ON:

Evelyn sat across the table from Amril, her eyes trained on his. "I know I offered to update you on current events, however you and I have more pressing matters to attend to." She opened.

"Of course, Lieutenant," Amril replied, giving her a smile as he was used to, "I have had ample opportunity to study your people and history."

"The issue is your affiliation. You are a Vorta, a citizen of the Dominion and served with them during the War. Under traditional circumstances you'd be arrested and sent to a Federation prison, however recent events cannot go unnoticed, nor can the circumstances this crew discovered you." Evelyn's eyes never shifted away from his, her demeanor hasn't changed either.

The vorta's own demeanor did not flicker, his smile never wavered. "You understand the situation well," he said.

Evelyn looked at him, her eyes shifting a bit, "You helped saved this crew, you have an eagerness to learn more about humanity and their culture. And I am getting a distinct feeling you're even more different than your traditional Vorta." She said.

"Why do you say that?"

"Because of your recent actions, Starfleet is giving you a choice. We can return you to the Dominion, or you are free to remain here." She said.

"So," Amril said slowly, "I am being given complete freedom? I have to admit, I have no desire to be with the Federation or the Dominion. I defected to explore the galaxy on my own. Just me and my shuttle."

His final sentence caused Evelyn to look away for a second. "Me and my shuttle" Evelyn repeated shaking her head, "You remind me of me for a second there, Amril. I remember saying those words a very long time ago."

"Really?" he asked, looking interested, "Did you travel on your own for a time as well? I take it not while in stasis..."

"Earth was a long way from my homeworld, so I have my own shuttle during my early years in Starfleet. Also when I married, for my honeymoon, we visited some of the lesser known Federation member worlds. I haven't traveled like that for..." Her voice faded as she counted the years. "I would say over a hundred years... been a while." she chuckled to herself.

"Ah, you are not human," he pointed out.

Evelyn arched her brow, "Did you suspect I was?"

"You appear human, at least. But I know the Federation has members who look human but are not. Still, in light of any other evidence, I assume humanity for those who look human."

Evelyn nodded, "Fair enough. No I am not human, I am an El-Aurian."

Amril smiled at Evelyn again. "Ah, El-Aurian. I do not beleive I am familiar with your race."

Evelyn nodded, "Not surprising. Other than being known as a race of listeners, the Federation doesn't know much about my people either."

"Well," Amril declared, giving Evelyn something of a sly look, "I suppose I had better stop asking questions about you and let you do your job, hm?"

"Amril, I'm going to be completely honest with you." She said sternly, eyes focused on his. "I like you." she added, and a small grin formed.

"I'm quite pleased to hear that, Lieutenant."

"You've been gracious and kind to members of this crew, even to those who may still harbor resentment towards the Dominion. You helped this crew and saved our lives. I think you may be an asset to this crew in the long run." Evelyn replied.

"The long run?" the vorta asked, tilting his head curiously.

Evelyn smirked, "Human expression, forgive me. How would you like to be a member of this crew?" She asks.

The alien chuckled softly. "I've never received an offer like that. But what about me and my shuttle exploring the galaxy away from the conflicts of the Alpha Quadrant? Even among yourselves there is much fighting; Klingons, Federation, Romulans, Breen, Cardassian, Ferengi... so much conflict. I had planned to find a quiet corner of the galaxy."

She looked at him and frowned, "I'm speaking from experience, there is no quiet corner. I thought my homeworld was in a quiet sector of the galaxy and then it was destroyed, scattering my people all over the galaxy." She said sighing, "Amril, your case is unique. There are Admirals higher up that would want nothing more than to see you behind a forcefield. Others want to drop you off through the wormhole back to the Dominion. Those advocating your freedom is very few."

"Well, I must have caused quite a stir. I doubt the admiralty will really allow me to leave. Not yet. Isn't that right, Lieutenant?"

"Well you do have an ally. Me." Evelyn said honestly, "I don't believe you're deceiving us, and my species is very perceptive. However as a member of of Starfleet Intelligence, I have to inform you will not be permitted to use your shuttle in Federation space." She leaned forward, "The scars of the Dominion War still are fresh to many people, and I can tell for certain, letting you go in your shuttle and be on your merry way will not sit well with a lot of people." Regret was clearly expressed in her eyes as she continued, "I believe you'd be safer remaining here."

"Ah, safer," the said with a nod, his violet eyes holding her gaze with a knowing look. By safer, he knew very well what she meant. "It would seem, then, that you have a new crewman. What assignment am I going to have?"

"Considering how efficient you were helping us, I'd recommend you be placed in the Operations Department." She smiled, "The Captain will decide what your final position will be."

"Ah, I would be well-suited to such a job. I have extensive experience in Dominion logistics. No doubt I could help you run your ship with greater efficiency."

Evelyn grinned, "That was exactly what I had in mind." she stood up from behind her desk. "I think we're done here. You are dismissed."

Amril stood up. "Thank you, Lieutenant," he told her. He dipped his head and made his way out of the office.
