Location: Galileo – Holodeck

Time: 0200 hours

The doors of the holodeck swung open and Galan stepped inside. He looked at the familiar surroundings. He walked over to the edge of the cliff and sat down staring over at the Cardassian sunset. He missed home, he knew he could never go back and he missed it. For, perhaps, the rest of his life he’d be seeing Cardassia this way, on the holodeck.

As he sat there he thought back to how much his life had changed since he’d left home. The happenings of that day were still fresh in his mind. …..

=/\= 17 Years Ago =/\=

Year: 2373
Location: Cardassia

Galan grinned as he walked. At the corner of Delvak lane he stopped and turned, looking back at the gallery with pride. This was the final of five shows and he’d sold all his paintings, yet again. The money was now safe in the hands of an unlikely friend. Gul Derat, an enemy of his fathers, had proven to be a friend to Galan. He’d encouraged the boy to sell his paintings and build a fortune of his own. Even though he was young he’d amassed quite a bit of money from his art.

He’d hoped to branch out. It had been painfully obvious that he was nothing but a disappointment to his father so he figured Derat’s plan, to make some money and then have Galan move to Cardassia Colony Delta 3, was a good one. It would help him strike out on his own and he could paint for a living as he’d wanted to do since he was little.

To appease a father who’d never see him as anything more then an inconvenience he’d gone to the Cardassian warrior training course and had become quite efficient. When even that didn’t give him his father’s love he knew that the only thing he could do was leave.

As he pondered this and allowed himself a moment of self pity it was a scream that brought him out of his thoughts.

With his heart pounding he ran towards the noise. Within moments he was staring at 4 Cardassians offloading a shuttle. He watched as five Romulans and three Starfleet prisoners were being led out of the shuttle.

This war was so wrong! He knew in his heart that the Dominion was not to be trusted. He watched in horror as an older Starfleet officer, a Bajoran male, begged for water only to get the end of a Cardassian riffle.

Galan closed his eyes. He felt ashamed; ashamed to be a Cardassian, ashamed of his father and his people for the Dominion, for what happened on Bajor. An anger from the depths of his soul rose up in him.

He had a choice. He could turn and walk away and continue to feel ashamed or he could help the Starfleet and Romulan officers.

One choice would bring him shame and regret, the other exile. There really was no choice. He couldn’t let those people be hurt. Exile it was. He would save them even if it cost him his life.
