Mission: Episode 15 - Emanation
Location: Earth Orbit - Starbase 001, Dock 30
Timeline: MD 92, 0607 hrs

Previously, on Field Trip (Part 3)...

"Will you come and sit on the bio bed please Ma'am." Debbie said to Allyndra then went to fetch a medical tricorder.

"Of course, come cadet Yuulik shall we begin?" Allyndra did as asked and got to the biobed.

"Hmmmm," was the only vocalization Yuulik offered initially. She pivoted her head from side to side, her crystalline eyes studying Allyndra, Debbie, the biobed and then her own medical tricorder in turn. "Hmmm," Yuulik said some more, considering Allyndra's question. Finally, Yuulik said, "Hmmm... Yes. Yes, we may begin."

And Now, the Conclusion...

Engineering, Deck 10

Grevash stumped into Engineering, wanting to be off and doing and busy. He looked around the thirty year old ship. "I've seen better." he said to himself. "I bet they've gutted her warp core." He went over to it and looked around. He seemed to be the first person here. "Hello?" he shouted out. "Grevash reporting for duty! Anyone else bothered to show up?"

Edward rounded the corner, on his way back from the power control station. It was positioned away from the rest of engineering. "Ah, Cadet Grevash," Edward said in greeting, "I'm glad you arrived on time. Please run a diagnostic on the matter-antimatter regulators. If you would like to chat, we can do so during the diagnostic procedure." Edward doubted that the Tellarite cadet would want to chat. Most Tellarites were abrupt and blunt past the point of rudeness. He'd been wrong before though, so he offered the chance.

The grumpy cadet moved to the nearest terminal to begin the fundamental pre-flight diagnostic. "I can talk if you want. Unlike most of those useless lumps I can do more than one thing at a time."

Edward frowned. "While some of your classmates are likely not the brightest stars in the sky, I would hardly call them useless lumps. Do you aspire to leadership, Cadet?"

"What cadet doesn't?" Grevash replied. He looked at the diagnostic. "Who decommissioned this? The parameters are a mess! I've seen Ferengi ships with better regulators." He opened one of his kitbags to get the necessary tools to fix the issue.

The lanky human sighed quietly. Grevash would be an exceptional learning experience in leadership. Which also meant that the next several days would be far from the most enjoyable Edward had ever had. "Starfleet tends to value leaders who assist in shoring up the weak points in their subordinates. In other words, speak positively of your fellow cadets and help them to succeed. Even if they're performing far below expectation."

It wasn't something Edward had ever been good at. He valued competence and alacrity in the people he worked with and had trouble dealing with those who didn't value the same things. Regardless, he'd been trying to improve on that trait for more than a decade now. He'd made some progress. Perhaps not as much as he'd have liked, but he'd improved.

"I don't see why. In here someone who underperforms in here is likely to kill someone." Grevash replied, opening the matter/antimatter unit and starting to re-adjust the regulators.

"That's why a department head makes assignments where their subordinates have opportunities to improve. For instance," Edward said, "your calibrations are a relatively low-risk task that is safe to assign a cadet who performs well. There are tasks I wouldn't trust to any third-year cadet, regardless of their testing scores and apparent competence. After all, we all have things to learn." He hoped that the argumentative cadet would get the point. "For instance, you will be taking the Engineering station on the Bridge as soon as you complete your adjustments. Remember, you're our representative on the bridge for the first part of this trip. If you say something, the commanding officer will take it as truth. Understand?"

"He better," Grevash said, stowing his tools. "Permission to leave sir?"

The Human suppressed a heavy sigh. "Granted." Please don't have that attitude with all the training instructors. For the love of all that is right, don't.. Edward's silent prayer to the increasingly hypothetical gods of good sense were fervent, but probably vain.

Security/Tactical, Deck 8

"So..." Gabriel Stark had jumped up to sit on one of the long tabletops, his legs swinging back and forward as he looked at the large screen which showed the departments the cadets had checked in to. "...is it like when they send bad kids to visit prison? Do we have to scare the living daylights out of the cadets to put them on the right path? I think I could do that. I think I could do that really, really well..." he said with a playful glint in his eye.

