Commodore's Log, Stardate 67235.8

The senior staff and I have just met Gul Verrok, a very interesting Cardassian man who really couldn't be anymore stereotypically Cardassian... that is, of course, to say that he personifies all of the undesirable traits of his kind. Deceptive, arrogant, militaristic. My people have a word for those like him: pres'nuech, which means "one who smiles with his mouth rather than his eyes". It is mostly used to describe a person with ill intentions, and a person who puts on a facade while hiding his true motives. I think this is the perfect description of the man. I have no idea what he could possibly be up to, but it does not seem that he has much interest in the well-being of Lyshan's miners. They appear to be second-class citizens to him despite them all being fellow Cardassians, which leads me to believe his presence in the system is the result of something else. What, exactly? I have no idea. A job for our intelligence team to investigate, perhaps.

Our initial briefing with Verrok did not go as smoothly as planned. Aside from his stonewalling techniques and lack of substantive answers to our questions, there was also tension and hostility present on our side of the table. Several of our older crew members seem to regard Cardassians with a great deal of disdain, and it began to boil to the surface during the meeting. Fortunately no major incidents have occurred yet, and Captain Holliday was wise to invite Verrok and his personnel over for a diplomatic dinner, of sorts. I do not want to be the one who oversees the degradation of Federation-Cardassian relations, and I can only hope that this dinner -- in a more formal and diplomatic setting -- will help smooth things over.

Computer, end log.
