Read All About It

541 words; about a 3 minute read

Timeline: MD 29 - 1800 hrs
Location: Starfleet Academy, San Fransisco, Earth - OCS Quarters, 12A

[ON]

"It's strange, you know," Edward said into the console, "I've worked on project Supernova for nearly four years, and I've spent my entire career working government projects before that. Lyle thinks it's a waste of my potential. He said I could have worked in the private sector, still made a difference, and not have been isolated on backwater research stations."

The lanky man sighed and leaned back in his chair. "He's probably right. He was even more surprised that I decided to join Starfleet. 'It's a little late in the game to change careers, isn't it Ed?'" Edward's imitation of his brother's voice was exceptional. Then again, it ought to be after forty years of perfecting it. Edward was the older brother by five years and one of his favorite childhood hobbies had been mimicking everything his brother did. Sometimes is was good natured and sometimes not. That was, after all, how brothers were. "He might be right. People are living for longer than ever now. I met a man who lived to be one-forty-something. He wasn't in great shape, but the fact is he was a full century older than me when he died. If I have even close to a hundred years left in me, this isn't such a shock."

Edward picked a piece of fuzz from the cuff of his jacket and deposited it on the desk, ready to be swept into the disposal bin later. "Mom always hoped one of us boys would join Starfleet. When we both took after dad, it was a bit disappointing for her. She was happy that I decided to follow in her footsteps after all. It simply seemed like the right thing to do."

"I got a bit off topic there. I just read that the crew of USS Galileo has been cleared of wrongdoing, with one notable exception. Of course, from what I've overheard, Admiral Saalm being cleared is pretty well a foregone conclusion. The old saying says you shouldn't count your eggs and so on, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's cleared completely. The news also said that the crew had been demobilized as of yesterday evening. Some of the crew will probably find new assignments before the final phase of testing for Supernova is complete."

Edward caught the closed door out of the corner of his eye. "I'm likely not supposed to know that Supernova is earmarked to replace the destroyed Galileo, and maybe I heard wrong. I doubt it, though. Scuttlebut has a tendency of being right a bit too often. If they're the people I'm supposed to be serving with once I'm out of OCS, I want to meet them. With the demobilization I assume a lot of them will head off-world, which limits my access, but if I can contrive some reason to talk with a few of the people I'm likely to serve with, I'd be happy."

"Anyway," he sighed, "I know that Starfleet thinks it's important to make personal logs, not just development logs or progress reports. So here's my personal log for today. Computer, end recording and save."
