Rejected?!

Posted on 04 Dec 2017 @ 3:19am by Cadet Sophomore Grade Bethany Armstrong

443 words; about a 2 minute read

Jennifer opened up the terminal in her quarters to read her newest communiques. Part of her was excited as she hoped to find news of a new assignment.

"Rejected."

"Rejected."

"Rejected."

Her eyes began to water up. She wanted to cry as once again her hopes were crushed. She sat in front of the screen blankly staring into the screen at the words and her own reflection. She looked pathetic, redness already spreading from her eyes. Her lip trembled as she moped in her chair, defeated once again.

The defeat would not last long as her insides began to seeth with fire. Her trembling lips pressed together firmly. Her breathing became more rapid, her first clenching tightly.

Rejected, Rejected, Rejected. The words played in her mind like a tormenting melody, she could hear all the laughs of her tormentors, once again amused by her failure.

Sweat began to form on her forehead. Her breathing near hyperventilation. The tempo of the melody increasing. Rejected, Rejected, Rejected..

Enough was enough.

"Computer, begin log."

"To the Captain of the USS Galileo-A. I get it sir. Once you saw my application you probably did some research and learned a few things about me. I bet in your research you found out about my Kobayashi Maru exam. I bet in your reading you saw things like 'reckless', 'disregard for human life' and maybe even unsuitable for command. It's funny you know, because these same people push me to try things like that, and then when I do it they turn sour and do everything they can to knock me down. Well let me tell you sir, did I take that shot at the Maru? You're damn right I did! I took that shot because that ship would have started a war! That ship put millions, if not billions of lives at risk. There were six humanoid life signs on that ship, I had over four hundred! Four hundred people that some poor guy would have to go door to door and explain to parents, wives, husbands, children why Captain Armstrong got them killed over a damned freighter.

(Jennifer begins to sob)

My crew is everything to me, I don't care if they hate me, if they think I'm stupid or a bitch. A Captain places his or her crew above all....

So you can go find some other cadet who probably is more concerned about marks and self-image. Or maybe, you could take a chance on a girl who will literally give you her heart and soul just for a chance to see the stars.

I just want a chance....
