The first official act Rayze had done after coming on board the Galileo the afternoon of the previous day, not counting his reporting to the ship's command staff, was to send out an order to the entire Security detachment of the vessel to attend a meeting this morning at 0900 hours. It was a very small staff, six including himself, and he found himself wishing for a few extra bodies already. Providing for the security and protection of the scientists and officers on board was going to be a challenge with a group this size, no matter that the Nova Class was a small ship herself. Since he wanted to prove that the trust that had been finally placed in him after all these years was warranted, Rayze intended to get to know each and every member of his team well, what they were capable of, and to make sure they knew what he'd be expecting from them as well.

He'd finished his conversation with Amaranai the day before, gotten more or less on the same page as her he felt, but the true test was going to be seeing who he was working with. Would they already be an effective team, having been forged into a group that worked well together under the leadership of the former chief Gyce? Were there personalities in the department that would be either difficult to accommodate or needed a chance to step up and shine? Rayze expected there would be some resistance, intentional or not, to new staff from outside the Galileo arriving to take over the detachment, and perhaps more once they heard some of the plans he had. Anticipating sleepy and maybe grumpy personnel being dragged into work during their usual off hours, there was a mug of hot coffee on the main console in the room.

The force field on the brig had been tuned to opaque and soundproof for the time being, giving them some privacy in the tiny space on the ship, and keeping Petty Officer Nelis Laldari from either seeing or hearing their meeting. That an assault on a fellow crewperson had happened just hours before his arrival was disturbing to the Risian, and he glanced at the brig frequently while waiting for the team to arrive.

Greg was already awake. Having been the arresting officer, he had been awake for the last few hours writing the report and keeping an eye on the Petty Officer until he was relieved. Walking back into the room again, he looked over at the forcefield and gave a sarcastic snicker. "Is the radical still yelling out crap? Or did she finally shut up?"

The blonde chief frowned and shook his head, "Miss Nelis seemed to have tired herself out a little bit ago. Regardless of what she stands accused of, we shouldn't speak so harshly about her though." Rayze chose to say 'we' instead of 'you', the rebuke delivered rather gently. "To be driven by mental illness to commit violence against a ship mate, it's awful. For her, for Eelim, and for everyone who had to take her into custody. The whole crew, really."

"Aye sir," Greg held down a smirk. One of the biggest things that piss him off was when people who think they are doing the right thing assume people will be on their side. So far Nelis had managed to do that, along with breaking the law and attempting to murder a fellow law enforcement officer (another issue that pissed him off.) As such, Greg jumped at any chance he could to put the Petty Officer in her place.

Amaranai had already been to the gym and showered. Her discussion with the chief had not been perfect but at least the two of them had been able to agree on how the group should be set up and what her responsibilities would be.

She entered the office as Rayze and another officer were talking. She nodded to them and grabbed a cup to pour herself a cup of coffee. Amaranai turned and saw the brig field had been changed, obviously to keep the prisoner from hearing what they were saying.

Amaranai considered her previous post and how it was different than her current posting. The Gemini was a large ship with a large security compliment as well and now she was on a much smaller ship with a smaller group of security. Being on a Starfleet vessel - even a Science one - placed a target on their hull, so regardless of their journey, it could be a crazy one.

Crewman Ezra Koenig stepped into the room. While he'd pulled a double the last two days, it didn't really seem to read on his face. He'd managed to remain alert and fresh-faced. He slid up to the coffee quietly nodding his greetings to the people already in the room. His smile only seemed to falter when his glance found Nelis in the brig. He turned his back from her and seemed to maneuver through the space to be as far away from her as possible. Even from there he could feel the strong feelings of hate and anger and it made him slightly uncomfortable.

Terje ducked somewhat self-consciously into the conference room and snagged the remaining open seat. He'd been held up with the Brig check, double-checking devices that were due for transit maintenance, and lost track of time. And a poor time for it as well! They were supposed to be getting to know the new chief, and the last thing he needed was to give the woman a pre-conceived notion of him.

"Alright, so that's the team," Rayze said as the last to arrive settled in. He took a few steps to stand roughly before everyone, looking at ease. Talking before a group wasn't an issue he had, and as he did so the man stayed friendly sounding and relaxed. "Hi, everyone, my name is Rayze. First off, I just wanted to say I'm really looking forward to working with you all. I know I'm stepping into some big shoes here; Benice Gyce left a lot of logs and a record of exemplary service. Luke Wyatt has brought me up to speed on things since her departure as well, so hopefully I won't make too many mistakes starting out."

"This isn't going to be some long speech either, so don't worry. I just wanted to introduce myself, give Amaranai the chance to do the same, since I know it can be a little difficult adjusting to new leadership. We also have some new tasks for the department, but that can wait till the end. Okay, so, I've been in Starfleet for seventeen years now, not counting the Academy. Before joining Security I was a fighter pilot. Before all that, born and raised on Risa. I think that just about covers the basics." Rayze gestured for Amaranai to speak up next.

Amaranai stepped forward and nodded toward Rayze as a silent thank you.

"I haven't been in Starfleet as long as our dubious Chief," she started. "But I have been in Security and Tactical since I graduated from the Academy. I was born on Earth, in London, specifically. I'll be as nice as the situation allows while on duty but off duty I might even be your friend."

She paused and looked to Rayze to let him continue.

The Risian had grinned as he was called 'dubious', but held back his mirth over the comment. "I'll be meeting with each of you, one on one, over the next few days, as time allows," he continued. "To get to know each of you better, find out your strengths. In the meantime though, the Security database has been updated with a new schedule. We'll be engaging in drills twice a week as a team that'll cover a wide range of scenarios, and you'll each get a personalized assignment besides that." His grin grew a bit broader as he added what might be more unexpected than the rest, "There's also going to be weekly meditation exercises, for everyone."

From the back of the group, Greg opened his mouth to speak up in protest, then thought better of it.

True to his word, Rayze started to wrap things up then and didn't keep on with some long-winded speech; he'd pulled some of them from their normal shifts, or out of their beds for this meeting, so he didn't want to cause any issues. "We're a small group," Rayze mentioned again, "but with a very important job. Some of Starfleet's greatest minds are on board and it's our duty to help and protect them. Remember your training, hold fast to our shared ideals, and I'm sure everything will be fine." He flashed another grin, warm and friendly, "Well, that's it from me, unless anyone has anything to add or ask?"

From the back of the group came the voice of Petty Officer Wilson, "What was that about meditation every wee...ow!" He immediately shut up after Greg nudged him in the rib.

Ezra wasn't one to pipe up at these sorts of things unless called upon. He mainly watched the reactions of the others in the room as the two DHs spoke. He was curious how they would react to the new management. Both of whom, he didn't really know, but somehow came to like as soon as they started to speak. He was curious about the meditation, and what that had to do with security. He didn't ask. Sometimes Ezra liked surprised a little too much.

Though the question had been cut off, Rayze had heard enough to make him chuckle. He didn't answer that though. They'd see the benefits from his plan soon enough, he hoped, along with all the other unusual ideas he had in store for them. "Alright, that's that. Dismissed, everyone, and thank you for coming. I'll look forward to sitting down and meeting with each of you sometime soon."
