances the efficiency of our two computer cores. Our sensor packages remain similar but include the most recent software enhancements. And our torpedo compliment has been reduced to accommodate a larger probe inventory." Lirha looked back to those assembled at the table.

"Starfleet Operations has been placing a priority on technical efficiency over the last ten years and that mindset is now present in the Design Bureau's latest creations. As such, our operational crew compliment is reduced and the internal deck configuration was altered. To 'enhance productivity,' if I remember correctly from the memo.”

"Weapons and defensive systems follow the same configuration as the legacy Nova except the aft torpedo launching system was removed to accommodate the new auxiliary shuttlebay. The ship has been fitted with powerful electronic warfare suites to facilitate our fleet support role in times of emergency -- and our new self-protection jammer was installed to increase the vessel's survivability during hostile engagements." The captain paused for a couple seconds to allow everyone to digest the information if necessary before continuing.

"Our shuttlecraft compliment is robust for a starship our size; between our Waverider and the two Type-sixes, we can fully scout and terrain-map a medium-sized star system within a week. The maintenance workbee in our auxiliary bay lets us conduct ship repairs and change sensor suites while on patrol without having to return to starbase. And the Type-fifteen-A shuttlepod services all short-range personnel transport.

"Galileo is, in the purest sense, a mobile sensor platform complimented with laboratories and expedition craft. She is the most advanced Starfleet science vessel ever launched to date." Saalm let her hand holding the PADD fall to her side to indicate a pause in the briefing to allow any questions or comments from the assembled department heads.

Kai looked over the summary of the information he was given. He'd have to wait until later to take a more in-depth look at it all. The ship wasn't going to be much for heavy combat, but it could defend itself. The lack of an aft torpedo launcher could be an issue, but there was an aft phaser array, and the dorsal and ventral arrays could fire aft. Not directly aft, but aft. That should be enough to protect a small survey ship like the Galileo. Anything too big or powerful to fight they could just run away from.

"All well and good captain, so we can survey and also work in a squadron as a early warning and electronic warfare platform, but besides all the 'goodies' what is are real purpose going to be? An escort to Regula I and an operational in the Pleiades, but there has to be more to it than that. Fleet must have something that they are interested in,” Allyndra asked.

Saalm listened to the question presented by the CMO and second officer, realizing it was more related to operational aspects than the technical overview she'd just given. "We will discuss our mission shortly. I know there is much on everyone's minds. Are there any further questions about our starship?"

Shizn was eager to ask many questions, but really didn’t know where to start. He had already read through much of the information, but still needed to digest more before making a knowledgeable specific question.

Mimi listened as Lirha explained some of the specs of the ship, she already knew a lot of information about the having had access to the specs for quite a while, so her and the rest of the ops and engineering staff wouldn't be going in blind.

Having already looked over the ship’s tactical systems both offensive and defensive Luke had started to piece together a report, one he wanted to bring up with the Captain at length in a one to one discussion so he opted to staying silent, shaking his head so everyone knew he had no current comments.

Scarlet also kept her silence, shaking her head gently with a small, calm smile. She'd gone over the blueprints as thoroughly as she could in the time she'd had. She could foresee the day that she'd be able to navigate the ship blindfolded if needed, although there was more studying to do yet. She was confident that Holliday and Ban would have been up to the challenge.

Azra had reviewed everything she'd had access to up to this point. Of course, there were some things that Starfleet played close to the vest until the last possible moment. There were a few details that she could catch that had clearly been excluded from the files she'd gotten previously. She made a quick note to review the documents again in more detail.

Marisa studied the specs of their new ship, or as far as they applied to science. The rest she'd scanned out of curiosity. At the moment, she had no questions.

Similar to most of the senior staff, Lake swiped through the technical specifications on his PADD. His ridged brow was furrowed all the more as he struggled to make sense of the overwhelming wealth of information. Scrolling through the headings, he searched for anything new that hadn't been accessible to him before, but it all melded together in his mind's eye. He shook his head in the negative at the Captain's request for questions.

There didn't seem to be anymore queries at the moment so Saalm moved to the next and most obvious elephant in the room -- their new personnel and chain of command. "I now want to discuss our new crew." Her light green eyes moved from face to face across those seated and standing in the conference room. "As some of you may have heard, Commander Ban was recalled to Earth just prior to departure. It's unfortunate to lose a veteran first officer only days before a new assignment, but Commander Blake has been promoted to the position and will serve as our new XO." Lirha looked towards the brown-haired Human woman and gave her a tiny nod of approval. "Many of you have served under her before and I am very confident in her abilities. We're lucky to have her with us.

