Back to Real Life

586 words; about a 3 minute read

"The leave has been nice, but I must admit, it will be good to get back into the swing of the things...."

Scarlet smiled softly as she shook her head, taking a moment to sip her wine as the computer screen recorded her log.

"It's been great catching some time with Lily. The last mission was so intense the poor girl must have felt neglected. And then, my injury and the surgery, well...she may well have saved my life. Not bad for a little girl," her smile widened at that with obvious pride.

"I must admit, it was nice to get some time to myself too though. Jeroen took Lily on a little holiday of their own. Here I was worrying about Lily going away with someone else, and she's merrily packing her bag and singing all the way out," Scarlet laughed, shrugging lightly. "She's a tough little cookie, how I want her to be. I never want her to have to depend on someone when she's older. Being with someone else should be a choice, not a necessity."

Absently rubbing the back of her head, Scarlet tilted it the side with a slight wince at the ache running down the back of her neck. "I'm pretty much recovered from my head injury that I got at the end of the last mission. I haven't needed any further surgery since Dr. Wylde and Nurse Vipsania caught the bleed. I have some slight numbness in the arm now and then, but I've been able to not only get rid of that wretched walking stick, but actually break it into small pieces and stamp on it too. That felt good."

"Mummy, are you talking to the lady in the computer again?"

Scarlet chuckled, offering her hand out to the young girl who was 'off screen' of the recording. She picked her up, holding her on her lap, arms wrapped lovingly around her. "Yes," she pointed to the screen that was recording them.

Lily grinned, waving to the computer, her long, dark hair waving with the vigorous action. "Hello!"

"I was saying how brave you were. When I wasn't well and wouldn't wake up, and you called for a doctor to help me, all by yourself."

Lily shrugged softly, smiling as she looked down at her small hands and leant comfortably back against her mother. "Doctors make people better," she said simply, clearly unphased by the whole thing. "You have to work more again soon?"

Scarlet nodded softly with a weak smile at that. The downside of getting back to work. "Yes, but Uncle Jeroen has said he'll look after you sometimes, and Verity too. You like the chaplain," she kissed her dark hair tenderly.

Lily nodded at that, grinning as she tilted her head up to her with wide, blue eyes. "And Aria sometimes?"

Scarlet laughed warmly at that, nodding as she pinched her nose playfully. "Let's ask her first, huh?"

"We can bake yummy cakes again!" Lily giggled, lowering her head to avoid the pinching fingers.

"Yay....Mummy gets to clean the kitchen again..." Scarlet teased, tickling her sides.

"If we had a puppy, he could eat up all the mess..." Lily said with a small, innocent smile.

"Nice try," Scarlet shook her head with awe at the persuasiveness showing in her at such a young age. Her very own little negotiator. If she could break a deal with Lily, she could face down anyone else out there in the universe that gave it a go.