Amaranai stepped into the Security office and heard the comments from the Petty Officer. She examined the other people in the room and wondered if she had ever been that young. Stepping closer to the Petty Officer on the table, Amaranai looked him in the eyes.

"Petty Officer," she said. "Please get off of the table."

Gabriel jumped lightly and neatly onto his feet, a good natured smile on his features as he set the PADD down and tugged the bottom of his uniform jacket into place. He was in a good mood. Back on a ship and having finally completed his extra training...he was looking forward to getting out and going.

Her voice was quiet and still. She wasn't angry or being rude. She turned around to address the other security officers present.

"Our job during this mission is to instruct cadets in hands-on practice with all aspects of our position. From ship's security to hand-to-hand combat to tactical strategies."

She looked back at the Petty Officer again.

"If you would like to be the temporary prisoner, by all means."

In another mood, Gabriel might have reacted badly to the words. But in his good mood? He grinned and shook his head. A small part of him....a very, very small part that was mostly responsible for getting him into trouble...was tempted to quip 'been there, done that, got the jump suit'. He overruled the comment before it could do damage and ruin his mood. "No thank you, Lieutenant. I prefer being cop."

Amaranai motioned to the brig before speaking again.

"Right. Our cadets should be here momentarily. Let's make sure everything is ready."

Cadet Danica Tamm was the first to enter, her stride purposeful. She moved to stand in front of the Lieutenant, her eyes going briefly to the good looking enlisted. She smiled to him before back to the Lieutenant, meeting her eyes. "Cadet Tamm," she said, her voice accented and quite firm. It was not a voice that could do softly softly, but instead the voice of a girl who was not used to holding back. "Security."

Amaranai noticed the small smile from the cadet to her petty officer. Inwardly she wondered exactly what she would see in the brash young man, but she also had to remind herself that she was young - was still young - and liked to look at beautiful men and women. Not that Stark was beautiful, but her mind at least understood. Amaranai could tell just from her first words that the girl was determined and ready for the assignment.

"Perfect," she said. "You might have your first brig tenant in a few minutes, cadet."

Amaranai looked back and smirked at the petty officer next to her.

Dancia looked at her with confusion, a slight frown coming to her, wrinkling her forehead up. "Do you know who will commit a crime on the ship?" she asked her.

Amaranai smiled again.

"Well, if he keeps in line," she started. "Petty Officer Stark here might be able to instruct you on brig duties from the good side of the force field instead of from inside."

Her attention turned back to the cadet.

"What background do you have in security, cadet?"

"I'm partial to riot control," Tamm said before she looked down, considering the question for a moment. But only for a moment before she met her eyes, her own honest. "But I have the best scores for the investigation modules. Analysing a ship's data, monitoring...I haven't decided exactly what I want to do within Security even now. I was hoping this would help."

As the cadet was talking, Amaranai got an idea. If the girl was really good with investigation, Amaranai could attempt to have something happen. It might require some approvals from the higher ups and if nothing else, Amaranai could at least try to test the cadet's skills.

"Good to know, cadet," she said. "I'll keep that information in mind."

Tamm gave a small nod of acknowledgement, her back straight and hands behind it, clasped lightly. She had not been dismissed so she remained standing there, watching the woman closely. Measuring her up, clearly trying to analyse something about her.

Bridge

Aren gave one last look around the inside of the ready room, his ready room. Even if only for a couple of weeks, he was master and commander. He had spent the better part of the last few days going over the crew rosters and talking with Blake about them. Giving himself a quick once over, he stepped out onto the bridge and surveyed the scene, before moving towards the command chair, and turned to address the bridge.

"Good morning Cadets. I am Commander Ban, captain of this vessel for the duration of this exercise. Congratulations for making it this far in your Starfleet career. Undoubtedly there this exercise will test you in ways that many might not be expecting. Remember your training." He said to the bridge crew, turning to make eye contact with them all before continuing. "Status report please."