"In addition, both Lieutenant Lucero and Ensign Derani were relieved and transferred off-board. Lieutenant Shizn is our new senior conn officer," she explained, pausing to look to the Andorian. "Please coordinate with Tris during all support craft operations." The captain then looked to Sandoval. "Marisa, I believe you're scheduled to take on a new deputy science officer once we arrive at Regula I. In the meantime, Lieutenant Plumeri and Ensign Ullswater can assist you in all science operations.

"Mimi," Lirha then looked to the young Nekomi ensign, "Until our new operations manager arrives, you'll serve as our acting department head. And until our chief engineer also arrives, Chief Petty Officer Gorvel will oversee our Engineering department. Chief Ghoc," she addressed the Cardassian bosun, "I will rely on your expertise to oversee our young engineers and keep our propulsion systems fully operational."

Marisa nodded. She knew about Commander Ban, and she suspected that Miraj had also been removed. But Lucero was a surprise. Still, she had no doubt her department would be fine until they got a new deputy.

Allyndra nodded toward Mimi and then Gorvel. She did not know the later as well as the former, but she had no doubts both would step up without any problems. She would miss Miraj and Ban, but such was life in the Fleet.

"Ka mana o Ke Mahoe'Akuae e ho’opakele mai ia ‘oukou," she recited to herself. "May the power of the Twins protect you." She turned her attention back to the meeting.

The pensive expression on Lake's face twisted into a broad grin at Allyndra's recitation. The beauty of her words and how she spoke them clearly touched him at his core, and changed the way he carried himself in his seat. Turning his gaze upon Mimi then, Lake said softly, "You'll do amazing, Ensign Wind Dancer."

Azra had noted the changes with some surprise. While personnel changes were common in Starfleet, it was rarely just days before or after a brand new ship was launched. Regardless. she'd need to get to know the people who were taking over those roles.

Even though she was already doing a lot of the jobs of the department chief Mimi smiled at being officially recognised as a deputy chief though she wasn't sure she was truly ready for leading the biggest department on the ship. Learning she had been right about Miraj leaving the ship took just a little edge off the smile though.

"Let's continue," the captain said, now looking back down to her PADD and inputting several more commands into the device. The large screen blinked again and the orthographic display of Galileo's external hull was suddenly replaced by a top-down strategic map of the current and surrounding sectors. A Starfleet icon appeared at their current position near the Rigel system then a purple-dotted course line slowly drew itself from their location down south away from the galactic center until it reached the very bottom of charted Federation space in between the Pleiades Cluster and the Mutara Nebula.

"This is our current course to our new area of operations. At our present cruise speed of warp 6, our ferry will last six months and take us from the core Federation worlds to the southern border. The convoy we're traveling with is also en route to the station, and our transport vessel, Lagrange, will conduct underway replenishment procedures with us at regular monthly intervals so we don't run out of stores or deuterium reserves." Lirha paused to look at her officers and NCOs then back to the screen.

"Regula One's exact position is classified due to the sensitive nature of its research. Starfleet will send us further details once we are closer to our destination, but make no mistake -- whatever our civilian scientists are researching out there must be important. Nova-class starships aren't routinely deployed to frontier positions... Nor is extended deep space exploration one of our mission profiles." The Orion captain paused momentarily once again to allow her own personal opinions on the matter to evaporate.

"Six months is a long time to be idle," she continued, once again lowering the PADD to her thigh but this time looking to the Romulan in the room. "As our chief counselor knows, continuous and repetitive personnel routines are a recipe for psychological stress. Repeating the same tasks at the same duty stations month after month will challenge even the most experienced crews. But it's our duty to use this down time to train and memorize every computer system, deck layout, tactical contingency, and emergency procedure before we arrive on-station and are called to fulfill our mission. And for that, each of you will be instrumental."

In concert with Lirha's assertion, Lake ir-Llantrisant said, "The crew will look to all of you to set the tone for how they manage the stresses of a deep-space crossing. Even the ones who don't appear to be looking that closely will respond to the example you each lead."

Tris sat there with a blank look on his face as his antennae sagged forward onto his forehead as he thought, 6 months of looking at stars streaking by and not touching the controls. Well, not much at least. Oh, this is going to become boring oh so very fast.

