Like Sand Through the Hourglass… - Part Two

3,350 words; about a 17 minute read

Mission: Episode 10 - Symposium
Location: USS Galileo: Von Haeften's Quarters
Timeline: MD88 1347hours

Previously....

Following behind, Rebecca winced a little at Wil’s question. “Um...I’m not sure that would be such a good idea. Firstly because he outranks you by about…” Mentally the yeoman counted before finishing, “...four ranks? And secondly because technically he is your superior officer and I’m pretty sure you could be court martialed for setting a superior officer straight.”

And now....

Wil’s eyes went wider and wider as his brain did the math. “Four? You don’t mean…?”

Tilting her head to the side, Rebecca looked at Wil with curiosity. Surely he had realised it as soon as she walked into the office, “Your oh ten hundred hours meeting is with the Captain’s Yeoman is it not?”

Wilhelm’s legs felt heavy, and he staggered backward, sitting heavily into his chair.

As she watched Wilhelm’s reaction, a recollection of when entered the office came back to Rebecca as a realisation hit her, “Or were you expecting another black haired woman?”

“I was expecting the Skipper’s Yeoman. When I saw you, I was hoping she had gotten lost on her way here.” Wil’s tone clearly indicated a joke, but his expression of wild-eyed shock never changed as he spoke.

Wil put his head in his hands, partly joking, partly serious.

“Oh God, I made love to the Skipper’s Yeoman! Worse! I’m courting the Captain’s Yeoman!” he lamented.

He started pacing, smiling a nervous smile as he did so, a nervous laugh joining it soon thereafter.

“I’m dead. I’m going to be fired by the end of the day...I see it.” the German stated.

“No Wilhelm….” Rebecca moved around to Wilhelm’s side of the desk, resting her tailbone against the edge as she watched him at his pacing, “...you made love to Rebecca Williams, me. You’re…” The woman felt the colour leave her face as she recognised his next word but didn’t understand what he could have meant. “What do you mean that you are courting me?”

Wil stopped in his tracks as he realized he had said what was in his head. He turned towards Rebecca, afraid he might have scared her by his words.

“Uh...I...that is…” He sputtered, his hands coming up in a helpless gesture.

The German took a deep breath and decided that he should just speak his mind.

“Rebecca, my sweet...I like you, more than any other woman, heck, any person, I’ve ever met. You are smart, and charming, and funny, and I like spending time with you, and I don’t just mean our uh...physical activities.”

Wil took a small step towards Rebecca, the woman of his impossible dreams.

“I have seen many things in my travels across the stars: nebulas, stars forming, stars dying, galactic clusters of gases colliding into a lovely kaleidoscope of colors…”

The German took another step towards the lady.

“I have seen alien cultures that are marvels of civilization and technology…”

Another small step. He was now close enough to touch Rebecca.

“In all that, I have never seen anything...anything, that fills my heart with as much joy, as much laughter, and as much awe...I have never seen anything as beautiful as you are when you smile at my dumb jokes.” Wil reached out to gingerly touch his lover’s face, afraid she might pull away.

As her breathing became more laboured, Rebecca’s mind screamed run...run as fast as you can go. Fear momentarily alite her eyes as she listened to his words and begun to comprehend that in those few hours together something big had happened between them both...something big enough to turn life as she knew it on her head.

Beyond the walls the growing panic threatened to throw up, Rebecca felt the ever so gentle brush of Wilhelm’s fingertips against her cheek. The warmth from the touch surprised her even more as it flooded her body until it reached the center of her chest where her heart started to beat harder.

When his hand came to gently rest on her cheek and Wil noticed she did not recoil, he felt emboldened to say the rest.

“When we spent that night together, it was more than just carnal pleasure to me. I knew I met a lady I want to know, who I want in my life. I want to be in your life if you’ll have me. I want to be yours. I want to be your guy Rebecca...and I want you to be my gal...I meant exactly what I said...I wish to court you...like the knights of old you talk about so often. I want to give you flowers and chocolates and affection, spend time with you curled up watching some terrible holonovel, or holding you in the cold of the night tightly against me to warm you. All I need to know, my sweet Haeschen* is if you think you might want the same of me.”

His hand stroked her cheek as softly as if he was afraid she would break at even the most delicate touch, waiting for her reaction.

Her words came out as almost a hoarse whisper as her hands gripped the edge of Wilhelm’s desk, her knuckles white from holding on so hard. “Damn you Wilhelm...damn you to hell and back.” Even as she said the words, Rebecca felt the first tear cling to her eyelash before falling to trace a path along her cheek. “It was only ever meant to be one night...I don’t...didn't do anything more than that. I’ve never wanted to have more than that.”

Wilhelm was unsure if that was a rejection. All he knew was that at that moment, it felt like his world was crumbling, and the beauty had gone out of the universe, like a snuffed candle, it’s only memory the wisps of smoke to denote its existence. He began to withdraw his hand.

