Mission: Episode 03 - Frontier
Location: USS Galileo - Deck 1 - Ready Room
Timeline: MD 07 2000

ON:

[Security Office]

Lt. Rhodes sat in the Security Office quietly. It had been a long day of meeting after meeting. Many things had taken place and he knew he needed to pass this info onto the XO. He took another deep slow breath. He also needed to inform the Commander about the situation that occurred on the firing range.

He closed his eyes and tried to clear his mind. With authority comes great responsibility. With responsibility comes assured integrity. With integrity comes accountability to authority.

He touched the comm on the desk, =^= Lt. Rhodes to Commander Holliday. =^=

=^=This is Holliday. Go Ahead. =^=

=^= Sir, May I have a few minutes of your time? I need to pass on to you Departmental status. =^=

=^=Ready Room in 5 minutes - Holliday out. =^=

[Ready Room]

Lt. Rhodes Entered the Bridge and went to the Tactical station. PO Christoph was standing in at the moment.

"Lieutenant." She said cordially.

"What's our status?" Theron inquired trying to be sociable.

Bree replied, "No current survey missions. Everything is quiet."

"Very good." Theron replied casually and turned toward the Ready Room. With PADD in hand Rhodes activated the door chime and did a quick check of his uniform wanting to appear his best.

"Enter." John called out flatly. He knew of course who the visitor was going to be, but there was still protocol to follow.

Rhodes entered, walked up and stopped at attention across the desk from Commander Holliday. "Sir, the Security Shift schedule has been revised to a 3 shift coverage as requested." He extended the PADD toward the XO.

------------------------------
Alpha Shift
Rice, Orexil, Davis, Stark,

Beta Shift
Rhodes, Kiwosk, Christoph

Gamma Shift
Mormont, Smoak, Chara
------------------------------

Rhodes spoke up as the Commander reviewed the list, "Lieutenant Rice and I have selected Staff Warrant Officer Amon Mormont as Tactical Officer for Gamma Shift . . . with your approval, of course."

Taking a moment to flick through the background information held on the PADD, John saw no immediate problems with changing the ship's shift patterns.

"I see no problem - is the Warrant Officer up to the challenge?"

With confidence Rhodes replied, "Yes. I believe he is. He has shown competency during those times he has taken the bridge position when filling in, and he has stated himself that he is ready for this new responsibility."

"Very well then Mr. Rhodes - consider it approved. I'll make the necessary adjustments to the official rota and you can update your departmental duty shifts as you see fit."

John replied, sliding his thumb over the PADD to input his authorization, making the transfer official and assigning the Warrant Officer to the Bridge during the usually uneventful Gamma shift.

Theron could have let this slide and even Lt. Orexil may never have brought it up, but he knew that it was best to always be honest with those that depended on you. Continuing to stand at attention, Rhodes reported, "I am sorry, but need to report to you an infraction on my own part."

"An infraction? Go on Lieutenant?" The XO placed the PADD down in front of him, before gathering his hands together, fingers interlocked on the desk.

Rhodes answered very, "During a training exercise I emotionally berated Lt. Orexil and struck her on the face."

"For what purpose?" Holliday enquired. It was a training exercise so had there been a degree of combat practice then the XO could understand an accidental mis-strike.

Rhodes lowered his head slightly embarrassed that it had taken place. He explained, "My intent was to provide an intense, distracting, and more than difficult situation, because she seemed so adamant about getting back to work."Looking up at the XO, "Not that I did not trust her. I just wanted her to realize just how bad it could get and she had to be able to defend the ship and the bridge under the worse circumstances."

Rhodes lowered his eyes and head again slightly, "Like I said, I went beyond the line. I did not realize what I had done until afterward."

"And has Miss Orexil placed charges against you? Whilst I don't approve of an officer striking another it sounds more like you were attempting to demonstrate the necessity for further development aboard ship."

John knew that Kestra had been having a somewhat difficult time becoming fit for duty again, she had been an excellent Chief Security Officer before her injury and the XO had wanted to see her return to full effectiveness as soon as possible. What he didn't want however, was for his new CSO to turn into a copy of Lieutenant Stone - he had only just gotten over the headache of that particular officer.

The Lieutenant replied, "I do not believe that she has, as yet. I felt it important to inform you in either case."

"I appreciate the diligence Lieutenant...if anything comes of it then I will deal with it at the time."

Rhodes then interjected, "The crew has asked about the Memorial service for Lt. Stone."

John paused for a moment, looking at his desk as he took a deep breath and held back his own anger at the death of an officer in such a senseless fashion. After a moment he exhaled, before looking back up again to meet the Lieutenant's eyes.

"I will make a shipwide announcement shortly with details...I know some members of your team weren't exactly happy with Lieutenant Stone's management style but I want that put aside - we show a united front at the loss of one of our own, understood?"

"Yes Sir." Rhodes replied solemnly, and then spoke up, "Along those same lines of unity. Lt. Rice and I would like . . well we are planning a department party. A casual affair with no rank. We will, of course, plan this for a couple days following the Memorial service, so there is no misunderstanding."

Jonathan nodded in approval, whilst it might not have been on par with the more formal proceedings that Starfleet required for a fallen comrade, it was still better than simply forgetting the service given.

"An excellent idea. You have my permission to proceed."

The security chief continued, "Of course, we would very much like an appearance from yourself and the Captain, if possible."

"I will make the suggestion. Duty shifts allowing of course." The XO replied with a smile. The captain had a busy enough schedule but given half the chance, she would put in an appearance, even if it was just for morale purposes.

"Thank you Sir." Rhodes replied then asked, "Is there anything else I need to pass on to my department?" Theron realized he was getting more comfortable taking ownership of the security department.

"Negative Lieutenant. That will be all for now. Carry on." the XO replied, he was pleased with the impact Rhodes was making on the dept, and for the meantime, there was no need for the Commander to step in.

"Aye Sir." Rhodes replied, turned, and exited the Ready Room. Walking across the bridge he said softly as he approached the Tactical Station, "Hmm, that went well."

Christoph glanced over to Rhodes, "I knew it would Sir. You are a born leader." Looking back at the console and speaking softly, "We're all behind ya, Lieutenant. Whatever may come."
