"Personal Log, stardate..." Edward paused for a few moments, scratching his head. "Honestly, who can remember the stardate? I know it's been standard procedure for Starfleet for centuries, but for a civilian it's a pain trying to remember them. Anyway, I'm aboard the USS Hathaway. It's a Constellation class. It's one of the older ships around, but some of the systems are designed in a way that I think Starfleet is suffering by overlooking."

He leaned back, biting his lower lip as he thought. "Cadets will be arriving shortly to crew Hathaway for a short cruise around the nearby systems. As I've been looking over the records of the cadets chosen for this exercise, I'm confident in their ability. I'm less confident about the personalities involved. One cadet, in particular, is concerning. Grevash is a Tellarite. They're known for being blunt and sometimes even tactless. Even with that background, Grevash has been noted as having narcissistic leanings. Maybe this will be good for him."

"Of course, as much as this is meant to be a learning experience for the cadets, it's just as much a learning experience for me. Sure, I've been through OCS and I've led teams of engineers before. But my teams were always more focused around a single technology. It's going to be a learning experience for me too. Hopefully I'm as good a leader as I want to imagine myself being."

"Not that my self-perception has much hope of being accurate. Everyone wants to believe that they're good at what they do. I know I'm good at some things, but even then." The lanky human pushed one of the hairs at the corner of his mouth to the side as he thought. "Honestly, I know that most people don't have the grasp of general engineering like I do. And there's a reason I'm one of the leading holo-engineers. Even then, it feels like anyone could do what I do. All they really have to do is apply themselves. People tell me that's not true, and I know that at some level, that's true. It's just hard for me to feel that it's true."

"I'm rambling. I know. But these are required, so I've got to say something. To sum up, I guess, I'm aboard the USS Hathaway and preparing for my first stint in leadership in Starfleet. I'm nervous, but that's only to be expected. I think."

"Computer End log."
