ON:

Nizan rubbed out a non-existent wrinkle on his uniform, he wanted to look at least semi-presentable. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to make it look normal, and like he hadn't just got up.

Stace looked at the chronometre - or what was left of it - and noted the flickering time. In the past few days she hadn't managed to meet all of the new recruits that had either transferred just before or just after the NIMBUS games but with the few days transporting to the asteroid thought that she'd clear her to-do list.

"Come in," she called out as she powered down her console.

Nizan stepped into the room, and hoped she knew the custom with Bajorans. "Lieutenant Rydit Nizan reporting."

"Lieutenant Rydit, please, take a seat." Stace shuffled her console aside and linked her fingers on the desk in front of her. "I usually find these first meetings a little awkward and unnatural, so why don't you start by telling me a bit about yourself. I usually refrain from reading service records until after our first meeting. I'd hate for some else's opinion to colour my own. And records can be so one-sided in my view."

"There's not much to say. I went to the academy twice as long as most people, as my father always told me that if I work hard I can do anything I want to. Well, that's the rough translation anyway." Nizan said with a slight chuckle.

"But surely that's something I can read in your file," Stace said with a sideways tilt to her head. She narrowed her eyes onto the Bajoran in front of her and took in a deep breath. "Lieutenant, this isn't an interview. You already have your posting. But if I'm going to manage you and liaise between yourself and your new department head, you're gonna have to give me more than that. In space and in service, we don't always have time to allow new friendships and working relationships to form. What about your childhood? Why you came into service? Why security?"

"I don't talk much about my childhood. My mother was murdered by Cardassians and their damn explosives when I was 4. It left me with partial hearing loss in my left ear and I still have the burn scars on my chest." Nizan's voice was laced with hate towards the Cardassians.

"But surely that's an important insight into your character; into what motivates you day to day and also what motivated you to sign up to Starfleet." The Trill paused and then pursed her lips. "I hope I'm not making you uncomfortable."

"I honestly don't like talking about it. I feel the death of my mother and the permanent injuries I suffered are a punishment from the prophets for some wrongdoing I do not remember. That is why I entered Starfleet, Commander. For my chance to redeem myself for that." Nizan said, absentmindedly rubbing his right arm.

"And do you feel you have done this?" Stace pressed. Everyone had a reason for joining the Fleet. Some put it down to exploration or advancement, but others headed for the military side of things. But one thing always struck Stace throughout her two careers in Starfleet and that was it took a certain type of person to want a life out on the fringes of known space.

"Not yet. I'm beginning to feel the favor of the prophets, but I am far from redeemed." Nizan sighed, before continuing. "I don't feel I'm ready for redemption, myself."

Stace widened her eyes at the reply but relaxed her face into a warmer gesture. "What do you expect from this posting, Lieutenant? And are there any questions you need answering?"

"After the war games messed up, All of my expectations were shattered. I can't think of any questions right now, but if I think of any, I'll let you know." Nizan admitted he didn't have any now, mainly because he wasn't sure if this would turn out good.

Stace remained stoically silent and then flicked her nail bed with her thumb almost. She squinted a little, a bit unsatisfactorily and then scrunched up her nose. This new recruit to the Gally certainly didn't like to talk and the Trill resigned herself that she may, after all, have to get the measure of the man through his service record. "Okay, that's fine," came her reply. "If you need anything then I'm sure your department head will be able to assist you."

Nizan nodded, he was looking forward to getting back to his quarters and going back to sleep.
