Personal Log 001

592 words; about a 3 minute read

My transfer to the USS Galileo was delayed substantially by last minute repairs necessary on the Tekne Star, so it turned out I didn't arrive until the day before launch. Fortunately, that was time enough to report in to the Captain and my superior officer, the Chief of Engineering.

I am perplexed by the relative speed this launch is occurring in, especially with such a new ship. There have been very basic issues with transporter systems, EPS relays, and auxiliary ships that ought to have been caught by the deck crews during the build. It seems as though the higher-ups just want to get the Galileo off the ground; I can't begin to speculate why.

In hindsight, I could have conducted myself better in both reports. I was still off balance from the hectic transfer when the Captain summoned me and I was nervous about what she might be expecting from me. Excuses... Why is it that I can handle disasters of epic proportions, face sparking warp coils with confidence and repair auxiliary engines in flight calmly, but the idea of simply talking to someone without knowing where that conversation will go is so terrifying? Mother is perfectly social, and Father, while taciturn, doesn't seem to be unnerved by others. What is it about me that is so... unbalanced in this regard? How do I overcome this challenge?

(clears throat)

The Captain was forgiving, if she noticed my unease. I assume she must have. One doesn't achieve command of a brand new Nova by being unaware of one's subordinates. Hopefully this won't affect her opinion of me too strongly - at least not enough to lessen her faith in my ability to do my job.

The Chief, as I suspected from having read his file, has this ship under control. We were already working on correcting the issues left over by the deck crews before we'd deployed. If we continue in this manner, catching problems before they arise - a unique concept in my experience of starship CEOs - we should be able to make the ride smooth and simple for the rest of the crew. It appears I am being given an opportunity to prove how much I am capable of, in so far as my work assignments go. Free reign on my objectives isn't something I'm used to, but I look forward to the prospect. As long as I don't break anything, I think he and I will be able to work together fine. If I do break something, I'll have to deal with me before him, so... I just won't. Plain and simple. Eye on the prize. Ah... what are some more meaningless motivational phrases?

My late arrival to the ship has not allowed me much time to meet the other members of the crew outside of Engineering. Although I did have a surprisingly welcome conversation with the ship's new biotechnologist, Ziyal. His species has many technological advancements and he's offered to let me stick my nose into one of his research subjects while on board. I am already looking forward to our next conversation. It would be nice to have a friend for once...

Delete that.

Oh, for crying out loud, why did they change the layout of the bloody log buttons? The last arrangement was fine!

(sighs)

Reminder for future command structure meetings: People before ships.

Personal reminder: You are not an android. Oh, and I should really study the ridiculously redesigned console layouts. Yeah. I'll do that now.

Peers out.
