Mission: Episode 15 - Emanation
Location: USS Hathaway - Captains Ready Room
Timeline: MD 97: 0730 Hrs

[ON]
Aren poured himself a cup from the carafe he kept on his desk. The captain ready's room was rather spartan, and there hadn't been any time to really add any personal touch that was common to many of these types of offices. So far the Cadet cruise had been progressing well and the cadets had been doing fairly well.

Aren was pleased with the reports that was coming across his desk, but was glad to see that the late Galileo was really applying themselves and rising to the challenge of teaching these young cadets. Though, he mused, Some of the Ensigns aren't much older than the cadets themselves. The thought brought a smile to his face.

Today Aren wanted to reach out to the observers directly, to check in on the how the cadets were doing, as well as to see how they themselves were holding up. Ensign Mimi was the first on his list this morning, and while they had served together during the Kreanus incident, he had't had much time to get to the know the Nekomi.

Aren took a sip from his coffee as he went over the last of the Operations progress report as he waited for Mimi to report in.

Mimi strode onto the Hathaways bridge, she hadn't expected to get a call to report to Commander Ban and had to leave her group of cadets under the tutelage of Petty officer Vansen. Walking over to the ready room she tapped the chime.

"Good morning Captain." Mimi said as she stepped inside and saw Aren sat behind the desk.

"Good Morning Ensign, please have a seat." Aren said with a smile as he motioned for her to take a seat into one of the two chairs that were before his desk. "Can I interest you in a cup of coffee?" He asked, gesturing to the other cup of that was seated closer to her side of his desk.

"No thank you." Mimi replied as she sat down, while she drank tea in gallons she found coffee utterly horrible.

Aren gave a slight shrug. "Then lets get started." He started with a small smile. "How have your cadets been performing? I am caught up on your reports and taken a good look at the current evaluations, but I want to get your opinions and observations of those whom you have been evaluating. Sometimes things are identified that aren't quantitative and I want to hear your thoughts and opinions."

"They are doing, well." Mimi replied. "A few of them found the training sim a lot more real than they were expecting."

Aren raised an eyebrow. "I see. Did anyone catch your eye in terms of going above and beyond what would be expected of a cadet? How about any specific idiocentric elements from any of the cadets that, while not entirely pertinent to an evaluation, either speaks to there character or otherwise should be fostered and developed over the course of the tenor at the academy and potentially further along in there Starfleet career?" He asked. Being a good officer was more than just being excellent and your job. Part of it was also being observant and to take the strengths and weakness of your subordinates, and to guide them. The Hathaway wasn't just supposed to be a learning environment for the cadets, but for also the Starfleet Officers as well.

Mimi cocked her head to the side a little. "Sir, I have to admit I do not know what an idicetric element is."

Aren nodded. He had forgotten the she had trouble with some words, and the universal translator wasn't perfect. "Idiocentric elements means to be characterized by or denoting interest centered upon oneself or one's own ways, rather than upon others or the ways of others; self-centered;. Essentially any personality traits that deviates from the norm. Such as a poor sense of humor, reluctance to understanding sarcasm, things like that." Aren offered, hoping that he was making his inquiry clear.

"Cadet Tal'san would fit that description." Mimi said, what Aren had said was still confusing but some of it made sense "But he is Vulcan so I guess that is common. And Cadet Jackson, I have not seen him talking much with anyone, even the other cadets, they told me he likes to keep to himself."

Aren pulled up the two cadets information, taking a few moments to read over the evaluation as well as quickly review their records. "Hmm. Both seem to have exemplary records." He said before rubbing his chin absently. "Have you spoken to either of these cadets? Tired to get to know them at all?" Aren asked, wanting her take on the two. He suspected that he would need to have a chat with them once they returned back to earth, as that was part of the debrief process.

"Jackson does not seem to want to talk, he comes in, gets his work Padd and makes a start." Mimi replied. "When I have tried to talk to him he does not say much, he gave short answers to anything I said."

"I see." Aren said, making a few quick notes into their records. "Ensign, we have 3 days before we make it back to space dock. I want you to try and draw them out of their proverbial shell. It is important for Starfleet officers to not just be competent at their job, but also to be able to communicate and work with others." Aren said as spent a moment looking at both of their profiles. "To help you in there endeavor I am sending you a portion of their personnel file." Aren said as he tapped a few commands into his PADD sending it to Mimi.

"I can not promise anything sir but I will try." Mimi said, it was an interesting task, she sometimes had trouble talking to people herself never mind trying to get someone who doesn't want to talk to talk to her.

Aren could only nod. "Do what you can." Aren said before shifting to a new topic. "Before I let you go, I wanted to you know how you were holding up since the Kreanus event." He asked. He knew a little about each of there escapades, but he wanted to check in and see how they were doing and holding up. While he didn't know many of the Galileo crew, he still had a connection to them and wanted the best for them.

"I am holding up just fine Sir, nothing to complain about." Mimi replied. While she did have several interestingand somewhat traumatic experiences during the Kreanus event she didn't let them affect her.

Aren nodded. She seemed to be handling herself pretty well, and figured that if there was something bothering her she would have sought help or would open up. he wasn't going to pry. "Very well. Are there any questions or anything in particular you would like to discuss or bring to my attention?" He asked, wanting to leave the floor open for her if she needed to get something off her chest.

Mimi shook her head. "I have nothing to add Sir."

Aren nodded. "Alright then, dismissed."
