Personal Log, Lieutenant Norvi Stace, Chief Research Officer.

I'm just about to report for Bridge Duty by the command of acting Captain Blake. It appears that we're about to enter the sector we believe the Borg are bringing us to. And that does not fill me with comfort. I don't suppose it's meant to.

SIGH

Sometimes I envy other humanoid species. Don't get me wrong, I am greatly thankful and honoured to have been successful in gaining a Symbiont. It's a gift. But coming up against the Borg for the second time in as many lifetimes was not what the Symbiosis Commission had in mind. And now I'm starting to understand why I received so many objections when Stace was chosen for me. Putting my life back into harm's way down a similar path now seems ludicrous. What if Stace ends with me? A legacy of four full lifetimes cut short all because I had to throw myself out there into space again.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just losing conviction in what Starfleet stands for these days. It doesn't seem to matter what we attempt to do, where we attempt to explore, we're constantly attacked and in need of defence. What happened to the times when space seemed so vast and empty? Now it appears that it's crammed to the brim with aggressive cultures who are bent on grasping out for what we have. I didn't join the Fleet to run in terror, helplessly and briefly scanning star systems as we flee in sardine cans. At least the Venture had some bite to her, despite her ultimate end. But this? A Nova class? We can barely defend ourselves from a Ferengi marauder. We'll be hopeless against these modified Borg.

I just hope that I prove myself wrong. And if I do, I can't imagine that Starfleet will have room enough left for Stace. I'm not two-lifetimes old any more. And I need to start ensuring my future. And stop playing at life and exploration like a child.

End log.
