Checking in with Myself

Posted on 28 Apr 2017 @ 5:06pm by Lieutenant JG Grayson Jones

562 words; about a 3 minute read

Grayson paced around the temporary quarters he had on Earth before heading into the bedroom that overlooked the bay in San Francisco and right across the water to Starfleet Headquarters. The sun was low, making the water glow a golden sheen as Grayson picked up a PADD and allowed himself to collapse on the bed. The past few weeks for him had been as stress-free and relaxed as he hoped they would have been. Catching up with friends, old flames and all the people in his life he had called family had helped him recover from one of the most tension-filled periods of his life. Mostly though, he felt clear-headed and free, something he hadn't experienced for some time.

He lay on his back, placed the PADD on his chest, stared out the window and began recording.

"I promised not to do or any anything cheesy, but I doubt that will happen. Thought it best to check in, you know, for posterity." He laughed a little. "Mostly so I can process my thoughts. Counsellor over at medical suggested it. Oh yeah. I've been given a clean bill of health after the whole joining of minds thing with the supposed ex. Apparently, this would have been something easily avoided if he had trained like Betazoids should. Next time I date a Betazoid, I ask about their mental training, or if they are just, you know, mental. I seem to attract that sort."

Grayson allowed his words to drift off as he felt the cool breeze drift in from the open window. "Anyway, less of that. Time to put that bit of my life behind me and never speak of it again really. Being back on Earth has been a nice change of pace. My own room, room to breathe, to walk around it. It has been great catching up with old friends, some old flames as well.

I met up with Gordon last night, the cute Australian guy from my second year at the Academy. It was nice to catch up; I think we might go for a few more drinks tonight. He said he would swing by my place when he finished at the Academy. He is teaching now. Normally he was the one sleeping at the back of class after we went out the night before.

Oh, and speaking of the Academy, I took a wander around there today. It was a good walk to recharge. A few professors were still around; it was great to see them. I've actually to see Callaghan tomorrow. I told him I was in town for a bit while Starfleet looks at where to reassign me. I'm hoping a station or something. But, he says he has some contacts who are looking for people at an ASDB project. Starship Design. That will be so exciting! It is something I have always dreamed of going and doing.

Closer to home, no warp cores to save every few weeks. Less constant replacing of hull plating. Planning and building the next generation of ships and continuing the current fleet designs and modernising them."

The door chimed in the distance, "That must be Gordon now then. Good timing, I was getting bored listening to myself. I'll catch up with this tomorrow, or the day after. It is good not to have a schedule to keep." Grayson ended the log.