As she felt Wilhelm’s hand begin to pull back, Rebecca reached out quick to pull it back, taking it in her own as she cradled both in against her cheek. “I’m twenty nine years old and in all that time I’ve never met someone able to turn my life upside down the way you have done in mere hours. I never wanted more than one night until I met you.”

Rebecca paused for a moment as she closed her eyes and just tried to gather herself for a moment. She wasn’t good at talking, at telling people how she felt. How could she be good at something that she’d never had experience with before. “You scare me...I scare me….It scares me how in the time we were apart, the thought of never seeing you again caused me to ache. I’d close my eyes at night and remember the time we spent together. I’d open my eyes in the morning and the sadness would be overwhelming when I realised you weren’t there.”

Opening her eyes, Rebecca looked up to the grey eyes that looked down at her. The hint of blue in their corners was striking, burning bright as if trying to tell her something. “This scares me...you scare me.”

“I’m sorry if I do my sweet. I never meant to scare you. I want you to feel safe with me; I want to keep you from all harm…” He smirked, trying to make her smile. “...and maybe you can protect me sometimes too.”

He kissed her, light as a feather, as if she were the aforementioned candle, desperate not to snuff her out.

“The truth is I’m just as scared as you. I’m terrified; terrified that you may one day see something in me you don’t like, or don’t approve of. Terrified that maybe I won’t be a good provider,a good lover, an attentive listener, a good…”

The German hesitated before saying the word.

“...boyfriend. But all I want is to be given the chance, the chance to be those good things to you, for you. To show that I am a good man, one worthy of the affection of so grand a lady as yourself, so that, maybe, one day, they sing tales of our courtship, and how it overcame all odds, overcame rank and Starfleet and the Gods themselves. Will you have me my sweet?”
His eyes, blue now as the cresting waves crashing upon the shore, sparkled wet with barely restrained tears as he said the words he so badly wanted to say, needed to say.

Seeing the dampness in Wilhelm’s eyes was almost her undoing. Taking his other hand in hers, Rebecca pulled him closer until he stepped between her legs. Leaning up, her lips brushed across his in a kiss as light as the one he had given her before. Butterfly kisses She wasn’t certain where the thought came from but it seemed to fit, a kiss so soft and as delicate as the transparent wings of a butterfly. There to be treasured and loved.

As she tightened her hold on each of his hands, Rebecca only broke the kiss so as to lean up and press a kiss against each of her lover’s eyes. Her lips taking away any tears which threatened to spill as her own was doing now. “I’m not sure how this has happened but whatever God or entity which may have been involved...I can only thank them. Ich war geboren der tag du mich gekusst. Bitte nicht immer lassen die kusse zu beenden.**.”

Wil all but leapt into the air for joy at her words. Another thing he loved about this woman is that his language sounded so blasted good on her tongue. Von Haeften felt like he bounded towards her but in reality he took the smallest of possible steps to cross the threshold, so delicate did she seem in that moment that he wished would last for the rest of eternity.

Ich will nie kuesse sie halten suesse...niemals.”*** Wilhelm said.

To emphasize his point, the scientist put everything he had, every joy, every fear now made hollow, every hope and dream, every wish fulfilled, every future vision he had of them, into one single kiss. He kissed her like he had kissed no woman ever, and if he had his way, he would never again kiss another woman so long as he drew breath.

Everything about Wilhelm made Rebecca cry out for more. As her lips pressed against his, tears filled her eyes as she felt the passion and sacrifice he put into that one caress. The movement of his lips across hers as he teased and stroked and stirred a longing in the woman that she had never known before having met him. In such a short time, he had become her everything.

Wilhelm finally broke away from his kiss, their lips making that slight smacking sound that Wil found irresistible when they kissed passionately. He smiled at the woman he adored, now holding her head gently with both of his hands.

“Listen babe…” he began. “I don’t care if you’re an enlisted woman, or the Captain’s Aide, or the Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet, all I know is that I want you. I’ll figure something out. I may not be able to shout from the nearest mountain how I feel about you, but I’m not going to walk on eggshells around you either.” the German kissed her forehead.

“I have to tell the Skipper that I plan on courting you.” he stated.

From her position still propped against the desk, Rebecca ducked her head in under Wilhelm’s chin as she found that she couldn’t suppress a smile. The smile was both pure happiness at what had transpired since they found each other again and also the thought of how that conversation would go. “You’ve met Captain Holiday I assume? It won’t be easy...he likes to run a tight ship.”

“Yeah, I have darling. He can be a hardass, but all I have to do is show him that no regulation or rule is being violated, and since I don't rate you, there’s no conflict of interest. At most, I presume he’ll ask that we be discrete. Sorry my dear, but it looks like we can't make out in the lounge anytime soon.” he quipped.

At the thought of locations to make out, Rebecca suddenly went still as a thought came over her. Emmerson...and wasn’t he under Wilhelm’s jurisdiction? She wasn’t quite sure how to handle that, “Wilhelm...I have a roommate. A male roommate. Ah...before you, I guess...I mean...we...well we had..you know a few times. But it was before you...since you I haven’t wanted anybody else. I promise.”

