947 words; about a 5 minute read

“Computer. Is the USS Charleston close enough to a subspace relay for direct voice and picture communication?” Mimi asked as she slipped into a chair behind a workstation.

“Affirmative.” Came the computer's response.

Checking the time on the workstation she thought for a moment then spoke again “Then put me through to the ship please, I want to speak to the Chief operations officer Lieutenant Harker.”

After a few moments the display screen changed to show the kind caring face of Mimi’s foster mother, the face that broke into a wide smile when she saw Mimi.

"Lumela sayan Ama." Mimi said smiling back at Maria as she greeted her in the Nekomi language.

"Lumela sayan Tytar, miten son anda?" Maria spoke back.

"Li an kusla. Miten son anda?"

"Li an keelyas kusla dia, puno ya vida."

"Miten lie dupris Charleston?" Mimi asked, she was just as interested in how her home ship was.

"Dupris Charlseton lie lasa vajtje fortan." Came the reply.

“You have been practising.” Mimi said, finally switching to english. She was pleased that Maria hadn’t forgotten any Nekomi since they had separated.

“I would think after 8 years I don’t need to practise anymore.” Maria replied. “Though I do not have much chance to speak it without you here.”

“I am working on that here. Our Chief medical officer is an oddity just like me.” Mimi said using the word Allyndra had used to describe both herself and Mimi “She wants to learn Nekomi. I have taught her a few things but we have not had time for much.”

“That is wonderful Mimi, I hope you have as much success at teaching her as you did me.”

“She looks to be a quick learner.”

“That’s good, but take things slowly, it took you a year to learn english.”

“I know and I will, me and Allyndra have as long as we are together on the ship.” Mimi neglected to mention that the ship was in pieces in the middle of the paulson nebula.

“Well, good luck Mimi. Excuse me a moment.” Maria said before she got up and disappeared off the screen returning less than a minute later with a mug in her hand.

“I miss you Maria.” Mimi said after Maria returned.

“I miss you too Mimi, I know it has only been a few months but it feels just like it did when you left for the academy and then for the Galileo.”

“A lot has happened since then Ama some of it I can not talk about but there has been something good.”

“What is that?” Maria asked, unsure what Mimi meant but it must have been something important if she was calling her directly instead of just a message.

“I’ve had a little breakthrow. With finding home.” Mimi replied.

“Break-through.” Maria corrected. “Still struggling with big words a little I see.”

“A little.” Mimi said before trying again. “Breakthrough.”

“What kind of breakthrough?”

“Well.” Mimi started. “I found a data file in a Klingon star map and it had a report about an area of space that is protected by a species that sounded a lot like the Bespiri.”

“The Nekomi protectors?” Maria asked remembering the name from what Mimi had told her.

“Yes, it sounded a lot like them. Tall, thin, blue tribal markings on their faces, necks and shoulders.”

“That is great news Mimi.” Maria said smiling almost ear to ear. “If you can contact them I’m sure they would point you straight in the direction of your homeworld.”

“That will be hard.”

“Why?” Maria asked the smile fading ever so slightly.

“It is a long way from federation space.” Mimi replied.

“How far?”

“Let me show you.” Mimi said, turning away from the console for few seconds she sent a data file across.

It took a minute for the data file to transfer across. “I have it.” Maria eventually called out.

“Start at Kemi and go into the unexplored space.” Mimi guided Maria in.

“I see it.” Maria said after finding the klingon data on Bespiri space. “That is quite a long way away from Federation space.

“The homeworld should be somewhere in that area.” Mimi explained. “But how I am going to get there I do not know.”

“I doubt your CO would let you take a shuttle there, with how far into unexplored space it is.”

“I doubt it too. Maybe if I go higher up. They could send the whole ship near the area.” Mimi suggested, the idea was extremely farfetched but it was potentially worth a try.

“But the chances of them agreeing to a request for an entire ships resources from an Ensign. Are extremely low.” Maria countered.

“And that is the problem. I do not have the resources to…… buy my way on a ship near there. My Co says that she will help me as much as she can but I think that would be too much.”

“You’ll find a way to get there Mimi.” Maria said with a reassuring smile. “You have always been lucky. Now I am sorry to have to do this Mimi but you called only a few minutes before I have to be on duty.”

“Awww, I guess not lucky enough to time this call well.” Mimi frowned a little.

“Mosti katia katia Mimi”

“Yes it does.” Mimi replied. “Baik stvar sayan Ama.”

“Baik stvar Tytar, Li garia anda.” Maria said goodbye, she kissed her hand and pressed it to the screen for a second and closed the channel.
