Mission: Episode 16 - A Far Sun
Location: USS Schofield - Allyndra's Quarters
Timeline: MD 01, 2345

[ON]

Allyndra sat at the desk in her quarters that acted also as the executive officer's office at the moment. The ship had gone to warp to answer a distress call from a freighter under attack. That meant abandoning the away team on a planet with an unstable star. She glanced at the chronograph and sighed. It was almost the next day and she had gotten no rest yet since arriving and it did not look like any was forthcoming very soon.

This was an Oberth class vessel, tough as nails but not really a tactical ship and though she was armed was not definitely a front line ship. Depending on what they ran into there was a good chance they were going to take damage. As such Allyndra wanted to shift as much things to their side as possible.

She had been going across records and had come across petty officer Vansen in ops. It had not taken much more than a cursory reading then she had her man in mind.

=^=Petty Officer Vansen please report to the executive officer's quarters please=^=

=^=Yes ma'am=^= Vansen's voice came through clear and polite.

After she called she said, "Computer set gravity to one tenth normal please."

[Setting gravity to one tenth specified normal] came the response.

Allyndra felt herself lighter in her chair and she had to consciously not to put her wings out. The sudden loss of gravity made it almost feel like falling.

When the comm chimed she said, "Enter but the gravity is one tenth normal"

Vansen's eyebrows raised at the words. He walked in easily and the moment he felt the change in gravity he adjusted his stance. At one tenth standard gravity, it was a relief even with his medication. Even better, he moved easily, coming to a stop before Allyndra's desk. "Petty Officer Vansen reporting, ma'am."

"Please at ease and take a seat," Allyndra offered the seat across from the desk. "I looked at your record and thought this might be more comfortable for you. You look like you can still handle low to no gravity still. So fill me in a bit about your background. Like I said I took a glance but rather get it from the source."

Vansen took a seat, watching her for a moment with slight fascination before he caught himself and nodded weakly. "Can't make my body forget how to move in low gravity," he admitted before he considered how to phrase it. "Background. Okay. Born on a spacecraft. Raised on one. I was taken into Federation custody at age 15, spent a few years in medical facilities. Enlisted in Starfleet as soon as I could, would have been earlier but my education and health wasn't up to standard when I was 18. I went into Operations, I enjoy the work. I...am decent at repairing things. Not up to the standard of Starfleet's finest ships, but..." he chuckled and looked down. "I'm enlisted and I am in space. Means I am very happy."

Allyndra nodded, "I am more interested in if you remember how to get around in low to zero g." She paused for a moment and then said, "We have received a distress call from a Federation freighter taking a short cut and has been set upon by Maquis raiders. We are answering the call but an Oberth was not really designed for combat. She is really an old science ship, our advantage is not our teeth but this old 'girl' was designed to take a lot of punishment. Still it is not beyound the realm of possibility that we are going to take some hits that might have sections, especially engineering to loose gravity. I need someone who is very used to low to zero g to be there to help out. Feel up to the task?"

"Yes ma'am," Vansen said, the smile gone now and instead there was a firm look on his face. "And...I don't just remember how to move in low to zero gravity. It's what I was born into. I can handle it. I can show others how to do it as well if needed."

"Very good, then I want you to start on lessons, especially emergency ones with the crew. I could use a bit as well especially when I cannot use wings," she remarked.

Wings. Vansen held her eyes, but the word was in his head now. Wings. "I suspect you will be a natural, ma'am," he admitted before he smiled gently. "I will get some training together. Any space I can...use?"

"There are several cargo bays available, we did not have a whole lot of supplies as this was considered to be a quick mission. I will also give you permission to requisition any other non-critical space as you see fit. Check with Lieutenant Voutilainen. There is little use of the sickbay currently but if we get into a fight it will be busy there and again possible loss of gravity I want medical to be on their toes. Do you have suggestions?"

Vansen considered it for a long moment before he nodded, frowning as he took a deeper breath. "I can think about it," he said before continuing. "Most of the time, medical will have issues with everything floating and unfortunately, we can't exactly make everything magnetic. But I think we can come up with some things. I'll talk to the doctor, see if there's some quick wins we can get on this."

"Forget medical, I am still officially the chief medical officer. Dangerous yes having things floating around but if something happens in reality there will not be the nicety of having things tied down. Consider it proper training and just have medkits. Make it happen." Allyndra put her best executive officer tone on.

"Yes ma'am," he said as he stood easily, giving her a small nod. If he wanted her to forget about it, he was fine with that. He had been doing this long enough to know that he only needed to worry about the things that happened around him and whatever the officers told him. She hadn't said the words dismissed, but he also knew when to exit. He met her eyes, holding them before he gave her a small smile and another nod, turning and heading to the door.

Allyndra simply nodded. She really was not sure she liked this executive officer job or not.