Von Haeften laughed mirthfully.

“Darling, I don’t care what happened before you and I. The past is just that. I’m not going to be a jealous boyfriend or spiteful or anything like that. I care about you. Besides, I wasn’t a blushing bride myself when we met.” he said with a smile.

His face turned deadly serious.

“However, if he tries anything from this point on, I’m going to assign him to study fecal matter until his eyes turn brown.” he said with a growl in his voice.

He smiled like a little boy that had just gotten away with a prank when he saw that Rebecca had, for a few seconds, taken his threat seriously.

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed at Wil’s joke before her own voice took on a serious note, a playful light twinkling in her eye, “Careful Von Haeften...I know how to hurt you the most….” Leaning over she moved her hand to his back as she stroked her fingertips down the length of his spine before leaning in to whisper softly in his ear, “How are those scratches that got you into so much trouble last time?”

“They ache when you are near, like an old man who’s bum knee can sense snow on the horizon.” he said, his tone serious. “Other than that, they’ve healed. One got infected slightly and I had to see our Doc. You would not believe the lies I had to tell her about how I got them!” he laughed.

Rebecca winced a little at the mention of visiting the ship’s sickbay. Herself and some of the staff in sickbay didn’t have the best of relations...especially with Mott. She hadn’t quite forgiven him for the incident involving knocking her out and dragging her through the ship rolled in a piece of carpet. Added to that the headache she’d had with security after.

A playful smile played across her lips as she turned her head to rest it against his shoulder, just taking a moment to enjoy the moments of calmness before having to enter back into a world of absolute chaos. “Next time let me know in advance...I have blackmail material you can use against some of the Doctor’s there if they don’t play nice.”

“Thanks Suesse****.” he said. The German kissed her again. He could not help himself. He was so happy to see her, consequences of their serving together be damned.

When he finally came up for air. Wil smiled playfully at the woman he thought of as his own personal Venus.

“Regardless of the consequences, may I see you tonight? I’ll make you a nice baked Salmon and a creme brulee...well, the replicator will, anyway.” the CSO said.

“I don't know…” Leaning back up, Rebecca kissed him once as she softened her lips and just ever so gently flickered get tongue across his before breaking away to look up at him. “Can I have my choice of desserts?”

“You have to ask nicely.” Wil said, his voice turning playful.

Tilting her head a little to the side, Rebecca looked up at her lover from under her eyelashes. “Umm...pretty please with sugar on top?”

“What...kind of dessert do you want my sweet?” the German man asked, his eyes sparkling as he wrapped his arms around Rebecca’s waist.

As Wil stepped in closer Rebecca’s eyes twinkled as she leaned up and nibbled for a nanosecond on the side of her lover's neck before drawing back with a laugh on her lips. “Don't want to spoil it now do I….I’ll bring dessert and you manage the rest…”

Even as she said the words, the door hailed a presence outside before a voice came over the comm, “Ah...boss...you're needed in the main hydroponics bay...we may have a problem.” The Irish lilt of the voice that spoke sounded very nervous as he spoke his words and waited for a reply.

Wil sprang up as if he had been caught pleasuring himself.

“Uh..be right there.”

“Duty calls dear.” Wil said with a shrug. “I’ll see you tonight. Is 1900 good for you?”

Rebecca only laughed as Wil sprung away, it was a pity that they'd been interrupted, she'd been hoping for the possibility of a repeat. “Make it twenty hundred hours as I’ve some reports I've to get through before day ends or Holiday will have more reasons to be upset at me.”

“See you then.”

Wil started motioning towards the door, before stopping and thinking better of it. He returned to Rebecca, grabbed her by the waist, lifting her up before carrying her in his arms as Rebecca suppressed a squeal of surprise. The German scientist dipped her nearly horizontal before planting yet another kiss on her delicious lips. As he looked down at her momentarily before returning her upright, Wil smirked.

“No dessert or sweet will ever taste as good as those ruby lips my sweet.” He said, clapping his hands together with enthusiasm like a school boy. “God, it’s so good to see you here, whatever the complications.”

He gave her one more peck on the cheek before going out the door.

“Bye.” he said sweetly, that grin still plastered over his face.

Rebecca was still feeling breathless after Wil’s actions. She was the first to admit she was slim and he was strong but still...she wasn't afraid to admit that for a split second she was expecting him to drop her. Still dazed, she waved her hand after him.

In the hallway, the NCO who had dragged Wil away from his lover noticed said grin.

“Are you alright sir?” he asked.

“Now? I doubt there is a man on this ship who now feels as good as I do now.” Wil said. he barely noticed that his pace was extremely brisk as he walked.

Before Wil could leave her sight, Rebecca darted out the door with PADD in hand. She swore under her breath as she realised her whole point in being here hadn't been achieved...the officer first known to her as a man who hide away and fielded out his work to others had managed to get away from her again. “Lieutenant Von Haeften. I'll expect this PADD returned to me by oh six hundred hours in the morning. We can't wait any longer in filing this with the Captain."
