Checking in with Myself #2

ON:

Today was the first birthday Grayson would spend alone, not that he would mind. The past few weeks had been so busy he would be glad for some down time. He returned to his quarters that were onboard a part of the shipyard main complex and in usual Grayson fashion, allowed himself to flop down.

No people were calling his rank or name, no alert sounds, no hustle or bustle. Just peace and quiet. It was bliss, the sheer joy that coursed through his body was enough to sustain him for the rest of the night.

26 was not a particularly special number to celebrate, and thus far he hadn't made a lot of friends on his new posting. There were various people across different starships he was close with, friendly with, but going out socialising with people who technically worked under him felt wrong. He figured this is how Captain's must feel on a ship, which led him to a twenty-minute debate with himself if that is something he would ever want to do. Being alone he could handle, but that just felt lonely.

Most friends he had were on Earth, their own ships or were currently locked away for intense debriefs. Having resigned himself to this, Grayson allowed his mind to calm, and his body relax. That was until the comm system went. Groaning, the young Trill moved towards the small desk he had set up with a computer access point. The screen flipped up, awash with the Starfleet insignia. Apparently, someone working wanted to contact him, and he braced himself for another boring progress report on a ship or facing demands to give one himself. One thing he had learned so far is that Captains awaiting their ships were exceedingly impatient. Grayson likened some of them to a child on Christmas morning.

When his best friend's face filled up the screen though, Grayson couldn't help but beam a massive smile, "Doyle! You are alive..." The pair spent some time catching up before the former Officer, now barman admitted he was on his way to see him and would be arriving in the morning.
