=/\= The Ceremony =/\=

The doors to the right of the room opened and in walked a tall young man with deep blue eyes and spiky purple hair. Behind him, Hugh and Saul and behind them Varro entered. They had chosen a blend of ceremonies, Romulan, Vulcan, Human, and El Aurian.

Varro stopped just inside the room and out walked three rather large burly Vulcans dressed in what looked like distinct colours. They were, in fact, the colours of the Varro house. In their hands they carried abacus like devices with bells that tinkled as they walked. Slowly the procession made it to a small platform with a gong on it. The bells tinkled to silence the room.

Marisa was familiar with the sacred Vulcan ceremony, but never outside of a Vulcan temple. She wasn't sure how to feel about it.

Mimi watched in amazement, the ceremony was considerably more elaborate than anything she had seen so far, the Nekomi wedding was fairly simple unless there was a challenge made.

Varro waited until the bells were done and then walked over to the gong. He picked up the little stick with the rubber end and hit the gong hard letting it's ring fill the room. In a loud voice he spoke, "I am Soral of Vulcan, Varro clan of the El Aurians. I come to a place that was agreed upon to claim the right of Marriage." He struck the gong again.

When the ringing stopped a rather elderly Romulan woman made her way down the aisle. She had on a large green dress that trailed lavender silk behind her. She made her way to Varro. "I am Telian, Mother of the T'sen clan of Romulus. "You must prove your worth to enter this house."

Drums sounded harshly as three Romulans entered each carrying a device that resembled what Vulcans called Lirpa.

Hugh had made his way to the chairs and sat down close to Marisa and Mimi.

Marisa bit her lip and clenched her hands to not say anything. Even though she was also half-Vulcan, she valued the ancient ways. To her, blending a sacred Vulcan ceremony with other traditions without the approval of a Vulcan Priestess was wrong. At the same time, it wasn't her place to speak out. For all she knew, they did have approval, and she didn't want to ruin Varro's special day. And then there was the Lirpa. She really hoped there would be no challenge, no fight to the death.

Eviess looked over at Allyndra, "Oh boy. He went with the Ritual....this should be interesting....especially since Varro has a bad back."

Allyndra watched the whole thing with interest but when Eviess made a comment, she asked, "Why is he supposed to make a ritual dance with those items?"

"Nope," she said. The mother of the Romulan house has asked him to prove his worth. He will have to fight the best warrior in the house."

Before she'd finished fully a masked figure grabbed the Lirpa and swung the rounded end at Varro. Varro ducked and grabbed the other Lirpa blocking the swing. He flipped the instrument in his hand and using the bladed edge to try and pull the other fighters Lirpa away but left himself open to a blow. Varro flew back hitting the opposite wall.

Hugh leaned into Mimi and Marisa, "Now, isn't she amazing." He watched the masked figure run towards Varro with the business end of the Lirpa. "Tought her everything she knows."

"Really?" Marisa asked. "You taught her to fight with a Lirpa?"

Hugh smiled, "I did indeed. That's mi youngest sister. Now let's see if Varro is smart enough to figure out the trick."

"Ah," Marisa said, nodding her understanding.

"My species has a thing like this too, but it is for someone challenging the wedding." Mimi remarked as she watched the fight, it was certainly different and she doubted it would result in the death of anyone even though weapons were used.

"He must prove he is worthy. According to Romulan tradition he must enter our house."

Eviess winced as Varro hit the wall. "Oh he's holding back. He's letting her win. I know Varro's strength. But if he's not careful he'll loose the match and the right to marry into the Romulan house."

Allyndra just shook her head, "It would seem so much easier for head of the house to have determined such worthiness or not and best match ahead of time. I would have thought only the Klingons fight over mating."

Eviess smiled, "They do but Romulans do as well...sort of. Not a lot of people see a true Romulan ceremony. There is more ways then one to prove worth to a Romulan head of house."

Varro dusted himself off and dropped the Lirpa. "I give up."

