Mission: Episode 15 - Emanation
Location: Earth - Starfleet Cemetary
Timeline: MD 08, 1500 hours

ON:

Varro sat on the stone bench overlooking the cold stone that now marked Marcus' resting place. He looked down at the letter in his hand. Could he take this step, could he really leave this letter. He'd written and re-written this letter a thousand times but never had he brought the finished product.

Varro stood, he walked over to the grave and placed the letter at the base of the gravestone. His eyes closed briefly. Two tears slid forth from his eyes and down his pale cheek.

He knelt down and touched the stone. "Where did we loose things?" he asked the gravestone as if the occupant, now long dead, would rise and respond.

"With that idiot one never knows," came an upbeat female voice from behind Varro, one that he knew well.

Varro turned and met the gaze of Elise Ari. "Elise." He said as he straightened to his full height.

Elise walked to the bench by the grave and sat down. "Why are you here Varro?"

He smiled and looked at her. "Why are you?"

She laughed, "Ohhh I come to visit our ex husband often. In fact I'd say I spit on the idiot's grave on a monthly basis."

Varro shook his head. "Elise you have to forgive him."

She looked at Varro with wide eyes filled with shock. "Forgive him? After what he put me through? The black eyes, the emotional pain, not to mention that he threw me and our son out as soon as I gave birth."

Varro kept his mouth shut. Hadn't she done something similar? She'd remarried after her divorce from Marcus and then she'd left Ilan on Marcus' doorstep because her new husband did not want the child.

Elise's eyes narrowed. "Yes, I did the same with Ilan, he's never forgiven me." She sighed. "I'm glad he had you Varro."

Varro shrugged. He'd been shocked when he'd opened the door and had the child thrust into his arms. He'd taken care of Ilan as if he were his own and when Marcus looked to be out of control Varro had protected the boy. He'd gone to Elise and as per Betazoid tradition gotten her to sign over her parental rights to himself. Varro had adopted Ilan and Marcus had had no rights, especially after he'd signed them away in the divorce.

Varro sat down next to Elise and started at the grave lost in thought.

It was Elise who broke the silence. "Perhaps," she said pointing to the letter. "It's time for truth."

Varro tore his gaze from the grave stone and looked at her. "Oh?"

"Varro you know that Marcus started dating you before our divorce was through right?"

Varro hadn't known until the divorce papers came through. Marcus had always referred to Elise as his ex wife that is until the final paperwork was delivered and Varro signed for it.

Elise pushed on, "When I found out I was sad, not for Marcus, or that he'd moved on, but for you. I knew that he would treat you as he treated me."

Varro gave a nod. He recalled that she'd cornered him in a restaurant and had warned him about Marcus and his temper. "I should have listened to you."

She shook her head and gently took his hand. "Why? Marcus portrayed me as the evil witch and you were in love, sometimes love makes us blind to the faults of those we love. But that day I knew you were special."

Varro smiled briefly. He sighed, "Oh?"

Elise grinned, "You were kind, and loving, and when you found out Marcus and I had a son...you were so happy."

He shrugged, "I'd always wanted kids, at least back then."

Her brow furrowed, "Now you don't?"

He shrugged, "I just don't know."

Elise gave a nod. "Fair enough." She smiled. "When I heard you and Marcus had married I was horrified. I knew that it was that moment that he would change. While I was dating him and courting he was the picture of sweetness. It was after the wedding..."

Varro gave a nod in agreement. "That sounds about right. We kept our marriage out of Starfleet records."

She shook her head. "I'm betting that was Marcus' idea."

Varro nodded.

Elise sighed. "Are you going to Ilan's show," she said switching topics.

Varro smiled, "Of course."

"Then we best get going. We can talk more on the way."

Varro nodded. The two stood and headed out of the graveyard.

A pair of startling blue eyes watched them from the distance. As they left and got into the waiting shuttle the figure came out of the shadows snaking its way to the gravestone. The penetrating blue eyes stared at the gravestone with anger. It bent down, picked up the letter and tore it open. Eyes quickly read over the text.
