ON:

Sipping the cool wine from a misty glass, Scarlet leant back in her chair, shaking her head to herself. She glanced back to the computer screen that was recording her log, giving an almost wry smile.

"Things have gone mad," she laughed softly, shaking her head slowly from side to side, her long, dark hair falling forward over her shoulders with the movement. She wore her dressing gown rather than her uniform. Lily was in bed and she could unwind for the day.

"One minute, I'm minding my own business, the next, I've been made the Chief Counsellor," Scarlet gave a near tut as she considered it. "I have to admit, I didn't see that one coming. I had sort of assumed that climbing the ladder was over since leaving the Marines and my old rank behind."

Scarlet sighed as she enjoyed the wine, closing her eyes for a long moment and tipping her head to the side to stretch her neck warmly. "If I'm honest with myself, I suppose I miss being a Captain. It was just the right rank in the Marines. You could take the lead down on the ground, but you didn't get as caught up in the red tape as the command staff. Although, I'm pretty sure there's more red tape to be had as a Chief in the regular Fleet."

Leaning forward, Scarlet refilled her glass, sighing as she rolled her shoulders. "Jeroen and Lily are getting on amazingly well. I couldn't ask for anything better. Jeroen got me through my time living in the Maquis. Knowing he's there for Lily now, it's a huge relief."

She shook her head with a frown, rubbing the back of her neck as she tensed, thinking over what Jeroen had told her. "Jeroen is being hassled for his time in the Maquis," she said quietly, her breath tight. "By a Department Head, no less. Just when you think you can forget about something, it suddenly turns up again. The Maquis might have been destroyed, but it's still managing to follow us around."

Scarlet ran her hand over her face, sighing as she sat back, drinking deeply from the wine glass. "We'll see what happens. But one way or another, I'll be looking out for him. He protected me back in the Maquis, even if he denies it. I'll return the favour if it's ever necessary. He became family. He's my family. And I look out for my family."

Scarlet gently rubbed her forehead with the tip of her thumb as she let out a long, relaxing breath. "Computer, end log," she said softly before getting up, moving to the viewport to look out. She pressed a hand on the surface, to lean against it, the other hand on her hip. Distance was a strange things. Years ago could seem like yesterday, and lightyears could feel like just a few steps away.
