Taking Stock

469 words; about a 2 minute read

ON:

"It's been a funny sort of week..."

Scarlet watched the screen that was recording her log with a small, wry smile at the understatement of the words. Lily was in her lap, sleeping. She rocked her gently and stroked her hair softly as she slept.

"This little one, she's whole and well. I can't believe how accepting she has been with it all," she spoke softly to the screen, shaking her head gently. "She's stuck in no gravity and she thinks she's a flying dragon. The ship crashes and she plays superhero. I think I owe the Chaplain a good thank you present for playing along with the games to keep her calm."

Scarlet looked down at the sleeping girl with a frown, swallowing. "It wasn't easy though," she said quietly. "I'd be lying if I said it was. I knew I had to help out in Sickbay. I know I had a job to do. You just can't help but have a feeling of something pulling in you though. A pull to where she is and how she is. Wanting to give her a hug, tell her it will pass soon."

Scarlet shook her head, holding her breath, just falling silent for several long moments, not caring if she was being recorded not saying anything.

She finally chuckled softly, shaking her head. "At least she didn't see her Mother knocked out like an idiot," Scarlet closed her eyes with a slight blush. "I can't get over that, how embarrassing! I was there to help the wounded and became a part of the rising tide of problems down there. I won't be able to show my face in Sickbay for a while."

Scarlet sighed, carefully reaching for her tea, taking a delicate sip. "Hopefully, things will be a little more peaceful from now on. I still can't believe how lucky we were. Going through all we did, this ship, I would have expected it to rip apart under that kind of stress. Somehow, we got through it. This little science ship," she smiled, glancing back to the screen. "This little crew."

"Battles...Klingons. Klingons," Scarlet frowned and gave a slight snort of derision at that. Remembering the fight she'd had with them down in Engineering. Still, it had given her muscles a stretch if nothing else. She'd oddly missed the fighting from her Marine days. She was sure it meant she was nuts.

"Either way," Scarlet sighed as she slid her cup back onto the table, holding Lily close. "I have to admit, I can't wait to get outside on shoreleave, in some real sun, with some real air, and just mess around like a teenager for a couple of days. No responsibility, no work, no Klingons and no Sickbay."
