Commodore's Log, Stardate 67257.2

Reports of progress on the tribble front are all but non-existent. Not only have they now compromised most of Galileo's secondary and tertiary systems, but now primary operations are in dire straights. Our most recent senior staff briefing estimates put us at less than 72 hours away from complete evacuation of the ship which would not only result in the abandonment of our mission but also the eventual death of all tribbles aboard our vessel.

Strangely, however, there has been a breakthrough in our attempts to solve this dilemma. The most recent observations from our away team mission have revealed a sentient species of non-corporeal being currently inhabiting the Lyshan mine. Apparently, this race of beings is -- and has been -- responsible for the disturbances occurring at the facility, which at least gives us some of idea of what has been transpiring at the colony. Our senior officers reported making a crude form of first contact with these entities in an underground cave network, after which they were shown several projections of this species' history. They seem to be ancient, several million years old which would predate them ahead of any known Alpha or Beta quadrant species. They were also apparently very technologically advanced, so much so that they evolved into a higher state that allowed them to leave their physical bodies in favor of their present 'soul' forms.

These 'souls'...or aliens, have apparently evolved on Lyshan and utilize the planet's natural uridium ore for their life force and technology in a way we have never seen, and are also dependent upon it for their survival. Needless to say...the mining activities on the planet by both the Cardassians and Federation have disturbed their way of life and threatened their existence, which would explain their hostile reactions to both the miners and away teams that have been essentially trespassing in their home.

Most surprisingly, it was also discovered by accident that these alien beings are somehow fond of tribbles. We do not know exactly why and there is much speculation amongst Galileo's senior staff regarding this matter, but all indications seem to point to some sort of reverence for the tribbles' simplistic and inhabitable physical forms.

More research and analysis will need to be conducted, but in the meantime, these entities desire tribbles and this vessel has many to offer them. Arrangements have just been made to transport the tribbles down into the alien cave as an offering of peace, which would coincidentally and ideally solve both of our problems at the same time.

I wish this entire crew good luck. We could certainly use some after our recent troubles.

Computer, end log.
