250 words; about a 1 minute read

Her long, grey gown swept along the floor as she walked from her quarters in the Trill Symbiosis Commission to the operating room. Everything seemed dim and vacant. The young Trill's hands trembled at her side as she made the walk. It was ritual, she was told. To make her way alone from her room to be Joined. Some Trills did it, and some Trills preferred not to. But her sponsor had insisted and the Stace Symbiont was a prize. She thought that all Joinings could be deemed as prizes but Jariaas Pell was exceptionally delighted when he had heard that Norvi Perim was to receive Stace. In fact, she was a little enamoured by his enthusiasm and scared all at the same time.

She entered that room a young, shy girl with hope in her heart for a better future. And as she was greeted by a handful of Trills, mostly unJoined, she nervously smiled at the pleasantries. The last person to embrace her was Jariaas. "You've come so far, my little Norvi," he whispered to her as she accepted his affection. "And great things will be bestowed upon you after today. You will come to know me much more than your sponsor. But as a friend. And old friend." He clasped both hands about her small shoulders and took one final look at her. "You will bring so much vitality to the Stace line. And I for one can't wait to see where you take its journey next."
