ON:

Janel Stace, his cane in hand, heaved himself up out of his chair on the bridge to walk closer to the viewscreen. His eyes now betrayed his wizened age as they squinted and focused on the display but without much success. No amount of medical advancement could stay the ticking hands of time and in the final push of his life, his aching, aging body was all but ready to give up the ghost and, like a butterfly, transform with the selection of a new host.

But here he was. And no amount of brass could keep him from his auspicious occasion. As the first gaggle of Klingon ships decloaked on the screen he could just about make out the green hue that formed their solid edges. A flutter of a proud smile broke like a wave across the sandy beach of his face as he felt the presence of someone behind him.

"Feels good, doesn't it?" Admiral Butterton said as he placed a friendly and first hand of the Trill's shoulder. "So much work has gone in to this day and I'm proud to stand by your side and enjoy it with you."

Ever stoically, Stace simply nodded, placing a trembling hand on the admiral's as he patted it. "Let's hope it's the first of many between our races."

"Admiral," a voice called out from the Ops terminal, "the Klingons are hailing us."

Butterton patted Stace again on the shoulder before he took his place back in his chair. "Captain?" he smiled to the Trill. "Would you like to do the honours?"

He waited a beat and without looking back to the admiral cleared his throat, looking back to the viewscreen.

"Put it through, Lieutenant."

OFF:
