[On]

Yet another new face Gyce had not really met yet, due to the wargames and her active case work. Now that she was the new DH, Gyce made the time and effort to get to know everyone.

As she waited for her new arrival, Gyce sipped on a glass of iced juma tea.

Being on Gamma shift, Nizan was flat out tired, but was still doing his job. He returned from the last of his rounds of the ship, and bit back a yawn as he saw the security chief. "Morning."

"I'd offer some sort of caffeine drink, but something tells me you plan to go to bed soon," Gyce opened apologetically. "I assure you, this will not take long Lieutenant Nizan."

"Sorry, still not used to being up half the night and trying to stay awake that long afterwards." Nizan admitted, and knew he'd adjust eventually.

"My first question is why you joined Starfleet and not stayed with the Bajoran Provisional Military?" Gyce asked. While there were Bajorans in the fleet, most of the militaristic Bajorans still prefered to serve on their homefront.

"The Provisional Military can only do so much. And they're small. There isn't much that would be going for me there. Besides, the Prophets guided me to Starfleet." If it was meant for him to stay on Bajor the Prophets would have told him so.

Gyce nodded. She had similar reasons. Only, the Prophets had little to do with her joining Starfleet. It was the fact the Bajoran government felt she was too young to act in an advisory role for their planetary military.

"I have been looking over your previous assignments and noticed you transferred out of a station posting," Gyce spoke as she glanced once more at his service file. "I am not sure if you have noticed, but this is a small town feel, compared to station life."

"I've noticed that, however, I believe that no matter where I am, its meant for a reason. I felt my talents were going to waste on a station, and my calling was elsewhere." Nizan absentmindedly rubbed his left ear.

"Fair enough," Gyce nodded, then looked at the lad's education. "Says you have some training in investigation and general law enforcement... What would you say is your strongest asset?"

"I'm not easily distracted when I'm on the job. 8 years in the academy'll do that to you." Nizan said, "I've been told I am a natural at investigations."

"Were you attached to a specialized investigative unit on your station? Or just acted in the role when it was required?" Gyce asked with intrigue. "I only ask because I'm former SCIS."

"I acted on it only when required. We had one major situation my entire time there." Nizan replied. "Someone was crossing over into a neutral zone and was gonna get everyone killed."

"Sounds like a nice posting," Gyce smiled. "Or is it adventure that you crave."

"More adventure is what I am looking for. I believe the death of my mother and my injuries are a punishment from the Prophets for something I don't remember doing." Nizan sighed, "I need to fix it."

"Prophets don't punish their children," Gyce began with sympathy. "We are tested, but not punished. And I think it more likely the Prophets were testing and preparing you for this life."

"Hell of a test." Nizan mumbled. "I'd prefer they didn't take my mother when I was a young child."

"Mine were taken in the Kendra Valley Massacre," Gyce admitted quietly. "I admit I am sometimes bitter with that outcome... But I would not be where I am now. So I sometimes have to work to see the silver lining there."

"My father always said that it may have been a message from the Emmisary. Telling me that my place was, like him, in Starfleet." Nizan chuckled a little. "Although I didn't stay on a starbase."

"While the Prophets have a plan for us, it's not for others to decide our fate," Gyce reminded her younger counterpart.

"Maybe so, but they can help us along." Nizan replied, with a sigh.

"Well if you ever need anything, let me know. I only ever want the people in this department to constantly improve," Gyce spoke wholeheartedly.

"Yes sir." Nizan used the overarching term in response.

"I'll let you get some rest now. Thank you for coming by, Lieutenant." Gyce smiled and took one last of her tea.

Nizan saluted before leaving with yawn.
