Name Kai Edard Mazen

Position Chief of the Boat

Rank Master Chief Petty Officer

Character Information

Gender Male
Species Human
Age 59
Date of Birth April 30th 2332
Place of Birth Capitol City, Alpha Centauri

Character Type

Starfleet ID

Serial Number CQ-348-0411
Security Clearance Level 4
Duty Watch Pending

Physical Appearance

Height 5’10” (178cm)
Weight 181lbs (82kg)
Hair Color Bald
Eye Color Hazel
Physical Description Bald, but still attractive, Kai’s physical appearance is close to that of a fit 21st Century man in his mid to late 40s. With human lifespans reaching as high as 130 years or more, with an average of about 120 years, Kai is in fact just entering middle age. He has a hardened, well-used look that suggests, accurately, that he’s been there and done that. He’s in excellent physical condition for a man half his years, let alone one his actual age.
Body Art Because some of his work with the Raiders placed him in areas where evidence that he was a Starfleet NCO would jeopardize the mission, his life, his team, or all three, Kai didn’t get any tattoos when he was younger. Maybe he’ll get one as a mid-life crisis gift to himself.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Kai Mazen is an adaptable man most of the time, with varied likes and dislikes. He drinks alcohol in moderation and is not prone to drunkenness. He practices Hapkido four to seven days per week, depending on his schedule. He listens to Earth Jazz from the birth of the style in the very early 1900s to modern Jazz performers, as well as Earth-style and Andorian Blues. He can be either hard or compassionate with those he is responsible for, but either way he strives to always be fair.
Strengths -Human lifespans in the 24th Century run in to the 120s to as much as the 130s. With that in mind, Kai is as healthy and as fit as a fit 21st Century man in his forties.
-Excellently trained martial artist
-Trained and experienced in Combat Medicine
-Trained and experienced as an Independent Duty Corpsman, allowing him to perform many of the functions of a medical officer (or dentist, or veterinarian, or even optometrist), from examination to diagnosis to treatment, in the absence of an MD, Dentist, Veterinarian, or Optometrist, or to work as an extender when working alongside any of those professionals.
Weaknesses -Not a skilled pilot: Kai spent most of his career as a ground pounder and the rest working in Sickbay. Back at the Academy, Kai learned some very basic flight skills, and he’s requalified since, but that’s it. He can handle an escape pod easily enough, and in a pinch he can fly a shuttle, but he’s no one’s first choice for piloting duties.
-Little Bridge Experience: Kai has never worked a duty station on the Bridge or in a Command Center. In Command Chief/Chief of the Boat School he went through a bridge familiarization course. If he’s the ship’s only hope, he’ll do what he has to do, but he’d rather leave the Bridge to bridge officers.
-Bare basics of Engineers and Operations: All enlisted personnel go through a two-year training program that gives them the basics of Starship and Starbase Operations, some basic Damage Control and some basic Engineering, along with other skills. From there, Kai went on to be a Corpsman with the Marines and hardly ever used these skills again until the mid-2370s when he began to serve on Starships regularly. He’s very knowledgeable in the bare basics of these subjects, but someone trained would have to walk him through anything more complicated. The exception is his equipment, particularly the equipment he used while he was a SAARC. He needed to know how to maintain and even repair that equipment in the field.
Ambitions Kai has recently made the jump from Medical to Command. At this point, when he looks ahead, it is in the direction of choice Command Chief/CoB positions. Flagships, key starbases and Starfleet facilities, even Starfleet Academy. But to get there, he has to succeed as CoB on the Galileo so he can earn himself and assignment with more responsibility, one that will lead him to one of the more prestigious assignments.
Hobbies & Interests Hapkido, (9th Dan Black Belt in 2387), Earth Jazz, Blues, and Funk, Andorian Blues, live performances (music and live theatre).
Orientation Heterosexual
Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard (English), some Korean, Familiarity with Andorian (from joint missions with the Andorian Defense Force), Some Klingon and Some Romulan (from joint missions with both groups) Some Cardassian.

Personal History PERSONAL HISTORY:

Kai Mazen was born and raised on Alpha Centauri, in the capitol area. Here he was exposed to many different cultures, including many different Earth cultures. He was smart as a whip, spirited, and active. He struggled in school. He could handle the work well enough, though he was no genius, but the speed at which he learned often meant that he got bored and frustrated with his teachers. His father finally offered quit his job at the university library so he could homeschool the boy. Again, Kai was no genius, he just learned quickly. The speed at which he learned left him many hours in the day that he could fill with fun things, like learning Hapkido which he excelled at and which he would continue to learn throughout his Starfleet career (thanks to clubs and the invention of the holodeck).

