One Day At a Time

"Computer begin personal log...

Well, it certainly has been an adjustment being here on the Galileo but I feel I have adapted rather well considering how cramped everything seems to feel. Though, I have to wonder if all officers and crew feel this way on their first assignments on a starship. I mean, even the largest ships in the fleet still have corridors and bulkheads that keep you confined. But, I suppose it is a way of life for a lot of people, they choose this life and now I have as well..."

Elijah leaned back in his chair and stared at his desk work station terminal. He was now in his quarters, he had showered and changed for the evening. He had plans to hit the sack early, he was tired and the shower had only relaxed him further. He yawned and stretched, his spine popping as he did so. It felt good.

"Work has been going fine, though being in a lab is nothing new for me. We are assigned projects, I work on my own stuff and the day is pretty much filled. Nothing has changed in that regard. Having that kind of stability and routine I am sure has helped me make the transition from planet to starship life. I need the routine in my life, it's a staple, a companion and I sometimes fear what would happen if that got shaken up somehow. In fact, I don't even want to think of that, so I just need to be put that thought out of my head right now..."

Leaning forward, Elijah folded his arms a top of the desk. He briefly wondered when his roommate would return, though it didn't matter either. They both respected each other's space. Though, he still found it odd to share with a woman. Even at the Academy, the suites were co-ed but your actual bunkmate was of the same gender. It was something to get used to, but he was a modest person anyway so he was used to changing in the bathroom. It was harder to get used to a cramped living space then a female roommate.

"I have also started to form friendships rather quickly, which is something of an oddity for me as well. Back when I was in the labs on Earth, it took me weeks and in some cases months before I even started talking to my colleagues in a social manner. I suppose, in a way, this is a good way for me to start over. It will always be hard for me to be in social situations, it will always be hard for me to talk about myself, it will always be hard for me to make connections with others but at least I can maybe be more forward and outgoing here... Maybe..."

Elijah shrugged.

"I guess I will just have to see what happens. That is all I can really do right now, take each day as it comes and go from there. My main focus is my job and with that focus means I want to do a good job. I am not sure if I have a lot to prove or anything, I mean my work and dedication shows that, but still I want to always put my best foot forward. I don't want to let anyone down... Ever. I just have to take one day at a time, just one day at a time, just one day at a time.

Computer end log."

The terminal beeped and the monitor of the work terminal went dark for half a moment and the Federation logo appeared in the standard blue and white. In the dimness of his quarters, the logo was bright and brilliant and he found himself squinting. Reaching for the terminal, Elijah tapped a couple of a buttons and the display went dark. He sat there staring at the dark screen for another few moments before lifting himself from the chair and moved to his bed.

Elijah sat, again yawned then bringing his legs up, he settled back against the pillow. "Computer lower lights by another 20 percent," he called out. The computer beeped its acknowledgement and the lights promptly dimmed. He turned over, pulling the blankets over him as he did so. He closed his eyes and allowed sleep to overtake him.
