Shadows of the Past, Reflections of the Future Part 5

Posted on 22 Jul 2014 @ 7:31pm by Commander Allyndra illm Warraquim

728 words; about a 4 minute read

Allyndra had seen Kohl off and opened her book. As before she had to write some of it out which she would destroy to get the nuances of the language that had drifted over time but even she had to admit it was interesting read.

Satisfied she had gotten further she said, "Computer open log Reflections of the Past, Shadows of the Future"

NaKirisi Ylinda illm Harranu

The white liquid had a strange taste but not unsatisfying and I nodded. After that it took some time but I seemed to be able to pick up his language much faster than he mine and though nothing conversational it began to form at least a basis of communication. It was not unusual that he was much more curious about me than I about him for though we tended to avoid others we knew that we were not alone in the universe.
It was painfully obvious from my earlier view that this culture was nowhere near as advanced as to know there were others.

Herbert

My unusual visitor I soon discovered was much more clever than I and was soon talking English. It was by no means perfect but considering the short amount of time the level of comprehension and grasp of language was astonishing. It was a shock that we here on this planet were not the pinnacle of enlightenment, but also a delight in knowing that there was at least someone out there.

I taught her more and the day quickly speed from morning through day until the glow of panes of the windows indicated that the day had near flown to night and dusk was now upon us once again. Of course I had learned her name and it had a delightful almost Middle Eastern sound to it.

Though Ylinda, as she preferred to be called, answered many questions there where curiously some things she was very reluctant or pretended ignorance of. Of course, she was not of this Earth that was already established and the vessel that had brought her here she admitted had traveled so far that the stars of her home world would not be able to be seen from here unaided. Stars, she had said and I had tried to correct to star but she had shaken her head and held up two fingers. A world of two suns, I could only imagine what it must look like. I also learned that like Earth it was a planet of mostly of water but whenever I turned to the question of the vessel that had vanished like mist upon the moor, she seemed evasive.

It was obviously a sore spot or at least something that she did not want to impart any knowledge and thus I left it though curiosity burned within me about how it worked.

The day was now turning to evening and a grumble of my stomach reminded me that the sparse breakfast had long worn away and though curiosity had kept hunger at bay for most of the day, the wolf proverbially was at the door.

I went to fetch us something but the cupboard was near bare. I had already learned that unless liquid that she would not touch it. A curiosity of physiology that so far I had avoided not wanting to offend her sensibilities.

I would have to go out and explained that to Ylinda. She understood and promised to stay in place, after all as she explained where was there to go for her. It was then that I stopped and really engaged my mind. If dressed properly she would pass enough for one of us. She would be tall especially for a woman and easily taller then most men but then her odd pronunciation would mark her foreign and perhaps that would be enough. At least she would not be confined to my small rooms as a virtual prisoner.

My decision made, I told her I would be back within the hour and left with a purpose to my step.

Allyndra pinched at her eyes and closed the book. She then stood and took the translation and said, "Computer close log and mark."

[Log Closed, Marked]

She then put the translation into the medical incinerator and yawned. A few more hours until shift done and she could catch a little sleep she hoped.