The Romulan matriarch called for a halt. "Why?" She asked.

Varro bowed, "May I approach?"

The matriarch smiled and gave a nod.

Varro walked to the matriarch and knelt. "I give up because even though I can best my opponent I refuse. My love for my mate is so complete that if winning this marriage meant showing the T'sen clan weak then I gladly loose."

"Why do you see entrance into this house?" She asked.

"I do not seek the house but my heart held captive in it," Varro responded.

Hugh let out a sigh. "Damn...he figured it out."

Marisa glanced at Hugh, an eyebrow raised. That was an interesting comment. This combined ritual was unusual, but interesting.

The matriarch gave a nod, "You speak well Soral. Permission is given." She waved her hand and the tinkling bells began. Varro walked over to the gong and sounded it making the room shake with vibration.

The doors behind the gong opened and two elderly women stepped out. One had the vestments of a Vulcan Priestess and the other of a Romulan priestess. They each took a stand by a table laid out with a gold table cloth and silver cup. A bottle of a rainbow swirling liquid stood to the right of the cup, a dagger to the left. Both spoke in unison, "The Marriage was questioned and you have proved your worth."

The Vulcan priestess stepped forward, "Varro, son of Vulcan, call you mate. Join so that two souls and hearts that were once parted from one another but never shall be again, two Katras that will always touch one another that will be woven into one. Call your mate to accept the marriage. Do you call for the full bond?"

Varro straightened his jacket thankfully it hadn't torn in the scuffle. "I call for the full bond."

Saul, now wearing a full Vulcan tunic walked over to a door on the left. He knocked three times using the blade of a dagger that he'd picked up from the table. "I call upon my brother's mate. Join us, accept the proposal of my brother if you will of leave this door closed forever."

Eviess held her breath, "This is it." She whispered to Allyndra. The mate must now accept and open the door or not."

Hugh rubbed the back of his neck as the time ticked by. "The door's not opening. Maybe Blaze had a change of heart." He laughed.

Allyndra cocked her head. "Things are different where I come from. One can change one's mind at the last moment?"

Eviess smiled, "They can indeed."

The door cracked open.

The Ferengi sitting on Varro's side gave a sigh and leaned forward, "Finally! Been wondering who this Blaze is. He must be handsome...the Vulcan likes handsome."

Hugh smiled and shook his head at the Ferengi. He laughed and looked over at Marisa. He winked at her. "Care to make a wager Ferengi? I'm betting Blaze is not a handsome man."

It was a sucker's bet. If the Ferengi had been paying attention, Hugh knew far more about this marriage--or possible marriage--than the Ferengi. She turned her head so neither would see her grin.

The Ferengi smiled, "I'll take your latinum. Two bars?"

Hugh nodded.

Allyndra listened in but decided she was not taking a wager.

As the door opened Saul walked back and took his place by Varro and Ilan and Eelim. He watched as Blaze walked out of the room.

Sheehan Blaze Ocleirigh slowly emerged from the room. Hair raven black, eyes Emerald green. A medieval white dress with a Romulan patterned green lace ribbon down the back. Her hair was twisted up revealing her pointy ears, the only sign of her half Romulan heritage.

The Ferengi's jaw dropped. "It....it's a woman!"

Hugh smiled, "And you owe me two bars of Latium." He stood up and walked over to the alter to take his place by his sister's side.

This was unexpected, but not as much as it might have been, as Marisa had been watching Hugh and his reactions. She looked at the woman, and then at Varro, to gauge their reactions to each other.

"Wow, that is a beautiful dress." Mimi remarked as Blaze walked into the room.

"It certainly is," Allyndra agreed. She then leaned forward to the Ferengi and said, "Technically sir, your bet was on how ugly or handsome a man. I would say the bet is null and void."

"Well you're alright!" The Ferengi said. He smiled although he knew he's pay the latinum. He felt out-Ferengied by a non Ferengi so he'd save face this time.

Varro sounded the gong again and held out the gong mallet for Blaze. She smiled at him and took it. "I pledge myself to Varro as mate and friend."

