I used to be a Borg - Then I got better

458 words; about a 2 minute read

I am going to be extremely honest in this. I grew up addicted to those games where you were part of it all. Where you could pretend to be a ship, or be bound to some sort of technological wonder. Where you, in a sense, became a machine.

Reality sucks so much in comparison. I was a Borg drone for like two seconds and all I remember is either being in pain or everything being too loud inside my head. It's like being at a gig and you are in front of the stand with every single instrument streaming directly into your skull. Summary? It sucks. Bigtime.

Okay, I am getting way ahead of myself. Hi, Galileo Computer, I'm Vermeer Talbot. I am named after some Dutch painter who lived eons ago who most have forgotten. I just get called Ver. Not Fer, how it should get pronounced. Hell, if we were going by how I should have been called, it would be 'Fer-mir'...which is like two seconds way from Faramir which is a reference to this ancient book by Tolkien and...

And I talk way too much. Anyway. I am from the Venture. And then I became a Borg and then I got rescued and here I am. On the Galileo. Which is a nifty little thing, surprised by the tech she has packing. I like tech, you see. I am an Engineer. Well, enlisted, so let's face it, I am more of maintenance, DIY guy rather than warp core specialist with twenty letters after my name. I enjoy life. I enjoy people. I enjoy being part of something...provided, I have discovered, that something doesn't involve being turned into a Borg! What was up with that?

Okay, breathe.

Anyway, let me tell you about me. I am Glaswegian. Meaning I am Scottish. Because of my accent, no one understand me. Even the universal translator takes two seconds to get it. So I speak watered out and neutral standard. Saves time. And braincells. I said I was engineering, which is true. Oh! And I like stuff. Music, books, weird stuff...I like most things. I'll try everything at least twice. Except maybe Klingon food, that stuff is too weird even for me and I like Haggis.

Now, I know you can crack twenty types of jokes about a Scot working in Engineering, but then again it's like when a Frenchman speaks in an English accent...you get by. So no jokes. Take me as I am. And I hope this ship does, because the one I used to be on isn't working anymore.

Anyway.

Just a bit of a peek inside my head, Borg-free. I'll talk to you later, my pretty lady Galileo.

End of log.
