Once there was a Mother of a House to see who was the wisest in the land to be her advisor. So she laid out a task and issued it to all the the people of the land.

She proclaimed, “You must each bring me a rope woven from ashes.”
All the people were very troubled, knowing the impossibility of the
request.

A young girl went home and told her mother of the mother's command
as they ate their evening meal. “A rope of ash is what she wants. How can I do this?”

"It is not possible," her mother said. The young girl tossed and turned all night and finally went out into the night. Along the way she passed by a collection of small houses where the elders lived. She brought them fruit and drink and sat with them and talked long into the night. Finally one of the oldsters asked, "Something troubles you child?"

The young girl told her the task and the group nodded and finally one said, “You must weave a rope very tightly then burn it and bring it carefully to the Mother.”

The young girl was amazed and overjoyed at the old people's advice and
quickly went about her task. The next day, she was the only one who brought an ashen rope to the Mother. The Mother was pleased and praised the young girl for his quick thinking.

Still the Mother of the House thought perhaps the task to easy and decided on a new even more difficult task.

“Each of you must bring a conch shell with a thread passed through it.”

Once again, the young girl went home and then out into the night. Again she went to the place the old ones where kept bringing fruit and talking to them and then she asked: "I have even more impossible task. How might I accomplish this?"

The group thought about it and then again one of the old ones said: “Take a conch shell and point the tip to the light. Take a thread and stick a grain of rice on it. Then give the rice to an ant and make it crawl into the shell. The ant will make its way toward the light and weave the thread through the chambers of the shell.”

Once more, the young girl was the only one who was able to complete
the task and again, the Mother was pleased. “How were you able to come up with away to solve the riddles of these tasks and complete them so well?”

The young girl simply said, "I listened to those who had vastly more experience than I."

She then told them about going to the old ones place and how they had solved the puzzles one by one.

The Mother nodded and said, "Then you have learned as I have learned and listened to those have more years of experience. That is truly wisdom."

The Mother then told the house to gather all sorts of delicacies and she took the young girl with her by her side and they went to where the old ones lived and honoured them."
