Captain's Log, Stardate 66331.1

We have safely departed Starbase 234 and, after a small hiccup, have arrived at the Neutral Zone and are now making our way through Klingon space. I must admit, I thought we would have encountered more resistance than we did, but fortunately we seem to be a rather non-threatening and boring target for any curious Klingon captains. Speaking of which, I had the unfortunate honor of encountering Captain K'Nara, the commanding officer of our escort ship, the IKS Na'vi. Needless to say, she isn't the most pleasant person to be around, yet I sense she might know more than she lets on to. I've learned before to never judge a person by their appearance, and she appears to be an intelligent and capable captain. She comes from the House of Torath, a family with a long and complicated history with the Federation. Hopefully my intuitions are wrong, and we don't have any further encounters with her. If all goes well, we should be back in Federation territory within the next twenty-two hours.

The crew and officers have been performing very well, especially under the added pressure of our assignment. We picked up our full crew compliment at the Starbase so we are now operating at a much higher efficiency, and the atmosphere around here seems to have grown with such an influx of new personnel. I'm sure the department heads are very pleased to finally be at full staff.

I'm pleased to announce that I have promoted my chief science officer, Lieutenant Barel. She's shown excellent poise and character, and her department's performance has been excellent so far. I am however, a bit concerned about the manner in which it occurred. The lieutenant's former commanding officer, a man named Captain Hiker, sent me a rather strange and suspicious request through coded channels. When I approached Tarishiana about it, she explained her situation and I am now a bit wary. It appears Captain Hiker is a former intelligence chief, similar to myself, yet he appears to have some sort of hidden agenda which involves her. I will have to proceed cautiously if the situation develops further.

Lastly, I'm sad to report that there was an accident. Yesterday, one of my senior officers...my chief counselor and friend Lieutenant McCarthy, collapsed and suffered a severe concussion. Luckily, John quickly found her in her quarters and rushed her to sickbay where she underwent emergency surgery. She's alive and resting now, but she remains comatose. I've been checking on her periodically throughout the day... I wish her the best and have been keeping her in my thoughts. It's been a struggle to control my feelings sometimes, but I know she is a strong person and will eventually recover.

Computer, end log.