Hugh grinned and raised his hand before his sister struck the gong. "I challenge."

There was a hush in the crowd. "I challenge anyone to find two people more in love."

The room burst out into laughter as Blaze give her brother a kick before striking the gong.

The Vulcan priestess shook her head as she indicated the two kneeling mats. She waited until Blaze and Varro had knelt and then spoke for those who'd never been to a Vulcan ceremony. "It is now that I will join Varro and Blaze telepathically. Usually this is done much earlier but because neither was joined and Romulans share genetics with Vulcans the bond must be made now."

She turned to Varro and then Blaze, "The proposal was made, the marriage accepted. Do you both agree to a deep bond."

Varro reached over and took Blaze's hand. "We agree."

Blaze smiled as she looked at Varro. Her eyes shone with tears. She had loved him for a long time and now it appeared that her dream was about to come true.

The Ferengi watched and shook his head. "I should open another betting pool. How long will the marriage last."

"That might be a very wide variation in times," Allyndra remarked. "Unfortunately I am not much of a gambler. I will pass on your pool sir."

She sat back to watch the rest of the ceremony. It was interesting as much as it was alien to her.

Allyndra leaned back toward Mimi and whispered, "Do the Nekomi have such complicated rituals as well?"

"The wedding is very simple, unless someone challenges it." Mimi replied. "Then it gets more complicated."

"I see, you will have to tell me more later," Allyndra nodded her chin. "I think something more is happening now."

The Vulcan priestess laid her hands upon both their heads and chanted quickly. Varro then turned to Blaze and too her hands placing them on his face and taking her face in his hands. He gently touched her temples with his index and middle fingers and placed his thumbs on her chin. She mirrored the motion.

Varro spoke first, "My mind to your mind, your thoughts to my thoughts."

Blaze responded in kind.

"I Soral Varro take you as my wife, as my mate, my very beating heart. My soul resides in your eyes and with every breath you take. I give myself to you, my wife, my heart. I give you all that I am and promise to care for you, to love you, to always be faithful to you from now and until our Katra's return home from where they came."

Blaze smiled and looking into his eyes she spoke, "I have loved you from the moment that our eyes met at the academy. I knew that one day our lives would be one. You are every breath I take, you are my heart beating, I give myself to you as your wife and take you and all that you are as my husband. You are every joy I have and I promise to love you and be faithful to you until our Katra's enter Vorta Vor and beyond."

The priestess lightly touched their ears and gave a nod, "The bond is formed. Two souls and hearts are one."

The bells rang signaling the end of the ceremony.

Varro gently cupped Blazes' face in his hands and gently kissed her whispering something in Romulan that made her smile and blush. They turned to their guests. The guests all clapped and began to line up to congratulate the newly weds.

Marisa wiped a tear from her cheek. Weddings always made her cry just a little.

=/\=The Reception =/\=

The reception was off to a great start. There was music, dancing, and food. Drinks were plentiful and the happy couple was making their rounds.

Eviess, Allyndra, Marisa, and Mimi were all seated with Saul and Hugh at one of the head tables. Eviess, who was still learning about Romulan culture, spoke, "Hugh can I ask you something?"

He gave a nod, "Aye. What will you be wanting to know."

"At the Ceremony you stood by your sister's side. You just basically held a Lirpa. What was that about?"

Hugh grinned at the woman. "Well on Romulus, if the bride changed her mind it would fall to me to challenge Varro to a fight, if he changed his mind, same thing...I was just hoping it would come to that."

Saul shook his head, "Hugh, you are a barbarian."

Hugh laughed and gave Marisa a wink to show that he was joking around.

Just as Saul was about to say something else Varro and Blaze walked up to the table. Varro spoke first, "Doctor, Counselor, Ensign it's great to see you all here."

"Glad we could be here," Marisa replied. "Congratulations. I hope you will be very happy."

"Congratulations, may many happy years lay before you." Allyndra said standing and giving the two a hug.