Kai’s parents wanted him to go to Alpha Centauri University, where his mother taught, but school, or at least college, didn’t really interest Kai. He wanted to learn, but he wanted to be ‘out there’, out on his own, making his own way. Kai’s mother was disappointed, but she let him go, telling herself the lie that he would come back after his initial enlistment was done and go to school then. It took time, but Kai’s parents would make their peace with his decision and take pride in his accomplishments.

MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, AND CHILDREN:

In 2357, Kai met a young Starfleet nurse named Sarina Abbil. The two hit it off and fell in what they thought was love, and it was…for a time. Sarina wanted children and cared for Kai, even if he was often away on missions, so she pushed and he agreed. He was nervous about the idea of fatherhood and of commitment but he felt like he loved Sarina and wanted to make things work. Shortly after they started trying, Sarina became pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. That’s when things started to go down hill for Kai and Sarina. Sarina thought that Kai would choose to transfer out of the Raiders in order to spend more time with Sarina and the children. There was talk of families being allowed on starships soon. But Kai didn’t want to transfer out of the Raiders. Eventually, they separated, but that didn’t keep Kai from his children. Whenever he wasn’t deployed, he spent time with them, and when they were old enough, he talked with them over subspace or at least sent them letters. His children missed him and said as much to their mother, but they knew that their father loved them. Kai remains in touch with his children, who are now adults. He communicates with Sarina less often, usually just about family concerns.
Starfleet History When Kai took his aptitude tests for enlistment, one of the careers that came up was Hospital Corpsman. The work and training sounded interesting because it would allow him the flexibility to work in the field with the Marines or in a clinic on a ship or starbase. When his recruiter offered him a guaranteed slot in the first Hospital Corpsman class following his completion of Basic Training, he jumped at it. After completing his training, Kai was assigned to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and sent to the Federation border with the Cardassians where a series of wars and skirmishes that would be known, appropriately, as the Cardassian Border Wars had been going on since the late 2340s. Kai felt prepared, but still experienced the normal nervousness of a young person facing combat for the first time.

The 22nd MEU was deployed to the Zaibo system aboard a fleet of starships sent to recapture the resource rich planets there from the Cardassians. The fighting to capture the planet was fierce, but in space and on the planets themselves. Kai fought on Zaibo IV. The tide of battle turned in favor of Federation forces when the Cardassian fleet was driven away. The fighting on the ground was still very tough. Cardassian ground forces didn’t intend to give up the planet without a fight. Their determination paid off because before the Marines could effectively demolish the Cardassian ground forces, a Cardassian fleet showed up and drove Starfleet out of orbit. This turned the tide of battle in favor of the Cardassians and put the Marines on the defensive. The tide of battle turned three more times, with Starfleet and the SFMC coming out on top in the end. A lot of people on both sides died in the Zaibo system, so, when the war was over and the final treaties gave the Zaibo system back to the Cardassians, Kai wondered what it had all been for.

Kai fought in several more battles and skirmishes, before being selected to go through the Special Amphibious/Aerospace Reconnaissance Corpsman pipeline. Upon completion of this training, Kai was assigned to the Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC). He participated in many covert operations with the Raiders until the end of the border wars, when he began participating in anti-piracy and anti-Maquis operations in the Bajor Sector and the area near the Badlands and the Federation/Cardassian DMZ.

When the Federation-Klingon War began in 2372, Kai continued to serve with the Raiders and fought with them through the end of the Dominion War. At that time, Kai realized he’d had enough combat for a while. He had been wanting to expand his medical knowledge for sometime as well, so, at the conclusion of hostilities with the Dominion and its allies, Kai applied for and was accepted into the Independent Duty Corpsman Course. Upon completion, Kai began serving as an IDC in the fleet.

In 2391, Kai completed Chief of the Boat/Command Chief School and was assigned to the new USS Galileo as Command Master Chief.
Medical History "Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Kai Mazen has been shot, stabbed, cut, punched, kicked, elbowed, kneed in the groin, thankfully with no apparent damage or dysfunction...everything down there works quite well, actually...er...right, I'll have to remember to delete that later. Where was I? Oh yes! He's been blown up, fallen out of a shuttle, survived multiple crash landings, and lived through explosive decompression, and somehow he's still around. If he was one of those guys who believe that scars are cool or that they keep the memory of fallen comrades alive, he'd have dozens of them. Thankfully, he's not into all that. Still, he gets aches and pains in damp weather, especially cold and damp weather, from various injuries. That said, he's got a good 50 or 60 years still to go, and he could easily spend between 40 of those years serving in the fleet."
