Commodore's Log, Stardate 67238.1

Recent developments in our mine investigation have taken an unexpected and troublesome turn. Two of our teams -- one led by Commander Blake and the other by Lieutenant Stace -- have both encountered strange occurrences while they were attempting to survey the underground tunnels. The official reports from both teams make mention of transient voices...possibly subconscious; equipment malfunctions; a dead Cardassin miner infused into the rock face itself; and...the disappearance of one of Galileo's security officers who was found dead on the opposite side of the mine from where he originally was.

*A long pause followed by frustrated sigh*

I am not sure what to make of this information. That is, if it is even accurate. Not that I do not have the utmost confidence in this ship's crew and it's senior officers, but as it currently stands, these reports have created more questions than they have answered. I cannot take this information to Starfleet without a clearer explanation of what exactly, if anything, is happening down on the planet. A string of seemingly unrelated incidents and deaths is far from a complete scientific investigation, but at the same time, there is apparently an unknown danger present in the uridium mine which has taken the lives of at least two people that we can confirm.

I must speak with Captain Holliday. Though I hesitate to force him to send more survey teams into the mine without fully understanding the dangers down there, we must discover what is happening otherwise we will be unable to complete our mission and the inhabitants of Lyshan III will continue to suffer. And to make matters worse, recent tensions between the Cardassian cruiser and Galileo have escalated thanks to a botched attempt at diplomacy during a dinner ceremony. I fear we have no choice but to return to the planet's facilities and continue to investigate, or face the consequences from the Cardassians we pledged to help.

Computer, end log.
