541 words; about a 3 minute read

Allyndra opened her log containing her recitations of various tales and myths from the Akkadian past. Those stories that people made up or retold and resonated down the generations.

"Once there where three brothers who did not have a House they belonged to. They lived with their mother on the edge of the forest far from where some of the great houses where. The family had little to its name but they were happy enough. Two of the brothers knew the forest and the sea very well but the third they did not take along as he was always making mistakes or too much noise. They called him wooden head to mock him. His mother always soothed him, saying, the gods will prove that you are wiser then you look.

One day of the great houses sent word that one of the daughters of the house who would be the next house mother, would marry a man that could bring the most profit to the house.

The two brothers vowed to make the best of what they had and spent days and years in the forest and by the sea bringing the best fruits, the fanciest shells, the delicate flowers that made for wonderful smells and dyes.

Wooden head had only a small blood flower that he tended to in his garden. One day a neighbors qwiklick came by and ate the flower. The boy went to the neighbor and asked for his flower back. "That is impossible! The flower is gone! I will pay you for the flower." Wooden-head made such a fuss that finally the farmer said, "Fine you can the qwiklick." Wooden head took the animal pleased because he had his flower and a qwiklick. The animal did not last long and died in the night. Scavengers came and ate the animal but wooden head heard the noise and went out. He took a wooden handle and beat one of the scavengers. He told his brothers that he now had a granish, and a qwiklick and a blood flower. They laughed at him and said, "Soon that granish will be stinking and you will have nothing." Wooden head puzzled over this and then skinned the granish and made a harp from its bones.

The day came and all were invited to the great house for the beautiful maiden had become of age to marry. The two brothers were laden with gifts but wooden head had only the delicate harp. He gave in to the House Mother and said, "I made this harp, be careful for it is delicate."

The feast went on and the next day wooden head went to the Mother and asked for the harp. She said that she had broken it playing and said, "Anything you wish that is in my power to give, I will for your loss."

Wooden head thought a moment and said, "I wish for your daughters hand in marriage."

The House Mother had given her word so she made the arrangements and the two were married. They became very happy and in the end wooden head's brothers realized that he had outwitted them all just like their mother had said, the gods had favoured him."
