The war was not going well. It hadn't been for a long while, either. It had been years since she was even a Starfleet officer. She still worked with Federation Sciences, which gave her plenty of time to spend with Luke and the children, but she knew that was likely to end soon. Too many ships were gone, too many officers lost.

And then one morning it came. The message she dreaded most. The official Starfleet emblem was a clear indicator of the contents. But when she saw that it was addressed to both Luke and herself, she wasn't sure if she was worried or relieved. Both, if she was being honest.

She stared at it for several minutes, until she heard the soft ping indicating that Luke was reading it from his office. She to a deep breath as she entered her decryption code and read the message. Reactivated. It was what she'd been expecting. Luke, too. She was sure he'd be called up first, with his experience. But no, it was both of them together. And…they were going to the same ship. She was so relieved not to be separated from him that she sat down to finish the message.

That had been her biggest worry. The kids were her life, but Luke was her soul. Both children knew of the war, and as it progressed, they knew their parents would have to fight. They also knew why, and that made it easier. But Marisa wasn't sure she'd be able to stay behind when Luke left. Knowing they would be together gave her hope.

Her thoughts went to the many things they'd have to do before leaving. The most important was to send the kids somewhere safe. She and Luke had already made plans for that. She had family who would take them until the war was over. If the war ended, that is. And if she and Luke survived. But if they didn't, at least they'd be together. She had to admit that this was better than she hoped for.

She turned her attention back to the message, saw where they were going and received her second surprise of the morning. The USS Galileo-B under command of Captain Lirha Saalm. Marisa closed her eyes. The odds were against them, but after all these years, she still believed that if there was any chance of getting through this war alive, it would be with her.

She thumbed her acknowledgement of the orders, then pulled up the list of things they had to do in the next 48 hours. At least they'd been given that long before leaving. She checked it over. Yes, there would be time.

She walked out of the door and into Luke's arms. They held each other, communicating what words could not. Then, together, they went to tell their kids.
