Mission: Episode 10 - Symposium
Location: USS Galileo - Lia's Quarters
Timeline: MD93: 1900 Hours

[ON]

Lia walked back to the room after spending almost an hour at the ship's gym. She knew she was only going to be gone less than an hour so she decided to leave her commbadge in her room.

She walked inside and the smell of incense was poignant in the air, fortunately for her, she enjoyed the scent her Vulcan roommate chose.

Emerging from the shower room, Calin was already dressed in a long Vulcan robe, his hair still damp from the mix of sonic and water. He stopped upon realizing that Lia had entered. “Ensign,” he greeted. The two of them had been living together as roommates for only a few days, but they hadn’t much exposure to one another after hours. In fact, this was the first time one had seen the other out of uniform.

“How was your duty shift?” He asked, pausing to give her attention.

"It was fine, yours?" Lia asked smiling as she sat down on one of the chairs and started to remove her shoes.

“It was sufficient.” Calin replied without any sort of elaboration. He subconsciously gestured towards the shower room. If she were going to shower now that she was off duty, he wanted to be somewhere else. “Will you require privacy?”

"I showered at the gym after my workout." She replied and then looked at him, "Why don't you join me here, we'll get to know each other more."

Calin nodded in agreement. “Very well.” He said, moving towards the replicator where he readied an order of spice tea. “Would you like anything?” He asked without turning.

"I'll have the same as you." Lia smiled as she relaxed in the chair watching him getting their drinks.

Calin pressed an activator on the replicator. "Two glasses of spice tea, sixty-degrees Celsius." The replicator produced two steaming mugs which Calin plucked away and brought to the small coffee table between him and Lia. He sat down and waited for her.

Lia reached out to bring her mug closer to her, but waited for the tea to cool off a little more before taking a sip. "How was your day?" She asked, getting the conversation going.

Calin looked up. He had already answered that question once already. It was likely that Lia was simply looking for a starter. "It was sufficient," he repeated before taking the rare course of action by elaborating. "After attending to my ship-related duties, I examined several cold case files within Federation records. Given that there more unsolved investigations than detectives to examine them, the Federation Justice Bureau has permitted Starfleet Special Investigations Officers like myself to do so. In the event that a new lead is identified, the case can then be reactivated and turned over to the appropriate planetary agency.”

"Sounds exciting. If you require any assistance from Intelligence, let me know." Lia replied with a smile before drinking her tea.

Calin nodded. "I will keep that in mind."

"Things in my department are kind of slow until the ship gets underway on a new mission."

Calin took a sip of his own drink. It was hot, and the aroma and taste was rather satisfying. "Do you have any information on what our new mission pertains to?" He asked.

Lia shook her head, "Nothing yet, I'll find out more once we have the staff meeting." She looked at him, "So, tell me a little bit about yourself Calin. You adjusting properly being around emotional people?"

That was a personal question, almost intimate, and one that few Vulcans preferred to respond to when it came to individuals they barely knew. Of course, Lia wouldn't know that. Like most humanoids, she was curious, thirsty for knowledge and familiarity where there was none. "I have had considerable experience amongst being locking in logic," he suggested. Looking at Lia, he could feel the tendrils of her curiosity, both verbal and telepathic, reaching for him. "If I might pose an inquiry?" He asked.

"Of course. You may ask me anything you wish." Lia replied.

Calin thought about how to best phrase his question. As social as they were, certain humanoids could become visibly embarrassed when their private lives were disturbed. "I have not intended to, but I am aware of disturbances to your night cycle. Either you go to bed extremely late, or wake up in the middle of the night." He studied her facial expressions to see how far he could press this. "Do you have difficulty sleeping because of your telepathic abilities?"

"More or less. I have to sleep with a type of inhibitor that keeps me from reaching REM sleep. There is this fear should I ever reach it, my abilities would overwhelm me again and I'd fall back to a catatonic state." Lia explained.

"That is quite unfortunate," Calin admitted as the closest thing to sympathy as a Vulcan could express. "Why might achieving REM sleep cause such a thing?"

Lia sighed "Since I can't control the thoughts while awake, Doctors believe I will be consumed by them should I reach that level of sleep."

Calin seemed to ponder on that for a moment. He was reluctant to offer his next suggestion, as it was possible... likely even... that well trained medical professionals had already done so. With that in mind, he phrased his next question in a specific way. "Has the medical community ruled out meditation?"

Lia thought for a moment, "It wasn't even a suggestion, but I doubt meditation would work."

"On the contrary, as a touch telepath, meditation is critical in appropriately harnessing my telepathy," Calin interjected. "Vulcans undergo decades of training and discipline in order to master control of their abilities as well as their emotions. While you may lack our cultivation, there are still possible benefits to such a technique."

"You offering to help me?" She asks.

Both eyebrows rose. "It had not occurred to me." He knew of at least one Vulcan counselor on board, but Rael hardly seemed like a good choice considering he was a fam krie'nuv (without control). "I do not know if I am as well suited to assist you as someone with more experience."

Lia nodded, "Considering you have more experience than I do, I doubt there is really an issue. And we're just talking about simple meditation, nothing too in depth."

"A fair point." Calin admitted.

"However, I'm not going to pressure you. If you would like to help, I'd appreciate it. If not, that's acceptable too."

Calin thought it over in his mind. "I will assist you."

"Thank you, and I'll owe you one." She smiled, "Whatever you want, let me know."