Mimi exhaled fairly heavily. 6 months of balancing resources so they didn't run out of anything important before each resupply from the Lagrange was not going to be fun.

Azra decided to speak up, "Captain, during times like this, I've also found it useful to cross-train in other areas of responsibility. Not only does it prevent cabin fever, if you will, it makes everyone more proficient at their own tasks as well as understanding the needs of neighboring departments."

Allyndra nodded to that. "Indeed, something to get away from the routine. Might suggest as well that perhaps some sort of interests clubs for social interaction as well."

Lirha thought both ideas presented were valid and would go a long way towards everyone's personal enrichment. Just like targs, Pyrithian bats and Earth felines, humanoids also needed to be stimulated both physically and intellectually to avoid stress and signs of depression. "That is an excellent idea," she replied to the bosun before looking to her first officer for her thoughts.

Tris liked what he heard from that Chief Groc. He knew cross training was always a good thing. He also agreed with Allyndra. Shizn finally spoke up, “I think a survey of interests could be taken, then matching knowledgeable members to talk about and/or teach those interested.”

Dragging his fingers over the interface of his PADD, Lake took note of the discussion as it unfolded, and his own private notes about who was offering what sorts of suggestions. "My team can facilitate the survey," Lake said, looking up to meet eyes with Tris and then to glance over at Mimi, "In partnership with Operations."

Blake leant back in her chair, crossing her legs as she looked to Lirha with a nod. "Chaplain Thorne is returning to the crew. He asked if he could restart some of the activity groups he used to run. It would be a mix of things, from music to history, something for everyone. Perhaps we should all encourage our staff to get involved. It would certainly help people recharge their batteries, give them another focus...." she then looked to Ghoc, considering what she had proposed. "I also agree this is an excellent chance to sharpen up our skills, both with specialist and cross department training..." the comment reminded her of the meeting she'd had with Luke, motioning to him with a point of her finger. "Mr Wyatt actually had some ideas along those lines."

"Thank you Commander," Said the Security chief nodding appreciatively in her direction before turning his attention to the rest of the command staff. "As Commander Blake has mentioned I have proposed and drafted with the help off Chief Ghoc and Master Chief Mazen. Between us we have come up with two separate training programs specializing in the crew's reaction to an unusual emergency procedure designed to both put the participants in a stressful environment and make difficult choices. They are open to all and I hope that if not your then some of your personnel will be able to attend them. Depending on the degree of success I will run several during our transition phase through space."

"Perhaps we could add a list to see where people would like to cross-train," Marisa added. "And people willing to teach them."

Luke watched the Chief Science Officer speak and nodded liking the idea, perhaps slightly biased too. "I agree, this ship and its crew need to be ready in all aspects and I think it will serve well to have my Security Officer trained in different areas."

"I'll coordinate details with each of you outside this meeting," Azra said, looking to the people who had volunteered to assist. Talking specifics like that during a briefing like this only served to lengthen the meeting and rarely resulted in solid, actionable plans.

Blake nodded slowly with approval as they spoke, clearly liking what she was hearing. She had a passion for training, and helping others develop their skills and careers. She didn't believe any person should be limited by circumstance or confidence. She'd definitely be happy to help them with organising training.

"This doesn't really apply to all departments, but I encourage everyone in science to have a personal research project to work on when things gets slow or monotonous. And to publish academic papers. I'd be happy to work with others who have similar interests, providing we have the space and time available."

"Thank you, Marisa," replied the captain to her half-Vulcan chief science officer. "I am in agreement. Our lab facilities are at your full disposal for any projects you desire. If you have additional requirements or need further accommodation, Mimi can assist you." As the acting operations manager for the time being, the young felinoid Ops officer was the primary point of contact for all ship-wide needs. Lirha then thought of another, more pressing matter to address.

"I also want to bring us together, tonight. To relax and...socialize. Get to know and understand each other as peers. You might remember my announcement; there will be a ship-wide social event at 2200, in the mess hall. Our crew lounge is still experiencing random environmental failures so until the code has been locked down, the dining hall will have to suffice." Lirha looked back to Lake and gave him a private yet mischievous smile. "Lake, you and your staff are to organize and promote this recreational activity. And...I believe you will find several cases of suitable alcohol in the auxiliary cargo bay. Including a case of Romulan Ale."

