Cardassians

"Cardassians....."

Scarlet's voice faltered after the single word. She fell silent, sitting back in her chair, looking down and away from the screen that recorded her, frowning.

Her breath quickened and her chest was tight. She wasn't looking forward to this. Not at all.

Growing up in the Maquis....it had more than coloured her view of Cardassians. Her feelings were mixed, but also strong. She managed to keep them locked firmly down most days, because it wasn't often they were stirred up.

But times like this...on their way to work with them...it made it harder. A lot harder.

And now she was the First Officer. She would have to keep the feelings well and truly away. Not only to ensure they didn't bias her work, but so it didn't influence others she worked with.

But in truth? She'd rather trade with the Ferengi than trust Cardassians. Ruthless, cruel killers. Killers of the people she had grown up with.

Her frown deepened. Of course, her feelings only twisted into nausea the more she thought on it. Because she didn't think highly of the people she'd grown up with either, not with what they'd done.

She hated thinking on her past. Of the contradictions in it. Contradictions amongst the people in it. And she was just as angry at the Cardassians they were about to work with for making her think about it. And then she was angry with herself for being so irrational and illogical and unfair and stupid about it.

And childish. Because she didn't want to do it. She didn't want to work with Cardassians. And she knew that made her sound about five years old.

The anger at all the Cardassians had done...what they had been willing to do to others....it was still too strong.

She looked back to the screen, taking a breath, trying to speak again, but couldn't. She just shook her head and stopped the recording, leaving the personal log as a single word. Cardassians.