Varro smiled. "Thank you." His arm pulled Blaze closer and he kissed the top of her head. He was just about to speak when Jonathan came over with some issues. Varro excused himself and went to help out the disgruntled wedding planner.

Blaze smiled and sat down. She looked at the three guests. She turned to Marisa first. "Varro has told me how much you've helped him. I want to thank you for that. I think that your kindness and care with him really helped pull him through the pain he was in."

Marisa watched Varro go and turned back to Blaze. "I didn't do much. I listened, mostly, and offered a little advice. It was his friends more than anything that pulled him through. It's good to see him so happy."

Allyndra only nodded. She was not sure exactly what all that meant. The interaction with Varro had been mostly professional. She watched a bit more and then asked, "Does one get to dance here? On Akkadia a wedding always has dancing especially with the new couple."

"Nekomi sometimes dance at their weddings too." Mimi added.

Allyndra nodded. "I think dancing is almost universal as is music amoung most intelligent beings."

Blaze smiled, "Yes there will be dancing once dinner is done. We decided we were not going to do the first dance thing Romulans dance but Vulcans... well it's not done. Varro has always been more inclined to Romulan culture. His family has a long history with Romulus... His Vulcan side at least."

"I see, well then, I look forward to it," Allyndra replied.

Dinner passed quickly and soon the dance started and the cake was cut.

Varro took time to speak with his guests. He saw Marisa standing off to the side sipping her drink. He walked over. "Hello Counselor."

"Hello." Marisa hugged Varro. "I hope you will be very happy."

He smiled, "I know I will. Blaze and I have known one another for many years." He looked out at the crowd his eyes finding Blaze. "To be honest I hadn't realized how much she meant to me until recently. We are... comfortable with one another."

Comfortable. Marisa's eyebrow rose. That was not the word she expected from a newly-married groom. It surprised her. "If you need to talk, I'm always available," was all she said. It was his wedding day, and she was not going to ask uncomfortable questions.

Allyndra got up from the table and moved but paused as Varro stopped to talk to Marisa. She wanted to congratulate him but also she was anxious to have the dance started as well. It was one of the pleasures she really enjoyed.

Varro finished chatting with Marisa and then made his way to Allyndra. "Doctor, glad you could make it."

"My pleasure sir, I am going to claim a dance with you though before the night is over. I am not sure of the custom, but I did bring a present for you. I hope that is alright?"

Varro smiled, "I would love a dance. I thank you for the gift. It was not necessary but much appreciated." He looked out as the music played. "Would you like to dance now?"

"Indeed, you will have to be patient though, I am not as familiar as I should with dancing from other cultures."

Varro smiled and offered his hand to Allyndra. Taking her in his arms he gently swung her around the dance floor and smiled. "Just follow my lead doctor."

Allyndra made a deep curtsey that came from much practice. It was smooth, graceful and she came up like a cloud floating upward. "Ambassador, shall we?"

As the music spun on and they danced Varro was pleasantly surprised that she picked up quickly. Her graceful movements were a delight and he had to say that she was one of the best dance partners that he had every had. "You are a graceful dancer Doctor. Mr. Galan was quite accurate in his assessment of you."

"I am light and this is not far off the style I am used to, but thank you anyway. You have had practice as well."

He gave a nod. "Diplomatic courses also include dance. Just in case. Besides I have always found the steps to be...calming and soothing."

"As have I," Allyndra replied. She took a spin and then back into his arms but soon enough the music came to a halt. She again made that deep much practiced curtsy and straightened.

"Ah all to quickly ended but then others are waiting including your bride and I shall not take too much of your time away from them. Fare well, Varro, and may the Twins bless you and your wife."

Varro smiled, "I thank you." He bowed again.

Having finished the dance with Allyndra Varro made is way to Mimi. "Ensign, I am sorry I haven't stopped by to talk to you yet. Many thanks for coming to the wedding."

Mimi smiled. "Thank for you asking me to come. This....ritual is interesting."