"Yes, Captain," Lake replied. His timbre was confident, and yet his nod was languid and looked far less certain. "Between the labours of the engineers who built this Galileo and the crew's harrowing journey to Pleione," --including his own kidnapping and interrogation at the hands of the natives-- "our launch is most worthy of celebration." Lake cleared his throat, and then he added dryly, "I don't know that my medical degree came with any electives in party planning, but I will be as a student to our Chaplain and LuAnn. We will plan a party that truly recognizes the potential of this crew."

Marisa was pleased that the Captain was willing to facilitate letting others use the labs. She hoped it would foster more interest in science and give the crew in general something to do.

"Now we're getting serious," Luke said with a light chuckle out the Captains orders for what would essentially be a party. "I'll be sure to inform my department of the event and that they will be granted to attend. Of course, if they're on duty then no drink, just means more for the rest of us." The chief joked wondering if he and Marisa would be able to use the opportunity to continue to grow their new found friendship.

Marisa generally avoided parties, but this time she wanted to be there. Partly because it was to celebrate the launch of the Galileo-A, but mostly because she hoped Luke would be there and they'd have a chance to talk.

Allyndra just smiled. Well that was during gamma watch, which she would be responsible for sitting in the chair. Still perhaps there might be a few moments to slip away.

Blake maintained her expressionless calm...despite her shoulders stiffening just a little. She was not a 'party' girl. Letting her hair down was something she preferred to do in smaller more intimate groups. She could tell that Saalm wanted them to make the effort though, so she'd show herself at the party. For a while. For a little while.

Azra looked forward to the festivities, although she had seen a wide variety of parties thrown in the Federation. Some had not been fun, at least not in her opinion. Even so, she'd have to wait to be sure.

Tris looked about the room nervously. Parties had never been his strong suit. The Andorian thought, And these people are acting pretty eager for this ‘Party’.

Seeing her senior officers become silent, the Orion captain tapped on her PADD to disconnect the link from the wall monitor. The display blinked and reverted back to a simple large Federation emblem imposed over a black background. "Are there any further questions for now?" she asked, opening the floor to anyone who might have additional queries.

Shaking his head lightly Luke had not further comments to be brought up within the meeting but did have the intentions of speaking to the Captain 1 to 1 after he ran his suggestions by Scarlet first. Now the meeting was over he was excitied to getting back to work and seeing how his teams were doing with their searches.

Pivoting his head from side to side, Lake looked to the Captain, looked back to his PADD on the tabletop to tab back through the starship specifications, and then snapped his gaze back to Lirha. "You've provided us with a wealth of information on this new Galileo, Captain," Lake said, as a preamble to a question. He asked, "What excites you the most about our new home?"

Raising her eyebrows slightly with surprise, Lirha looked to the counselor to determine how best to answer. She didn't mind the question -- in fact she welcomed it -- but it was a rather loaded query that she could probably spend fifteen minutes discussing. "Well...I suppose I'm most excited for the chance to continue our journey together." She looked at each of them all sitting next to one another in the brand-new conference room and surrounding bulkheads. "Galileo has a proud legacy and just a few months ago I wouldn't have dreamed of having the honor to command this vessel again. Or its crew." She gave them all a small smile of gratitude for volunteering to serve with her despite her trials and tribulations.

"Side by side as a crew, racing off to peer into the unknown," Lake chimed in, his eyes bright. Clearly, he was taken by the romance of the Captain's words, saying, "and see what peers back at us, back in us."

Allyndra did not comment more. Perhaps she could ask the captain later, but she was intrigued by why Fleet would stick an entire base way out on the edge. There had to be more to it than just staking new territory. A possible threat or perhaps they had found new planets out that way and had picked up communications. It was one reason why the Fleet had wanted to put an observation base on Ryng. The Saggittarian arm where Akkadia was on the threshold of was pretty much unexplored as well. Curiosity, it was what brought everyone out here.

Many things were just said, but what Tris picked up on most were those two little words, ‘racing off’. He knew by the instructions laid out that a calm stable course would continue for many, many days. As Helmsman, he would need to work with a simulator during that period to make sure he was ready to handle flight needs, when it was more than just a straight line through the blackness of space.

When silence ensued and there didn't seem to be anymore questions, Lirha re-clipped her PADD to her belt in preparation to bring the meeting to a close. "Department briefings will take place tomorrow at 0800. Keep your personnel informed and answer any questions they may have to the best of your ability. That is all. Dismissed."
