Physical Description At first glance, people are surprised to find that Gideon Nicols is a scientist. He surely doesn’t fit the stereotype that most would find in that particular profession. He is quite tall, much taller than even the average human male. He is broad shouldered, and that tapers down into a trim waist. He eats healthy and uses a regular fitness routine to keep his long, trim frame toned and healthy.

His hair is dark brown, but keeps it trimmed close to his skull (buzz cut) simply because he doesn’t want to bother with it. His eyes are piercing smokey blue/gray combination, they are bright and even at 38 years of age, show an amazed and curious individual behind those eyes. He has a strong jawline, and though he keeps up on shaving, he will typically have a five o’clock shadow by early afternoon. He typically likes to keep a well-groomed look even on his off days.

While on-duty he is particular about his uniform (he will either wear the jacket or vest variant), off-duty is a different story. His civilian clothing is relaxed, but fits him properly. He tends to lean toward items of clothing that have patterns or colors, and likes trousers that are either denim or khaki in make. He certainly is not fashion forward but he figures he would rather be comfortable than fashion forward any day.
Body Art Gideon sports multiple tattoos which include a tattoo sleeve on each arm that goes from his pecs to wrists. He has a tattoo on each hip, and one on his left butt cheek. He also has a tribal band on his left ankle. He has no scars. His uniform covers all of his tattoos and people are quite surprised when they see that he has them.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Looks, of course, can be deceiving when it comes to Gideon Nichols. At first glance a lot of people think he looks like some kind of brute. Of course, this is actually the furtherest thing from the truth. It is actually a misconception that Gideon has learned to live with, though he wishes that assumptions weren’t made regarding him at all. For the most part, Gideon is a man who tends to keep to himself. He is shy, and quite introverted when it comes to a life outside of his work. In the academic world, he is complete opposite, in that world he is confident, well-spoken, and definitely knows his stuff.

What makes him a good officer is that he knows what the uniform represents. He follows the rules and regulations, and does not question the orders he is given. As a scientist, and a department head, he communicates well with those who serve under him. He ask questions, and this is because he is a genuinely interested in the academic pursuits of others.

Friendships don’t necessarily come easy to Gideon, but that isn’t for lack of trying. He certainly wants to be around people, but he is far more comfortable in a lab than with a group of people in the lounge. But, he tries to put himself out there, tries to meet people, but sometimes social anxiety keeps him from even entering the mess hall or the lounge. Nevertheless, once people get to know him, they find that Gideon isn’t like what they first perceive. He is genuine, kind, compassionate, loyal, and quite smart.
Strengths One of Gideon’s biggest strengths (besides his physical strength), is his mind. He is quite smart, though doesn’t boast such things. He doesn’t have much of an ego, allowing his research and work to speak for itself. Besides his specialty, he has a broad range of knowledge of other areas of the sciences. He continually pushes himself to learn more, feeling curiosity is a good strength to have.

Other strengths include patience. He knows that not all science happens over night, and that sometimes it can take years to come to a conclusion. He knows others can be impatient, but he isn’t one of those. He lives by the mantra that slow and steady wins the race. He is also quite open-minded to new ideas, and life styles, and he does not judge anyone. He also sees the good in everyone - which he knows can be a bit naive in his thinking, but he doesn’t want to live with pessimism in his life.
Weaknesses Gideon’s biggest weakness is his introverted nature. He isn’t so introverted that he can’t do his job, but it’s still a hinderance in his personal life the most. He also deals with loneliness,, and there are times he has one-night stands to compensate for that loneliness. It isn’t something that always happens, and he goes long stretches without a problem, but when the loneliness hits, it can hit hard.
Ambitions As an academic, Gideon’s ambitions fall more in-line with academic pursuits. He isn’t one to seek fame or fortune, but won’t shy from trying to make a break through. He also carries a secret ambition, in that he would like to command a science vessel one day. He isn’t entirely sure he is cut out for command, but that doesn’t mean he can’t hope for it to happen. Otherwise, he just is about doing his job, and allowing his work to show his successes.
Hobbies & Interests A lot of Gideon’s hobbies, believe it or not, revolve around sports. He pretty much loves all sports, and can rattle off stats that go back multiple centuries. He has several holodeck programs that put him in the participation role in American football, European football, baseball, rugby, and boxing. This is where his introverted nature kind of does a 180, but that is mostly because it allows him to concentrate on winning. He doesn’t think of the crowds, he just focuses on the win.

Interests include more of the creative. Though he wraps himself up in science, he still likes to be well-rounded in his interests. He has an interest in art, music, and writing. He finds art calming, and thought provoking, and music allows him to relax. The writing came about from a therapist that recommended to journal daily in a way to express his feelings. That sort of morphed into poetry, and creative writing. He has written three books that have been published under a pseudonym.

