I'm Not Your Mother

346 words; about a 2 minute read

Amaranai sat in her quarters with Charlotte. They were eating dinner. Well, Amaranai was eating dinner and Charlotte was moping. Charlotte hadn't said much since they had boarded the Schofield and Amaranai didn't press. The older sister wanted to spend time with her sister, but duty called and the need to be Assistant Chief of Security and Tactical, even on a science vessel was demanding.

Of course, weren't a lot of Starfleet vessels so-called, "science vessels"? And those had a full compliment of weapons and personnel to repel boarders and the most basic of enemies. The larger enemies were steered clear of by proclamation of Starfleet, letting the larger warships handle their adversaries. Would it have benefitted both of them if Amaranai had asked for a posting on a Starbase instead of wandering the galaxy looking for whatever the Schofield was looking for?

But back to Charlotte. Charlotte was young and though she had been taught by Commander Nara on Earth and raised properly with Starfleet education, she was naïve and unsure of herself. Amaranai knew that the girl was still in some way sad that their mother had died and the older Franklin girl was having difficulty helping her sister get out of her funk.

Amaranai opened her mouth to speak but when Charlotte looked at her, she closed it over her food. The two sat, eating dinner in silence. Well, Amaranai ate her dinner and Charlotte just sat, silent. Amaranai stood and removed her plate from the table. She returned to the table and looked at her sister.

"I'm not going to force you to talk," she said to her sister. "But know that I am willing to talk and want to talk to you. You don't have to shut me out."

Without a word, Charlotte stood from the table and went to the room and closed the door. Amaranai suddenly wished she were on the Galileo and could escape to Lirha's quarters instead of dealing with a moody teenager. It also made her reconsider if she ever wanted children of her own.