"All systems are green, Sir," Tamm said as she looked at him, her eyes calm. "She will hold up nicely." The last words were a statement to the ship's weapons and shields. She would hold up in stress.

Grevash looked up from his station. "Engineering reports Minor fluctuations with the dilithium matrix, but they remain within parameters." He'd go fix those as soon as they had cleared spacedock and an Engineer was no longer essential to the bridge.

Jemima was one of two science cadets on the bridge. "Science reports all systems green."

Cadet Vear swiveled in his chair toward the Commander, "Communications are operational. Spacedock Control has been notified of our impending departure and are awaiting final notification."

Aren nodded. "Very well. Computer, ship wide message." He waited for a moment for the computer to connect. "Good Morning everyone, this is Commander Ban, I will be your Commanding Officer and your Executive Officer is Commander Blake for the duration of this exercise. Your first assessment will be to proceed to the Axanar system and participate in emergency response training. While in transit your department heads will be running you through various training events prior to arriving at Axanar. Congratulations for making it this far in your Starfleet career. Undoubtedly there this exercise will test you in ways that many might not be expecting. Remember your training, listen to your department heads, and keep your eyes and ears open. Good luck, Ban out." He announced before turning to the helm. "Cadet, when you are ready, please take us out of space dock." He ordered as he sat down in the command chair, bringing up the readouts to observe the Cadet and Ensign Miraj.

Aren turned to Vear. "Signal spacedock that we are requesting permission to undock and a disconnect the umbilicals." Aren ordered, before turning to attention back to the readouts. "Commander Blake, if you would do the honors with the umbilical please?"

"Aye Sir," was the encouraging reply from Vear, who turned back to the Comm and sent the appropriate electronic message.

Jasper had settled in and had already memorized the controls. He could feel Miraj staring the back of his head and he couldn't help but smirk. I'll show you, he said to himself. The orders were given and he disengaged the umbilicals and moorings. "All umbilicals and moorings have been disengaged," he called out, his long, thin fingers dancing across the workstation. He could feel the sluggishness of the port aft maneuvering thrust and easily compensated for it. He looked up and grinned as he watched the Hathaway glide seamlessly from space dock. The experience was something else, and he compared it to an orgasm, or at least what one felt like. After a few more seconds, and a few more compensations, he called out, "We are cleared from spacedock. Heading sir?"

Miraj watched him work, bare toes crunched into the carpet as if she was hanging on, feeling the haul on the port thrusters. As manoeuvres went, it was steady without letting any of the chug on the thrusters translate to the rest of the ship in any way you could feel. Unless you were barefoot and ultrasensitive to it. No instructor in the quadrant could fine anything wrong with it.

Vear had turned to face the viewscreen. He knew this maneuver was always so awe inspiring. He even lowered his mental blocks down just a little to feel the emotions of the Bridge crew during this event. He couldn't help but roll his eyes and turn back to his station after feeling what was coming from the pilot. He wasn't offended. He just didn't want to embarrass Jasper or himself. Orgasms indeed, Montah thought in contempt.

USS Hathaway's four nacelles glowed gently against the backdrop of the starbase's interior docking area. Along with several small support craft also on departure routes, the Constellation-class cruiser slowly maneuvered itself through the outer doors and into space. Once clear of spacedock, her impulse engines engaged at low power and she came about before accelerating to the edge of the system in preparation for warp.

Jemima watched as the ship left the station and headed out of the system. She surreptitiously glanced around the bridge to make sure no one was watching and did a little hip wiggle. It wasn't much of a dance, but she had to do something.

From the back of the bridge, Marisa noticed and smiled.

From his station at the rear of the Bridge, Vear glanced up to see a Lieutenant smiling. He found that quite odd for a Vulcan to be smiling, but who was he to judge.

Mimi watched as the ship departed. Finally she was back out in space on a nice clean and comfortable albeit old Federation ship.