- Plant and animal life

Personal History If asked about his life previous to his Starfleet career, Gideon Nichols would just state that he was born, and that his childhood was run of the mill. Which, in his eyes it was. He grew up in a home that had a Starfleet parent, a Starfleet parent that was gone some of the time. The constant and stability of life was brought to the household by his father. Gideon loved both his parents dearly, and his parents allowed him and his twin sister to pursue whatever they wanted. There were very few limitations, and his parents wanted their children to reach for the stars, to use their imaginations, and to just be free of all the adult going ons of the world. In essence, Joseph and Joanna Nichols wanted their children, to be children.

Schooling was unremarkable for Gideon. Despite his introverted and shy nature, he was popular. He was one of those all around types, he was well liked, received good grades, and was involved in multiple sports. In essence he was a smart lad, but never boasted about it. Even as his teen years hit, he never had an ego. His one goal was to just do well. Even as young as ten years old, he knew he wanted to join Starfleet, like his mother. He also knew where he wanted his career to take him, and that was in the sciences. As far back as he could remember, he always loved dirty, and rocks, and the landscapes. He really liked to be out doors, and he cared very deeply for the planet Earth.

Just like a lot of seventeen year olds in his class, he applied for entrance into the Academy. The Academic part of it was a breeze for the young Gideon, he only got hung up on some of the engineering questions. What was the tougher part of the exam was the psychological. It wasn’t that he couldn’t conquer it, he just hated that he was pitted against his own inner demons. But, he faired okay, and upon review was accepted as a first year cadet. Due to his high markings in the sciences, he was placed into the science tracks.

There were pros and cons for the eighteen year old Gideon Nichols. The pros were the Academic challenges, the cons were that as an introvert he felt lost and isolated in a sea of people. His mother encouraged him to make friends, but he had a tough time with that in his high school years, he certainly didn’t feel confident that would happen at the Academy. He gained some social skills, but mainly stuck to his studies. Again, he wasn’t looking to be the best, but he was looking to do well.

By the time he had hit his second, third, and fourth years, Gideon was progressing nicely academically, and gained a few friends along the way. A relationship even happened, but unfortunately that didn’t last, and that pushed him even deeper into the introverted closet. Science was his life, he thrived in it, and that was where he shed the introverted nature. Even when it came time to graduate and be commissioned he knew he was going to further his educational studies.

His last semester as a cadet, he applied to enter the Academy’s graduate program. It was very important for him to earn his doctorate, especially in the field of geology and geophysics. Due to his academy record, he was granted entrance. After he graduated and was commissioned as an ensign, he entered into his graduate program.

For the first time, Gideon finally felt in his element. There was book work, lab work, field studies, one on ones with the instructors, collection of data, and the academics went on and on. Graduate work was hard work, but it was well worth it. There were some weeks he barely got any sleep, there were times he was gone for weeks on end globe trotting, and then heading to planets like Mars, Vulcan, Betazed, and Trill. Breaks were far and few between, but he didn’t care. He loved every minute of it. Unfortunately it almost all came crashing down when he got romantically involved with one of his instructors. Gideon didn’t intend for that to happen, and though they were both consenting adults, the Academy frowned on these types of relationships. The relationship was kept secret for almost fifteen months, but the stress of it had caused Gideon to become nervous, and frankly scared that he would lose his career over this. Plus, he didn’t want the instructor to lose his career either.

With much hesitation, and heartache, Gideon called off the relationship. The two remained friends, and once Gideon was graduated out of the program, they promised they would pick up where they left off. Unfortunately, or fortunately, that didn’t happen. A year later, Gideon had graduated and hoped his relationship with the other man would resume, it did not happen. At that, despite only being in his mid-twenties, he swore off relationships. His demeanor became stoic, and to this day it still pains him to think about that.

Not only was Gideon granted his doctorate, but granted the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He wanted to get away from Earth as quick as possible. He took the first assignment that come up and that was the USS Archer-A.
Starfleet History Now, if asked about his Starfleet career, Gideon would give a more varied story. In response to his first assignment, he would say the Archer-A was boring, but a good starting point to his career. If asked about his tenure as an instructor at the Academy, he would say it was enlightening, and he was glad he got to shape young minds. He contemplated staying an instructor, but wanting to get out and explore was really his calling. He wanted to continue that. At that, he ended up on the Rhode Island, a Nova-class science vessel. The ship was small, cramped really, but boasted the creme de la creme of science technology. It was also on this assignment that he rose to the position of Chief Science Officer.

Overall, he wouldn’t say his assignment to the Rhode Island was boring or run of the mill. There were a lot of discoveries, first contacts (some went well, some did not), and there was enough down time to run experiments. He made a few friends, and he felt himself opening up to others more, it was a small ship after all. Overall, he enjoyed his time on the tiny vessel that could. He was quite disappointed when the Rhode Island was put to space dock for a one year refit. After a short shoreleave, he found himself being transferred to the Nova-class vessel the USS Galileo. He was given the post of Chief Research Officer, and this is where he currently resides.
Medical History Gideon experienced all the normal childhood illnesses, bumps, bruises, and even a broken collar bone (twice). He reports for his physicals without issue and will go to sickbay if needed - though he will try to tough it out. He leads a healthy lifestyle and therefore tries to take care of himself. He has had no major illnesses, injuries, nor has he ever needed any type of surgical procedure.

He is fit for duty.
