Lower Lower Decks

276 words; about a 1 minute read

“Okay, now listen up…” Lily Blake’s nose scrunched up as she attempted a strict face, the sort of face she had seen too much of in the last few days. In front of her was her teddy bear, unicorn and dragon. She had put them on cushions to make sure they’d be comfortable.

“We’re lost in space!” she held her hands out to the side in a wild gesture. “And there’s loads of new people from the other ship here. And everyone’s trying to get us home, I think, or we’re trying to get them home. Who knows. But because of that, everyone’s busy. Mummy’s busy, Verity’s busy, Aria’s busy…” she trailed off for a moment and reached to play with a lock of dark brown hair that had fallen from her braid to hang down the side of her face.

“So we all need to help out! Because the grown ups are too busy with running around looking cross…” she put her hands on her hips in an imitation of a grown up. And then giggled when her toys didn’t react. She glanced over to the door, knowing that behind it, Verity was sitting and working. What he was doing, she didn’t know, but she had said she was going to play in her room anyway.

“And we help out by being quiet when we need to be, by not painting lipstick on Verity and by tidying up our room so Mummy doesn’t have to,” she finished, with a quick nod. She reached out, gathering her toys to hug.

“Make it so.”