Varro allowed himself a rare smile. "It can be depending on the species and the ceremony chosen." He looked at Mimi, "Would you like to dance?" He saw the look on her face and continued, "It is difficult at first but can be quite fun. In the Academy, going through diplomatic training, one of the classes we had to take was galactic dance. Shall we give it a try?" He offered his hand.

"I do not think I will be very good, this dancing is very different." Mimi said, she had been watching the dancing but some of it seemed difficult. "And my tail will get in the way a lot."

"It is easy. I shall assist you." Varro held out his hand. He didn't want Mimi to feel left out and wanted all those who were in attendance to have a great time.

Mimi took a deep breath then Varro's hand. "Ok what do we do?"

Varro placed her right hand on his shoulder and her left hand he took into his hand. He placed a hand gently around her waist. "Now, I will lead and you follow. I will step forward with my right foot and you will step back with your left," he finished speaking just as the music began.

"So I do the opposite of what you do?" Mimi said as Varro began the first step of the dance.

Varro gave a nod. "Yes." He started slowly giving Mimi a chance to adapt. "That's it, nice and slow." He tried to be mindful of her tail and its motions.

"This is very different. Nekomi dancing is more...." Mimi thought for appropriate words as Varro took her through another sequence of steps. "....loose." She eventually said. "Lots of long... sweeps and flowing moves."

"Fascinating." He said. He was truly interested in the Nekomi. "Do you miss your home?"

"I have never been there, to my homeworld, I grew up on a colony a long way from it. I do miss that home, but after what the Klingons did to it, it is not my home anymore." Mimi replied.

He inclined his head. "The Klingons are...an acquired taste. They tend to go overboard. I understand that you are looking for your home." He'd heard the rumours on the ship. He'd been curious. It was the diplomat in him that listed all the possibilities for contact with the Nekomi.

"I am but I do not have much information to work with." Mimi replied as they danced some more. "We should not be talking about this now. Today is your wedding day and you should be... having fun, not thinking about your work."

Varro allowed his lip to twitch. "Believe me, I always think about work. If you'd like I can call in some diplomatic contacts and see if anyone knows anything about your home world."

"I do not think you will have much luck." Mimi said, after years of searching she had only recently found the slimmest peice of a clue. "But thank you for the offer."

Varro inclined his head. He would see what he could do to help.

Marisa enjoyed dancing. She had several partners, and enjoyed the opportunity to dance again. It had been too long. She would need to find a salsa bar when she got back to San Francisco.

Varro approached Marisa when his interesting dance with Mimi was over. "A dance Counselor?"

"I would be delighted," she said.

He held out his hand to her and gave a nod. When she took his hand he lead her to the dance floor and gave a little bow before taking her in his arms and beginning the slow motions in time with the music. "You are a very good dancer," he said.

"Thank you," she said, smiling. "Dancing is one of my hobbies. You're very good yourself."

"It was a forced course in the diplomatic section. You have been rather quiet tonight. Is anything wrong?" He had seen that keen analytic sense of hers working. He'd seen questions, comments, all unsaid. He wondered if it was due to the wedding or if she, like a lot of Galileo crew, were wondering what happened next.

"I'm dealing with some personal issues," she said evasively. "Aftermath from Kreanus. But it'll work itself out. So how long have you and Blaze known each other?"

He looked over at Blaze and then back to Marisa. "To start, if I can help with any of the personal issues please let me know. As for Blaze we met at the Academy. She got kicked out...defending me and then we started a business together." He smiled, "She and I have an excellent working relationship and she has been there for a lot of the major happenings in my life." He thought a moment. "Would you like to have lunch with me and Blaze tomorrow?"

Marisa smiled. "I'd love to, if you won't be too busy."

"We'd love to have you," he inclined his head and gave a bow as the music ended. "Now if you'll excuse me I have some business to take care of. I shall send you a message for lunch tomorrow."

"Thank you for the dance," Marisa said. "I look forward to seeing you and your wife again."
