Computer... Begin Program Abbey Alpha One.

Abbey huddled up on the sofa cradling a bucket of popcorn as she watched one of the horror films on the movie channels. She was wearing Camo green jogging pants and a grey tank top with her hair in a messy bun. It was clear to anyone who would happen to gaze in through the front window that she was having what she called 'a lazy day.' The film was running its credits when a buzzer sounded at the door. She let the film continue without her as she stood up and walked to the front door.

There was no one immediately at the front door because her mother, a scientist in the military was very protective, and had insisted on installing a 6 ft wall with a spiked top which spanned their front yard, house, and backyard. The gate itself was electronic and to the top, it of floodlights and camera's were also installed. They didn't have to worry about the electricity bill however because her father was sort of a green peace, save the planet kind of guy so they had solar panels, rain collectors and even a garden on the roof growing all sorts of vegetables.

Looking at the monitor by the front door she could see her friend Julian standing there, covered in - what was it, strawberry juice? She thought confused, she also noticed a bulge in her pants. She pressed the buzzer again "I know you're in Abbey come on!" She said her voice raspy and clearly she had been running. Abbey pressed the buzzer allowing Jules through.

Opening the front door Jules ran up the short path and threw herself at her "IM SO GLAD YOU'RE HERE!" She said hugging her tight whatever was tucked on the inside of her waist banned clattered to the floor. Abbey peeled Jules away from her and bent over recoiling just as quick "Why do you have a freaking gun, Jules!" As she looked back at her best friend her mouth gapped open "Is that Blood! Jules what in the freak!"

"It's not mine! It's Mrs. Shellbys!" She said waving her hands up in the air in surrender.

"YOU KILLED MRS SHELBY!" Abbey said her face draining of all color it was then Abbey noticed the screams, shouting and gunfire."You better get inside" She said pulling her friend inside making sure the gate was locked and the front door was too. She turned the outside lights off and flicked the cameras to their night vision mode. When they were safe inside she turned on Jules "Spill it"

Jules sat on the sofa sobbing now, "I didn't kill her. She was already dead... Those things" She said pointing towards the front door "they're killing everyone haven't you bee watching the news?" She asked accusingly.

Abbey shook her head moving across the living room and picked up the remote, flicking the Tv to CBS. On it, the headline in bright red was MONSTERS!. The new's anchor was reading frantically explaining how everyone should remain calm, stay at home and close all doors and windows until the national guard and local authorities could gain control, martial law had been called refuge points were already being set up in school, hospitals and baseball grounds around the country. "What the hell," She said looking back to Jules who was crying now. "What happened?" she asked sitting next to her friend and wrapping an arm around her.

"We were at soccer practice this morning when the sheriffs turned up, telling us all to go home. But it was already too late as if those things were drawn to the noise of the sirens. They pilled their bodies against the fence before it collapsed. They started killing everyone! Eating them like they were rabid bears! At first, thats what I thought they were but the police couldn't kill enough of them and soon everyone was running and screaming. Me and my parents ran as fast as we could to our car" She stopped a sob breaking the explanation. "That's when one of them grabbed mother. My dad told me to get into the car so I did, he went back for her. When I turned around I couldn't see my parents but all I could see was the dark green flesh of those things... eating them ABBEY!" He voice broke and she started crying again.

It took a while to get Jules calm again, and several tissues later she was ready to carry on.

"I should have stayed and helped but instead I started the car and drove home, I went into my parent's room and got the gun my dad kept hidden in his sock drawer" She shook her head. "I would have waited outside but I knew the safest place in port was your house. When I went outside the car was missing, I left the keys in and I figured someone stole it. Its Chaos out there Abbey, those things, looters, people dying, people killing and it is just crazy! People have gone mad! I ran as fast as I could here only stopping when I found Mrs. Shellby slumped over on the curb, she had been shot. I was helping her when a pack of those things jumped us, she wouldn't we quiet so I just ran until I came here" She finished slumping into her chair.

Abbey stood up pacing back and forth taking everything in, "My mum keeps a gun upstairs too, a rifle and a pistol" She said, her mum had thought she hidden them well in a hidden slot inside their parents cupboard but she had accidentally found it when trying on some of her mum's dresses. "Wait here" She hurried upstairs closing the wooden blackout shutters as she went and turning off the lights, only leaving the small hallway lamps on which cast a small glow around the house. Retrieving both weapons and the ammo she returned downstairs, placing the pistol in the hem of her trousers she leaned the gun near the door "Lights" She said and Jules nodded moving to help her. Soon the house was silent, and very dimly lit.

"We'll wait here until my parents come back, you know dad first sign of trouble he'll come straight home and Mum would never leave me!" She said confidently... That was 2 months ago.

March 20th, 2018 - Iowa

The tv news channels were the first to go, not they were much use anyway telling everyone to remain calm and that the government was finding a way to fight the Carnis named for their love of meat. Abbey and Jules didn't have any real name to give them. Next, it was the radio station, they lasted about a month before they all fell silent. Finally, even the street lights stopped, one night they just never turned on again. in the first few weeks gunfire, screaming, sirens and explosions could be heard but even that faded.

"Abbey, Checked kitchen, not good" She signed. The pair had learned very early on that noise and light attracted the Carni's they both had taken ASL at school so they decided to stick to that and when they needed to talk whispered very quietly and only in the basement.

"Food?" Abbey signed back quickly as she followed Jules into the kitchen opening a cupboard and sighing. They hadn't rationed their food straight away thinking that her parents or the police or even the army would rescue them but after a month and not so much as a peep from any of them they had started but even so, their food situation was bad. "This is bad" She signed again. Luckily they had fresh vegetables and water from the roof and with solar panels still had electricity though they tried not to use it.

They had spent the first few weeks either watching the news or watching the security cameras. The Carni's were incredibly strong and fast one guy accidentally set off a car alarm and 20 or so of them devoured him in minutes, after that they stopped watching the cameras but kept them on for security reasons. So far the Carni's had not paid them any attention the thick wall a decent protection and the blackout blinds reducing light pollution to nothing.

Once though, they were using the microwave. You know as a kid you used to try and stop it before it pinged in case the world ended well in this case the world was ending and the ping brought half a dozen of them. After a few minutes, the dispersed not sure why they were there and went back to stumbling around again. "We need to get more food" Jules signed waving her hands to catch Abbey's attention.

"I know"Abbey replied her face sad. "Do you think we're ready?" She asked. The pair as silly as it sounds had been trying to get fit, using her mother's gym equipment in the basement, with their strict diet and the physical regime they did look leaner, their teenage fat turned into muscle.

"Yes" Jules, nodded confidently.
