Once there was a very beautiful girl called Alohiai. She was renowned far and wide for her grace and beauty. Before the great houses, people would gather at villages or on the shore or the slopes of the mountains for dances and feasts.

One day Alohiai went to such a feast held the on the slope of one of the mountains overlooking the ocean. The festives were nice and she danced and sang and all the people listened. For her dancing and voice were as beautiful as was her face.

A young man named Laiani who was handsome attended the same festivity and when the two met in dance they immediately fell in love. It was not long before again the two met and were wed.

At their wedding one of the gods came down and joined in the party. When he met with Alohiai he immediately fell in love with her but she told him that she was married.

The god became enraged and fire came down the mountain and burned all the forest and threatened all the people. Alohiai and Laiani hurried everyone to safety at their own peril and as Laiani helped Alohiai to escape the fire, he slipped and fell into the molten rock and fire and perished.

The god appeared and said, "You are now widowed and can be mine!"

Alohiai rejected him again and appealed to the heavens that she wished to be with her departed husband and threw herself from the cliff but the rock had cooled. As she fell the gods heard her plea and were angered at their fellow one that had caused this. They transformed Alohiai into a beautiful flower.

To this day if one finds a field of cooled rock with the Alohiai flower growing on it, if one whispers a prayer of love and blessing the weather will be clear and sunny but if one picks the flowers it will turn dark and stormy as Alohiai's tears weep for being parted from her love.
