Application Rejected? Let's Try This Again

641 words; about a 3 minute read

There was an annoying beep on her console.

The sort of beep that told her, by its tone, that it wasn’t the best of news. For a moment she considered ignoring it. But it got louder and louder until she groaned and forced herself up. She walked over and hit the button, seeing the message. USS Galileo. Application rejected. She let out a soft breath, frowning as she considered it. “Now that’s not good…” she sat down and rolled her shoulders, moving her hand to slowly rub her neck.

She had been hopeful. But she suspected she was new. And yet, it seemed silly just to accept something as unfortunate and move on. After all, she had trained hard. Sitting around on Earth was so and so. And while some other posting would be just as good, this was the one she wanted. She wanted something longer so she had more time to just get used to things, to people. So she could be part of the community.

She knew there was no right or wrong. She might just not have the skills they required. And even so…

Could you just reapply?

She wasn’t sure, she hadn’t done it before. But she brought up her application regardless, watching it. No comments. So she didn’t know why it had been rejected. For a moment she watched the screen before shrugging. “Okay. Let’s see…” she got up a screen, deciding to do a recording. She was still in her uniform after all, she looked respectable. Not like she had hair to mess up.

“Computer, start recording,” she said and settled in her seat, watching the screen.

Recordimg.

“I’m Crewman Raine Ni-ya. My application appears to be rejected. I do not know the reason for this, so I am reapplying with this additional recording so I can tell you about myself. I am Cereijan. If you know where I came from, I am both surprised and pleased. My people do not have many skills, but there is one we have proven to excel at. Science. I have been studying it since I was 12, practicing it since I was 20. My area of expertise was genetic manipulation. While banned from the Federation and rightly so, to be able to practice it you need an acute understanding of genetics full stop. I am able to distinguish DNA patterns by eye and can now identify the similarities between all the major Federation species. While studying here on Earth I showed great promise in all areas of science I came across. But more importantly, I learn fast. You need me to do something, I will find a way. I come from a culture where we put the community first. As such, I will always put the best interest of the ship and my Captain first. I might be blunt. I might not understand the social nicesties or see the need for them. But I am looking for a commitment. A ship tp be a part of, a crew to work with…to be my family. I think that I would be a good fit. Which is why I am sending my application again in the hopes you will see that I am just the person you need on your ship.” She gave a small nod. “Computer, end recording, attach it to the application and send.”

Confirmed. Application sent.

Raine stood and stretched, humming to herself with a small smile. “Try rejecting that. I got time. I’ll apply as many times as it takes,” she said into thin air.

Application received.

“Computer, put on music. Random playlist, 21st Century,” she called out and smiled as the room was filled with music, making her move with it.

Despite the annoying start to her day, she felt good.
