Location: USS Galileo - Deck 3, Security Office
Timeline: MD -2 1630

[ON]

The new chief of Security had asked for a meeting, and Miraj was not going to leave the conn for anything less than an abandon ship during her official hours, so she had agreed to meet him just after the end of alpha shift, and when she had handed over the helm, she paused only long enough to visit the head and grab a raktajino before dashing off to the brig. She arrived a little breathless, pink bunches swinging. "Liutenant Rayze, sir?"

"I think I'm going to hang a sign from the door," came the response from the well-built blonde man from where he sat behind the main desk in the small security office. The hum of one of the brig force fields provided a faint background to the room, though the occupant, Nelis Laldari, was asleep on the bunk. Rayze turned in his chair to face the pilot, and offered her a rueful, crooked grin as he continued, "It'll say something like, 'You are hereby ordered to not address me as lieutenant or sir'. Do you think Lirha will mind too much?"

He got up and made a couple of quick strides across the room, his hand leading the way as he offered to shake, and his smile growing to one more welcoming than sardonic, "It's nice to meet you, Miraj Derani. I'm Rayze. I appreciate you taking the time to come down here."

"Its nothing." She wasn't sure what to answer about his desire to not use rank and title. She'd just got used to using them, so it was strange to find someone doing away with them. She chose the safe couse and focused on why she had come, "I was curious, you said you had a plan? I just wanted to know what that was."

"Straight to business, eh?" Rayze shrugged. "I can work with that I guess. Here, take my seat if you like..." He started to pace in front of the desk after offering her his chair, hands clasped behind his back, a habit he'd forced himself to pick up so he didn't gesture wildly like was his normal way. "I was hoping we might work out a schedule for some cross-department training, Miraj. You and your team of hot shot pilots have a lot of skills you could share, the kind of skills that could do my team some good."

"Having Security personnel that can serve as a backup when it comes to handling a shuttle, whether it's because a regular pilot isn't assigned to a mission or because one of us has to take over, makes sense. I don't intend to try to replace you or any of your people; you're the experts at what you do, even though a couple of us have some skill in that area already." Rayze didn't bring up his own record, years spent as a pilot before changing departments, or Eelim's flight training either. He really meant that his team, himself included, could learn from Miraj and her department. "And, to be honest, I'd like to see my people learn something more than just how to fight. Too often, I think, those of us in Security think of ourselves as soldiers and little else. There's so much more we can offer that doesn't involve violence."

"well, if you've got people who haven't got their basic license, we can do that. Cover runabouts and similar. If you can pilot a shuttlecraft you can pretty much pilot anything, its just a matter of scale."

Rayze grinned broadly at the pink-haired woman, a happy display of bright white teeth and wrinkled skin around his eyes, "That's just stellar! If we could get some, or even all of my staff qualified to handle the basic shuttles I'd be really glad." His grin turned a bit mischievous, and there was a light in his eyes like that of a kid about to do something he knew he shouldn't. "I don't want you to take it easy on them, either. From what I've read of their files this bunch might need a firm hand to get them to go where you want them to."

"Er." Miraj hesitated, Not sure what to say to that. She'd never really had to be 'firm' with anyone. "Im sure they'll be fine. Its just a driving lesson. Not the fighter pilot course."

With fond memories brought up by her mention of fighter pilot training, Rayze looked off into the distance for a moment. A lot had changed since those days, for him, for Starfleet, but he had learned not to regret the choice he'd made and to appreciate it for the good things it had meant. "Unfortunately, Galileo is a bit small for fighters," he said. "In any case," Rayze brought his attention back to Miraj, "maybe a few different simulated emergencies would be good, at least once they get the hang of the basics. I'll leave the details to you, Miraj, you're the expert."

"In the meantime, is there anything Security can do for you and yours? Like I mentioned, I want to guide this team away from the soldier mentality, integrate them more into the crew, so if there's anything we can help with like training drills or safety courses, please let me know."

Miraj shook her head, and the bunches bobbed around her face. "I'm not the best person to ask. You probably want to talk to commander Wyatt, " her stomach billowed butterflies at the thought of him, and she had to "Or the XO. I just fly."

"Hmm." Rayze wondered about that. Miraj was the leader of a department, and that involved a lot more than just piloting the ship. Given her rank and youth though, maybe she was being modest or unsure of just how far her responsibilities could go. "Well, in any case, thank you for agreeing to this training. As soon as I can get a schedule together I'll send it your way for approval."

"I look forward to it." she smiled at him and got up. "And once we know where our next port layover is, I schedule actual shuttle flights. No simulator."

"Sounds good, Miraj," Rayze brought the meeting around to a close, needing to get back to his intense review of the security logs of the previous chief, though he'd much rather chat with a new shipmate than listen to months-old reports from someone who was no longer on board. "I hope we'll see more of each other outside of our duties too, but for now there's a lot more I need to get to."

"Yes sir, Thank you sir." She remembered his preference for no rank or title, "I mean Rayze"
